Microsoft Windows Virtual PC and Windows XP Mode for Windows 7 Build 7100 x86-WinBeta

Winbeta released 2 of the most anticipated apps for Windows 7. They are Windows Virtual PC(WVPC) and Windows XP Mode. If im not mistaken these apps only work on the RC of Windows 7. Which is released to the public on May 5th.

Note: I just tested this on Windows 7 build 7057 and it worked.

XP Mode consists of the Virtual PC-based virtual environment and a fully licensed copy of Windows XP with Service Pack 3 (SP3). It will be made available, for free, to users of Windows 7 Professional, Enterprise, and Ultimate editions via a download from the Microsoft web site. (That is, it will not be included in the box with Windows 7, but is considered an out-of-band update, like Windows Live Essentials.) XPM works much like today’s Virtual PC products, but with one important exception: As with the enterprise-based MED-V (Microsoft Enterprise Desktop Virtualization) product, XPM does not require you to run the virtual environment as a separate Windows desktop. Instead, as you install applications inside the virtual XP environment, they are published to the host (Windows 7) OS as well. (With shortcuts placed in the Start Menu.) That way, users can run Windows XP-based applications (like IE 6) alongside Windows 7 applications under a single desktop.

Both apps running

To run Virtual XP Mode, users must be running Windows 7 Professional, Enterprise or Ultimate with preferably 2GB of RAM with at least 256MB available to virtualization, and a processor that supports hardware virtualization. Many times hardware virtualization needs to be enabled in the BIOS to be functional.

This is more for business productivity than anything. I have no reason to run these, nor can I think of any reason for any single person (i.e. not company) to run these.

    Excellent upload though.

Performance is not that great, even on a Core 2 Duo with 4Gb RAM. It has potential and no doubt the final product will have better performance. I found that standalone Virtual PC 2007 SP1 gave better performance that the new Windows 7 Virutal PC. In fact, if you want to run VMs of Windows Server 2003 R2 or Windows XP without SP3 then you're better off using the standalone Virtual PC 2007 SP1 under Windows 7. Some thing I also found annoying…you can't share drives like before which is a pain because it means you have to use the USB support to access USB drives.

XP may take up less memory but Windows 7 still feels faster than it. Plus its more secure & it will enable your games to look better via DX10…

Was running this the other day on Windows 7 x64 RC. Screwed something up on my PC – my CPU was running at 100% even when I closed the program.

I often run VMWare with XP, Vista and Ubuntu all at the same time with no issues.

I think this will be good but it needs some work to get there.

    May 2nd, 2009 | 23:22

    @21,

You're not going to find an OS that uses less memory and space than XP. Times are moving forward's, not backwards. Try upgrading from your 256MB of RAM, to the average of 4GB's these days. Heck I have 8GB's, and my PC supports 16GB, so I should be good for a while. If you're running 8GB's of RAM, what's it matter if you're using 100MB to run your OS, like in XP, or the 1GB that Vista takes…it's not like you're ever going to use all 8GB's at one time. Back then most PC's had 256MB – 512MB of RAM, and XP was using around 100MB, and now-a-days most PC's come with 3GB-4GB of RAM, and Vista/Win7 use around 1GB-1.5GB, so it's still the same percentage being used, but when you make something better it needs more resources. I expect you think in the year 2020 you should be able to run an OS with 1GB of RAM as well right? It's not like there's any limitation so why limit the OS to 100MB's? Windows 7, and Windows Vista, for that matter, are both superior OS's to Windows XP, and Vista has been since day one for people who had a good enough system to run it on (and I'm doubting you're one of those people). So, get with the times, upgrade to at least 4GB's of RAM, a nice dual-core CPU if not quad, a better video card, or just a motherboard with good onboard graphics, and you'll be all set. 256MB of RAM, and single-core processors are a thing of the past so start thinking of the future.

    @21, (again)

And about the space issue. What size hard drive do you have? I mean, it's not like Vista/Win7 take 200GB's of room up or anything…heck, I have PC Games, and movies (1080p) that take up more room on my HDD than Vista or Windows 7. I would assume that you must be using a HDD that is 40GB's or smaller, which is ridiculous if you plan on downloading anything now-a-days. Even with XP that's ridiculous. Try buying either a bigger drive or just get an external drive to store your files on. I mean, there's no problem at all running Vista or Windows 7 on a 40GB HDD, they both work fine, but if you plan on downloading anything, even if you're using XP, at least go for a 200GB drive. I myself have three 500GB internal drives, and two external 1TB drives, that way I have room for all my stuff, and I don't think I could ever use a 40GB drive for more than two or three days without it filled up. Heck, some of the projects I have to store on HDD's for my work are more than 40GB's. I have a project I'm working on right now that is over 70GB's in size, and it's not even halfway done and it's almost twice the size of the HDD you're probably using. Seriously, get with the times and stop trying to buy old hardware to save money and expecting MS, or any other company, to release an OS that needs the lowest specs physically possible.

    May 2nd, 2009 | 23:53

    @ 28

yes, dipsh!t, I have tried both vista and 7 and they were both horrible. Why should I be forced to upgrade when everything runs fine in XP? I have pentium D, 2GB ram, and 7800. Should handle anything just fine but they both run very slow and become almost unusable when trying to do simple tasks, while XP handles it perfectly. Can play COD4 on high settings and get 30-40fps in XP, but only 10-15 in Vista and 7. Its a big corporate scam to force people into buying new hardware every 2 years when they should last you 7-8 years, but you guys are obviously to blind gullible and stup1d to see that.

    @20, 21 and other naysayers

XP has been around for 10 years almost. Do you really expect a commercially successful entity such as Microsoft to keep a tired operating well past its shelf life going for ever just because it's popular? You have to be realistic, nothing stays the same in life. Operating systems need to evolve to take advantage of new hardware developments and user requirements.

I've had Windows 7 running for several days now on my Dell M1330 with 4Gb RAM. It installed in 45 minutes, takes up less disk space than Vista (6gb now compared to 10gb for Vista). You can't expect it take up less disk space than XP, Windows 7 has more components. On boot up, which now takes sub 20 for me, I have more free memory than I did with Vista or XP. The UI is faster, noticeably. As release candidate it lives up to that title because it certainly is release ready. Not one BSOD or GPF and all my old applications run fine. All of my hardware components were successfully identified and drivers installed first time. Media Player 12 and Windows 7 Media Center are two of my favorite revamps. Both improve on what was already very good. W7MC is a compelling reason to build a HTPC system around Windows.

If you've got old hardware then maybe it's time to upgrade. Why do people expect computers to last 5 to 10 years? Computers need to be upgraded every 2 years if you're a serious computer user. It's common in business to refresh desktop hardware every 18 to 24 months.

It's time to retire XP and move with the times. Vista is nowhere near as bad as people made out, but Windows 7 is a worthwhile upgrade. If gaming is your thing then buy a console. Gaming should be about fun, not about frame rates.

  27. Moshster
    May 3rd, 2009 | 00:14

@30 There is nothing gullible about it, you just don't understand how modern businesses are reacting to consumer demand for ever more sophisticated solutions. You expect a computer to last 7-8 years??? This isn't the 80s mate. People need to get used to upgrading computer hardware every 2 years to keep pace with technological advancements. It's not like computers still cost thousands of dollars/pounds. Companies like Dell have helped to reduce costs greatly. $500/£500 every two years for a new computer is hardly expensive these days. I spend/waste more than that a year on junk food.

There are so many ignorant pricks here that it's ridiculous:

    1) Windows 7 is faster than XP, even on older hardware.

    2) 7 uses more RAM, but only "IF IT'S AVAILABLE" ffs. If I have 8GB RAM, it will use a lot more than if I ran it on a 512MB RAM machine. It's called app caching, which if it doesn't affect performance, which it doesn't, then it's fantastic. If apps are using near the RAM limit, then precache will compensate and lower or eliminate its RAM usage.

    3) XP sucks. It's far too old, and has a disgusting UI. Get a clue.

    4) Dx10 completely whips Dx9.x, let alone what Dx11 will do. Yet again, more idiots saying that it has little benefits. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DirectX

Educating the idiots ever since I came into this world…

  29. Emm

"1) Windows 7 is faster than XP, even on older hardware."

Not quite! 7's Explorer was done better and faster than Vista's, but you can't compare it anyway with XP's because XP lacks Aero and that wouldn't be a fair comparison. Overall, I enjoy the things that XP lacks:
    - extensionless selection when renaming files with extensions visible
    - the conflict manager when copying, moving or renaming
    - faster and less annoying thumbnail system
    - + shift activated context menu items, especially the integration of the command line option that would otherwise be installed through a powertoy on XP.
    - easier to manage start menu… my2c
    - I also like the Windows simplifies update feature… if you have a legit key, that is

I know that some features were present in Vista also but I just talking from a XP-over-7 point of view.

Overall, I can also mention that 7's explorer menus are a tad faster… but on a fast system that's hardly noticeable.

    "2) 7 uses more RAM"

Like all more complex systems… RAM will be used… so, no surprise here. In fact, with 8GB of RAM, the page file might be reduces to minimum, for diagnostic purposes.
My 7100 x64 uses 600 to 700 MB with Aero, Catalyst, Everest and NOD32 active… so not a bad number. And if I shut down services that are rarely used, I might even lower it.

Regarding the releases… it's meant to be used with apps that don't work with 7 and not as toys to test cracks out! The bare minimum!

@39 – What can a another brand or custom PC do that a cost effective Dell can't do? And a Dell XPS m1130 isn't exactly a cheap computer either for most people, but it is cheaper than equivalent spec from other vendors when you take into consideration the service support you get from Dell. See, people like you that use terms like "noob" don't really understand real world concepts such as "value for money". You will when you're older and realize that there are more important things than video games. I don't need a computer that plays CoD4 at 10,000fps. I just need computer that runs my work applications as productively as possible. I only care about DirectX in as far as it is also useful for certain business applications, it's not just for people who only know how to use their thumbs.

And all you XPbots will have a caniption fit when Win7 outsells BOTH XP AND Vista. Then you will have to eat your words so you had better make them as sweet as possible as you may not like the taste after they mold for a bit.

And yes I am a Win7 Beta Tester with MS and so far every build I have tested for MS makes Win7 SUPERIOR in search time-graphics-networking-internet speed-etc. In fact if Gates and company would have listened to us and waited on Vista till it was like Win7 is now, as it was suppose to be; then we would not be having this conversation.

    May 3rd, 2009 | 18:05

@47 Jack: I think it is meant for companies that migrate to Windows 7 but have some important apps that isn't compatible that they need to run at the same time as the Windows 7 apps. It's not uncommon for companies to use a few apps special made by a former employee that is no longer around and if they are still happy with that app they don't want to spend time/money making a new one.

Will Punkbuster recognise XP Mode as a valid XP OS? If so would it work to run games like Battlefield Heroes in XP Mode so I don't have to dualboot XP each time I want to play?

You can install all Windows XP programs in Windows XP theme mode then you can run the programs in Windows 7.. This is really usefull. For example u have a program that needs Windows xp. But you are using Windows 7. So run the mode install the program restart ur pc and use your program under Windows 7 :)

Damn twats adding their "clever" malware crap onto the files and packing as an .exe…Every single rapidshare link I've tried on the site has had the same server 89.exe in them for a month or so…

The reason Vista required so much more hardware power to run over XP is the fact MS put all this DRM crap in the core of the operating system. It constantly monitors everything through these encrypted channels that is insanely CPU intensive. All this crap limits functionality not increases it. You actually need more CPU cycles to do less in Vista over XP and Seven just continues this idiotic idea. In order to prevent active attacks, device drivers are required to poll the underlying hardware every 30ms for digital outputs and every 150 ms for analog ones to ensure that everything appears kosher. This means that even with nothing else happening in the system, a mass of assorted drivers has to wake up thirty times a second just to ensure that… nothing continues to happen. In addition to this polling, further device-specific polling is also done, for example Vista polls video devices on each video frame displayed in order to check that all of the grenade pins (tilt bits) are still as they should be.

The one thing I'm sure of is that I don't want Microsoft's opinion of Window's Seven, Vista, or XP. I want a third party's unbiased comparison.

@46 – People should be forced to upgrade at some point because why should Microsoft be forced to support an out of date operting system. Microsoft is a BUSINESS, not a charity.

@50 – Windows 7 is more than "eye candy", infact there is little eye candyin W7 that wasn't already there in Vista. W7 is simply a better operating system under the hood. If you need a fast, comaptible, reliable and stable OS, then Windows 7 is the one. It's faster, more compatible, more reliable and stable than XP (and Vista). As long as you have the right hardware platform for it; you can't compare W7 to XP on old hardware.

@57 – What you say is true to some degree, but secure computing, or even draconian computing, is the future. Intellectual property rights require such measures. However, as always, with time the hardware will catch up with user requirements and most of the "extra" proessing will be offloaded from the main CPU. It's always been the case that ieas are implemented in software first and eventually hardware advances catch up.
