Here is the latest edition of Windows Vista. This is the 32bit version, so before downloading make sure it’s compatible with your specs. This version includes all updates available until October 2008. Also it uses one of those so called OEM Bios hack methods, so just install it and enjoy.     why downgrade to xp? Vista is awesome.
    Sure your pc has to be pretty decent and not some old junk, but other then that, it works smooth and has never crashed on me (power user). No network or hardware/software issues. And haven’t even installed SP1 yet. I think i’ll try this release.

    Also install “TweakUAC” (http://www.tweak-uac.com/home/) to get rid of those annoyingly intrusive UAC popups. Put it in Quiet mode.

    Been using Vista for almost a year now, only had a problem with my control panel not opening when I first got it, now it’s great.

    It’s at least as stable as XP, people just need to stop bashing it, so that other people can start to use it and realise it’s not as crap as people make it out to be.

    Might as well wait for Windows 7, think of Vista as a beta for Windows 7. Microsoft did the same with Windows 2000 and XP.

    I agree I’ve had vista 2 months before it was even released to the public and it runs fine. It is more stable then XP I think. It actually looks online constantly for updates for software and hardware. Sure if your computer is garbage it wont run Vista so for those people XP is a better solution. But security wise vista is the best. In the almost 2 years I’ve been running it I HAVE NEVER had a single virus and for 1 year I didnt even run any A/V software. Now I use ESET NOD32 and I reccomend Vista to anybody that comes to me with computer trouble.

    I’m a MAC user myself, but i do also own a “windows” Laptop. and to be honest I seriously do not understand why people do not want to switch to Vista… always talking about XP is better than vista , this and that B.S,hell no, Vista is way better than XP, the User Interface is much more beautiful, u get Media Center, and so many other extras that XP just lacks.. I remember when Windows XP first came out, and all the people who had Windows 2000, mouned and groaned over the same things, oh XP is just a prettier interface, this and that. Now every where i read, its people complaining over the same issues. O.k look I understand the fact that when it first came outwas hard t, it o obtain drivers for most of the external peripherals, I.E printers and scanners, but if like myself u always visits the manufacturers site, to check for drivers updates, u’ll find that almost all the drivers have been updated to vista. another thing that I do not understand is simply who in there right state of mind will keep a PC for any longer than 3-4 years, it simply becomes outdated. Unless u have one PC and only use it for data entry then yes, but apart from that, every pc needs to be upgraded to keep up with our ever hunger for more memory and faster CPU. I bet u XP users still use CRT monitors huh? Refusing to upgrade to Vista is like having a pentium 4 running on DOS Operating System, its just pointless. come on guys, u need to make Bill gates rich, otherwise he wont offer free Internet explorers anymore. on that note, Ever since i moved on to a MAC from February this year, life has been smooth sailing for me.. yes MACINTOSH >>>>> PC…case closed

    I guess some people just like staying familier, I use XP Sp3 on my desktop with a 50″ LCD TV, so got yah there =P. I am one of those people that like to stay familier, but I do have Vista on my laptop, which I use more often anyway.

    Never used a MAC, really gotta try one.

    Actually there is nothing wrong with Vista. It runs perfectly, but it’s not easy to swicth over from WinXP to Vista due to different user interface.

    I personally use XP since I don’t have drivers for Vista. I could of course download them, but this is more complicated to find the correct drivers.

    @ #27…during a vista upgrade it will go online and install the drivers for your hardware 95% of the time it WILL find the drivers and you wont have to go looking for anything

    I’ve also been helping people upgrade their laptops from Vista to XP SP3 and it’s worth doing for free just to see the looks of relief and joy when released from the laggy bloated tyranny of the horrendous Vista

    any Vista users that say they are ‘happy’ are in total denial – I’m sorry, to require a hi-specced quadcore and 4 gigs ram just to do some word processing in Office and have translucent window bars and a clock widget does not a good computer make

    You are in denial over vista. Runs perfectly smooth with 2 gigs on my amd 3800 X2 – while I have photoshop, illustrator and dreamweaver open while listening to music in itunes.

    In fact, it multitasks better than XP ever did on the same rig.

    I have a Vista/XP dual boot system and Vista is taking over more and more. And no, I don’t have a high end machine – 2.6 GHz Celeron and 1 GB or ram and ZERO problems. Anyone who says it’s too bloated and slow has no clue what theya re talking about.

    i call shenanigans on your claim that it runs fine with just a gig of ram, mainly because the lack of ram was the sole reason my last laptop got pounded to death for it’s intolerable sluggishness.

    that said, 2 gig on my current one has given me a perfectly fine computing experience with vista, with no thought of ever going back.

    I bought my laptop over a year ago and it came with vista business, always had problems with it running slow, upgraded to 2gb ram and still having problems with it taking almost a minute to switch windows when i only have itunes, firefox and WoW open. Just bought a new hard drive and im installing xp pro on it :)

    I installed an earlier RLS of vista a couple weeks back. Having not really spent much time on vista until then. I find that minus some quirky changes in the UI from XP to Vista. I find that the current patched Vista is better than XP.

    The speed of Vista on my machine is perfectly fine. I find no discernible lag in speed from Vista. I have a mediocre machine, Dual Core Opteron 175, 2 Gig RAM.

    So I conclude that either many of the bugs that caused many of the issues people had with Vista to be fixed, or that all the hate was propaganda and disinformation from competition and pure Microsoft haters. I would bet it is a combination of the both.

    The main reason I hesitated using vista for so long was the drivers not being up to date. Now it would appear all the major manufacturers have updated their hardware drivers, as I had no issues with the base install recognizing all my hardware.

    my XP machine is running perfectly fine after 2 1/2 years without reinstall so i don’t see any reason to switch but on the other hand … if you get free vista with your new PC why not?

    just wondering: is there any difference (beside the updates) between this version and some other version you might find elsewhere from a few month back?

    This version is merely a a slipstreamed version of Vista Ultimate+all patches(includes SP1) as of mid-Oct.

    Basically it just combines all the patches into one install.

    nah, Vista does suck in general, whether you have an awesome machine or not. i have a quad core that i built with Vista Home Premium that i benched against an Athlon 64+ dual core running XP Pro SP2…the Athlon won in terms of stability & performance in software (hardware is a “duhh” considering the spec differences).

    Vista uses a helluva lot more resources (ESPECIALLY ram), & is useless unless it’s Ultimate or Aero in my opinion, especially for gaming. personally i’d say if you’re so in love with Vista, try any of the Ubuntu series, especially Beryl, in which Microsoft gently “lifted” the interface for Aero from.

    @58-fair enuff i c y u think that list of games etc is of stuf that works, but in fact it doesnt. many of those listed i have tried and to no avail. i am curently studying computer games development at university and it is the view of all the lecturers on my course that xp is the gamers OS. especialywith dx10 basically cracked for xp now-no need for a resource hogging os nemore-sure vista looks nice, but so does my xp with vista sounds, theme and icons etc, while stil runing alot faster and generally all around beta as a gamers machine.

    Well only beef I have with Vista is it doesn’t play nicely with some hardware. I have a Zyxel Wifi Finder with options to attach to a computer via USB and act as a access point or connect to other wifi devices. It wasn’t cheap and gave me fast response times. Well believe it or not, but when I plugged it into Vista, I actually got a Blue Screen. It does not like the Zyxel Wifi Finder apparently and I tried to find some drivers, but so far no luck. I am all for progression in technology, but if that software makes it hard for me to use my devices that I paid good money for and no to mention software, then why I upgrade? Which I can understand businesses because that becomes costly to have to replace everything each time. Firefox has the same issues, certain plugins don’t work with Firefox 3, and same goes with Acrobat or Photoshop. You upgrade your photoshop or acrobat and then you find yourself not being able to use your old plugins and the software writer hasn’t written an update yet, or they want you to fork out some more money for their new version. So only thing I can say, go try Vista out, can’t hurt to try. If everything works fine then stick with it. I would only recommend downgrading to XP is if you can’t get your certain apps to work or hardware. SP1 supposedly made things better and I believe SP2 is coming out shortly.

    I use kubuntu and xp dual boot since the first thing I did when I bought my new laptop is format and put OSes on their that don’t suck old hairy balls. Maybe one day I will have a quad core and 8 gig ram so it doesn’t take a half hour to boot up but until then I don’t want to have to upgrade just to idle at the desktop without virtual memory constantly running. Anything less than that kind of hardware is simply unbearable with vista and I didn’t know how much it truly sucked until I bought this laptop. Core 2 duo and 3 gig ram and still sucked so much I’d rather go without a pc than to use it with vista. Enjoy wasting a perfectly good piece of media on downloading this garbage. I will wait until they don’t suck which is not likely since windows will suck ass as will anything that is going to have vista codebase from now on. I will continue to format and put ubuntu and xp back on machines for people for free just to rid the world of another vista install.

    I’ve used Vista for a while now and i dont understand why everyone complains about it. It uses ram way more efficiently than Xp and actually multitasks better imo. Not to mention the interface is hardware accelerated. I would only suggest downgrading to XP if you have crappy hardware.

    Dimitry, it’s not worth the wasted media or the time. Vista sucks for gaming. 64 bit vista doesn’t play most games anyway. If you do try vista for gaming just assume the games will run only half as well as what they would in xp. It’s that damn bad.

    You guys really blow this whole deal out of proportion. I have a decent dualcore and 2Gb ram, and Vista runs just fine. I’ve usually got Photoshop, Illustrator, and Flash running constantly, with Firefox, uTorrent, and MPC on the side. I’ve experienced no noticeable slowdown as compared to when I used to use XP. It’s definitely not night and day as you claim.

    i am currently using vista ultimate(different then posted) and have little to no problems with it.

    uses more ram sure but you get direct x 10 which is great on gaming.

    unless you are running a single core system with less than a gig or ram you should be using vista.

    xp was made in like 2001 so that is like 7 years ago.

    ok, vista doesnt suck, i ran it on my old comp from the time it came out till september last year, the comp had 512 ram, 800mhz cpu(garbage now huh?) and with my new comp, i run absolutly smooth, it cost me $600(not bad for a prefab comp) and its about $400 today, its 2.6ghz, 2gigs ram. so seriously, those having problems must be running a personal word processor or something. with my old piece of ‘garbage’ i had the occasional bit of lag, nothing more. unless u like to run 20 different windows of firefox/internet explorer. 2 games of tabula rasa on high specs, 5 WoW’s, 30 runescapes, d/ling 5million things, theres seriously no problem. yes, its a bit bigger than XP, but its more user friendly. currently im running home basic, but thanx to Acer (best prefab company ive bought from), they made my vista basic, just like premium. but all in all, unless ur running a comp that runs the OS from a 5 1/2 inch floppy, u should be fine

    Yea, Vista is great. All the bashers are just spouting propaganda and have probably not even used Vista for more than 15 minutes.

    Here are reason I chose to upgrade: DirectX 10, More security. The only downside I have found so far is that UAC(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_Account_Control). But, you can easily turn it off.

    Those are basically the major differences you will notice if you are thinking of upgrading. If you don’t want/need any of those. I would suggest not bothering with Vista if you are satisfied with XP.

    So basically, since you are not paying for a license. There is no real reason to not choose Vista over XP.

    I dont care how old XP is, you still get better performance out of it. Not my words, google benchmarks between xp sp3 and vista sp1. XP is faster in file copying, applications like photoshop and gaming too.

    To be honest i didn’t saw a whole lot of difference between dx9 and dx10. And Vista uses more ram for some reason i don’t understand. And i hate searching for features that i knew blindly in xp.

    the big problem with vista is it takes way to much ram and videocard to run it, AND it doesnt run with half the software out there.. AND XP runs games lots better! ive put XP on laptops that Vista is on,(they try to make it hard by not making drivers) find drivers and XP FLYS with the RAM that Vista needs! Vista= Bloatware!

    I have Vista64 Ultimate with 8Gigs of RAM and an Intel E8400 and it flies! Everything starts instantaneously! :)

    BTW: UAC is for n00bs! And yes SP2 will come soon! My guess is 2009! Windows 7 in 2010 if all goes well! :)
    For gamers 64bit is a must!

    I have been using Vista for over a year with out issues, it is on my laptop and my main computer. Recently my Father needed a new laptop for work but being an Electrical Engineer he wanted XP because everyone had been saying that Vista is terrible and that it won’t run their specialized software. Well i bought his laptop and had everything running including all his specialized software on Vista. The Specialized Software includes Primavera, RSLogix 500, RSLogix 5000 and many more PLC and SCADA programs. So to anyone that uses specialized software check first before listening to the uneducated dribble of people who are too lazy/stupid to learn a new OS.

    just because something’s ‘newer’ doesn’t make it necessarily better – there are lots of software and hardware versions that get worse as they’re updated, and Vista is a classic case in point

    Few reasons why I think that Vista is crap:
    1. Uses WAYYY too much memory (just running idle, without any programs launched). Impossible to use on PCs with less than 1GB RAM. (some older PCs and those small laptops with Intel Atom CPU)
    2. MANY older programs and games refuse to run on Vista (and some newer ones too).
    3. UAC popups are annoying (fortunately, you can disable UAC).
    4. There are no signed drivers for some hardware for 64bit edition, unsigned drivers refuse to work on SP1, also some drivers for virtual devices refuse to work if they’re not signed.

    #105 is 100% right. Even if tomshardware tested Vista SP1 vs. XP, results would still be similar.

    I have Vista Ultimate x64 installed (just for games to work in DX10 mode) but I prefer XP64 (would use 32bit, but it can’t see my 6GB RAM) as my main OS.
    If you need a new OS, wait for Windows 7 or use some non-Windows OS.
    Well, if you’re already using Vista, continue using it if you like it. But for me, Vista will not replace XP even on a decent PC.

    Well the point is not if xp is old or not, the point is XP has lower requirements and therefor you are able to push that more resources from your machine..

    Working as a game graphical artist, our office all uses xp, its not that vista doesnt run fine on our highend machines, but it does take more of the top than xp, leaving lesser resources available..

    Hence stability issues vista does run fine now that it has had its battlescars from going gold, and been patched.

    Towards DX10, well dx10 has had its word spread to a point where it sounds like more than it is…

    I use vista for gaming, but for the “big” projects always xp and prob will for a long time.

    well I really enjoyed reading these comments. It only shows how many (os) uneducated people there are out there.I have vista on my laptop and on my desktop and they both run very well.I’m also a gamer and play call of duty 4 and other top of the line games without any problems. Also older games play fine and with no problems. I also use specific business programs. and also graphic programs like coreldraw photoshop.
    oh and I’m also an a+ certified tech with other credentials.There are power users, gamers, everyday minimal users that come and download programs and check them out to see if they will enhance their computing experience .Then also there are the rest uninformed, uneducated users and these are the ones that come to this site to bash and try to sound informed and knowledgeable.all I can say after using vista and dealing with hundreds of vista customers I find that the ones that changed to vista are quite happy with the performance of their computers. Those that have not changed are stuck in dreamland using outdated and useless equipment that only uses outdated and backward software. vista works well if used by users that want to further their experience and enhance their productivity. So in conclusion use what you have mastered and makes you happy(xp, linux mac–whatever)but dont bash other people who want to move forward and experience advancement.

    Vista works with no problems for a lot of people and has worked exceptionaly well for me.

     Do not set a password for your user-account during setup

    have fun! No Serial and no Activation needed!

    1) Do NOT enter pasword during setup (It can be added later after installation and activation).

    2) Do not enter a serial key.

    3) Ive always UNCHECKED the activation box during installation,

    4) TURN OFF Automatic updates and instead choose the option to inform you about them but not download or install them. This way you will always be informed of the new updates and you can choose whether to Install/Hide the individual updates.

    5) Avoid the update KB940510 this will DISABLE the bios crack and activation. This update is easy to spot as in the info for it it CLEARLY tells you that its to disable the activation bypass. All you do when/if you spot it is simply right click and choose the hide option and it will be hidden in future

    to UPGRADE from Vista to XP:

    1. Buy new harddrive.
    2. Unplug Vista harddrive.
    3. Plug in new harddrive and install XP.
    4. Replug your Vista, get personal files you need from it.
    5. Wipe Vista harddrive! This is important step! Is only way to get rid of Vista virus ;)

    6. Enjoy life with your UPGRADED-to-XP system :)

    Optional:
    7. Install Ubuntu on your clean Vista-wiped drive for additioanl fun and freedom.

    The only issue I have with Vista is the new Explorer.
    Have to download and use some other file manager.
    I haven’t found any I am as comfortable with as the old Explorer in XP.

    This doesn’t work! Does anyone actually wanna address this? If you install as per instructions, it asks for a product key, and if you don’t enter one it tells you it’s not activated and will expire in 30 days. If you hit the “Activate now” radio button, it tells you the product key is invalid.

    I had a recent scare with vista, bugging me to ‘activate’ as it found i was not found to be ‘genuine’.
    What i did was go into the disc directory for this release, into sources>$OEM$>$$>SETUP>SCRIPTS> then ran BIESTART.EXE in admin mode. a quick automatic script ran, but nothing seemed to happen, so i went on searching the net. after about 5-10 mins all my programs closed and vista restarted its self. after that, it had a window right before startup that said activation successful etc, and now i’m genuine again. so if u guys are having problems, try doing that.

    @#149 aka OK.

    i followed the instruction to install these vista..
    dont put the serial key, deselect "activate when online", and i didnt put any passwords..
    n the result is..
    i have 30 days to activate which means the BIE doesnt works!!

    ive done as well as u said..
    yes..my laptop does restarts..
    but it still ask me for product key!!

    i also had done the rearm..
    it makes me lost my 15 days of activation period!!
    now i only get 15 days left for these vista..
    it sucks..i dont want to keep on installing vista whenever the activation period is almost over..
    please any1..help me..help us…
