well as Windows XP took 4 years of updates before it was finished, and Vista is still a half finished pile of dogmess, i’ll grab this in the year 2011 when service pack 2 is out.

most manufacturing companies get an oem version before its actual retail release date for testing. i have 64bit ultimate which i got 4 weeks ago but its only for that one company.

windows 7 is pretty sweet, i’ve been using it to play cod5, farcy and nfs shift. I have a fair fresh xp pro sp3 install on a another partition but i’ve been happy with 7 and don’t mind using it even for a bit of design with cs4 suite.
the main problem is that u have to worry about maintaining a windows system constantly. anti virus, spy ware and the rest of the ‘waste of system resources’ and even simply just stolen possibly hours or days of your life you can’t get back from dealing with infected computers.
run snow leopard on the same system and watch it fly. there’s nothing really you lose from not using a windows os, the win os actually becomes better running inside osx with vmware/parallels/virtualbox etc..
the only thing that i think really that you want to boot into windows for is to play games.
gosh, I read thru the posts and wondered whenever somebody would overly or coverly promote OSx. Indeed filph. is right, people don’t lose anything for not using Windows, they, however, lose/waste a lot when they buy a Apple computer to play with OSx.
Go for windows 7 henry, you wont regret it. It’s probably the first time Microsoft pulls out a finished OS as a RTM release. Don’t need to wait SP1/whatever to fully use it. My computer isn’t a reference, but the last time I had a problem with it was back when the RC was release and it was related to a rogue driver. Updated the driver and since then it works like a charm. no slow down after x months of use or anything as with the older Windows releases, and I don’t even use a cleaner/software to optimize Windows besides a defragmentation software.

Erm… I don’t get the “Loader”/orig. ISO vs. pre-cracked version debate I must say.
As far as I understand this the OEM version is not cracked at all. It’s a genuine windows version that simply needs not activation or key because it is aimed at mass installation customers. So no pre-cracking involved. The only thing UP2Date or BIE did is slipstreaming the recent updates.
Or is this not the case? This confuses me!

When you install you untick the serial box and go ahead with the install, when it loads to desktop for the first time just leave it as it activates using the OEM thing, then reboot and activate your product, i have been using this since the 64 bit september release.
whoever said they will wait till SP1 is a complete n00b, windows 7 is essentially vista but with all the problems vista had worked on/modified or taken away all together, user account control etc, it starts and shuts down very quickly and has drivers for everything i have needed, i got blue screen of death after first install but nothing since, very fast and nice GUI, i am def keeping it.

@ 48 you can update but you never know when microsoft will crack the crack with an update, i would assume there will be no need for updates for a short time anyway but from the OEM versions ive been using i have had no problems updating as they all pass WGA in my previous installs of vista 64

@60: Not really, they always do monthly releases with that months hot fixes integrated, saves time for those doing a current fresh install.

@martin If you have the BIE 64 bit version from Sept, there is no need to dl and install this one. Your version you are running now has all the updates on it already that this one has slipstreamed. All this is, is the same OEM version with the newest updates on it.
For the naysayers, this OS works very well, the best “out of the box” OEM Microsoft has made. Minimum requirements say 1 gig of ram but I have installed it on computers with 512megs and it worked fine. The slowest CPU I installed on was a Sempron running at 1.6 Ghz with a gig of ram. It had a Vista compatable AGP video card and a newer Audigy sound card. And all drivers installed first run. It plays “most” games for that vintage of computer still. No blue screens etc. If you cannot get it to activate, which happens on a very small percentage, then use the Windows 7 loader by DAZ.

some other things which my pc runs slow when vista tries to load something.
Is windows 7 a much better OS and does it have any of these problems is it tweak able where we can stop using certain services that are not needed, not just this any recommended apps for it.
If i do an upgrade will it make and old file of my windows or will it just upgrade the install? as i am wondering etc.

henry – I’d go for a dual-boot.
Snow Leopard and Windows 7 both on the same system – I’d use OSX as my main OS and will always have W7 to fall back to if you ever need to use a windows only app.
Best of both worlds.
Using this version currently, works great, system properties shows it as genuine. The only issue I remember was having to untick register windows online during installation.

Info says not to run it on a partition, doesn’t that mean you can’t dual boot it?
There was a lot of talk about M$ ‘big brothering’ some .dll files for major software developers (ex. Adobe and Autodesk) so that you could not use cracked versions of their software.
Windows 7 was reported the OS to start this process.
So I would say that as an OS, its looking good but as an OS to run cracked software, it could be bad.

@henry, go for Windows. Don’t be put off by scaremongers spouting about malware etc. Windows is attacked because it is the most popyular general OS in the world. The security features are much tougher now anyway. I’ve been using 7 since beta and have not had any reason to install any anti-malware as yet, Windows built in protection mechanisms do a good job of keeping you safe. [Of course, it can't stop any user from doing stupid things online

Only n00bs would say wait for SP1/SP2. Windows 7 is by far the most stable and polished version of Windows Microsoft has ever done, they clearly listened to the criticism surrounding Vista.
Also to the n00bs saying Windows 7 is basically Vista, well not it’s not. Yes it has lots of the same base code but if you took time to read all the articles on MSDN and Channel 9 you’d know that the Win 7 kernal is vastly tweaked over Vista’s original. The GUI render pipeline is extremely optimized and all the GUI related slowness in Vista are gone. Windows 7 is what Vista would’ve been if Microsoft had been presurred into releasing something before it was finished.

You will need the x86 version, I got a Dell Inspiron from 2006 with about the same specs, I am also thinking to upgrade to 7. My colleague has the same inspiron as me and he already upgraded to the RTM and he told me it was running great.

But does this mean that when there are already two partitions on the disk (one with my Win 7 RC1 I’m using now, and one empty partition), the Win 7 Setup will delete my files/partitions? Or can I choose the partition it will install the new Win 7 on?

This version (oct 09) doesn’t need loader/activator. If you’re going to use that, might as well just grab any version available.
@QUE – You CAN run Windows 7 on that spec. I have Windows 7 on a HP Netbook, and that only has an Atom processor and Intel GMA graphics and Windows 7 is still faster than XP was.
For the one who was asking, you can install this release on to a specific partition without affecting other partitions. I selected custom (clean) install, then the partition you want to install on, as for earlier releases.
The activation seems to have worked OK (at least control panel says it’s activated). You just need to uncheck the box which says activate online, and leave the product key blank. Then, near the end of the setup, it opens a command window to enter its own product key.
The only thing that puzzled me for a while is that this release installed with Windows Display Manager disabled for some reason (unlike others I have tried), so I couldn’t find a link in control panel to do advanced personalization, such as configuring Windows fonts. There was a link to troubleshoot Aero problems instead, and this found and fixed the problem, so that the relevant link appeared in Control Panel.

after clicking install, it says it cannot find and CD/DVD drivers, and will not install without them.
I even put the drivers on a flash drive, and browsed for it, but it wouldn’t except them.

If you are currently running Vista x86, then yes, you will need to do a “fresh install” on Windows 7 x64.
Good luck & don’t forget to backup everything you don’t want to lose when you reformat.

Has happened to me before, just burn the iso again but in the slowest speed possible. This fixed it for me and bunch others.

It’s because you don’t need to make a partition win7 will make it for you and will make another partition of 100mb for system.
I left 60gb unpartitioned and the installition made it as drive C (system).

This is just like any other retail windows cd, it installs too free space or over existing system….as long as going from x64 to x64. x86 to x86, not x86 to x64.

141 yorkie, I have the same issue. Plus, my installation took 3-4 hours and it didn’t work. I tried both versions (32-64) through DVD and USB, it takes the welcome screen 25-30 min. to appear. Has anyone else had this issue. I want to know before I start taking apart my hardware. Cheers

As for others, probably best you just grab a torrent of this somewhere, instead of the small links here (so you get all from 1 source).
Burn to DVD at a speed of about 8X and as long as you don’t have a RAID setup, should be fine (otherwise make sure you have loader disc for those).

have followed the instructions to the letter, unticked the ‘activate windows when i go online’ box, but it needs a product key. wher do i find this?
Downloaded from hotfile, gave no errors, extracting the rar files gave no errors, burning the iso file on dvd+rw gave no errors, installing the OS gave always the same error: “files missing or corrupt”. tried 3 other dvd+rw with no luck. Also the HDD drive went berzerk on the partitions and now only works as sata external. Gave up. Sticking with Vista 64 Ultimate for a while longer. PeeaCe.

Never mind the first set of files i downloaded were not the BIE files but the Up2Date files.
soon as i installed with BIE with no product ID and unticking the activate windows online on an unpartitioned bit of my HDD.
it worked a treat. avoid UP2Date it does not work as an OEM.

I installed this on my 3 PCs. No issues at first, all got activated. The latest install however (about 2 weeks old) now stopped saying it is activated… now asks for activation and will expire in about a month.
The other 2 installs are still shown as activated.
Guess this volume key was blacklisted. Beware.

i installed this on a virtual machine (vbox) then ran the date forward 30 days.. it gives the message “this copy of windows is not genuine”. anyone else had any luck?
ok got it working.. when you install de-check the “activate automatically when im online” then on the following screen pick “default settings” (the top option), a command prompt will appear and after a few seconds you’ll see a key get installed. computer will reboot and you should be all set.
That typical English sheep-shagger from the forums is back uploading 100mb exe’s as rar files on rapidshare. Be careful.

I am not a tech or OS-nerd in any way, I use my computer for graphics and audio editing and production so I was a bit hesitant before installing this. After reading through all the comments I decided to give it a go. I run a VAIO laptop with 4 GB RAM, 400 GB HD and Dual Core 2,4Ghz CPU btw..
The only thing I am regretting is that I didn’t install this beautiful OS earlier… It’s just sooo amazing in every way. Install was hassle free, no crashes, speed is just AMAZING compared to Vista. All my drivers work just fine, even external MIDI controllers and USB soundcards.
If you are still on Vista and not sure about this, stop that. Just install it and you will see what power a PC really can have. I’m probably buying this OS. Very very impressed with Microsoft
