Microsoft Windows 7: first screenshots

Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) on Tuesday took the wraps of the preview version of Windows 7, which will be the successor to Vista. Julie Larson Green, Microsoft’s vice president for Windows experience, hosted a demo in which she walked attendees through the features of the operating system. At first glance, Windows 7 maintains the streamlined look of Vista, but appears more muted — even Windows XP-like. Mostly, Microsoft seems to be focusing more on functionality, possibly in a bid to put some distance between Windows 7 and the criticisms which have dogged Vista.

Most obviously, a quick tour through Windows 7 reveals its new taskbar, which is sparser than in previous iterations of the OS. From the screen shots, it’s clear that Microsoft has listened to criticism and tuned many features, including search and access to security controls. The look and feel of the user interface is also highly customizable. The version of Windows 7 previewed at PDC is technically a pre-beta release. The official shipment of the final version is expected in about a year’s time.

My current system rocks! I have Vista 64 bit (!) with 4 GB ram and dual core AMD. It is so much faster than my older system (win xp 32 bit)! I will NOT upgrade to windows 7. —> don’T fix a working system ;)

Clever Microsoft, force people to buy the bad windows, then sell them a good windows, it worked with windows ME -> xp and they’re doing it again.

The only way that M$ may put a “alright” copy of Windows out is if they lose the registry and stop copying off of other OS’s ..okay so lets see they stole from Apple (osx) and now looking at these screen shots they are stealing from linux (kde).. I mean honestly come off it. I turned MAC becuase it is something that works and I have it dual-booted with Ubuntu. The only time I “have” to use Windows is at work or if I am fixing someone else’s “PC” .. I engourage everyone to try using alternative OS’s , whether it’s going out a dishing the coin for a MAC or dumping Windows and trying on a copy of Linux such as Ubuntu becuase it is so easy to get use to. Who needs a bloated version of Windows for everyday use, it’s crap.

i was one of the 1st windows power users that hated vista,
in fact i hated them from their earlys betas, but i changed my mind when i tried some unnatented “stripped” editions found on the net,

in fact i made one of my own with size fitted on a single cd-rom,

keep in mind that alot of advanced old windows users are discouraged by the interface full of wizards , noob intended etc. that is cos vista is software for multipurpose envirnments used for upcoming Tvs with Hds, Stands, Atms, etc.

vista has better core which means explorer or maxthon wont hang with 50 tabs opened and things like that

just try a tiny – stripped- unattended version with all the clutter and unwanted services in the backgroundd gone,
my version was tested and run smooth in vmware with 256 ram only …

@103 – I think you will want to upgrade once you see how much more free memory you can have :)

@109 – I did the same too until I switched to Windows Server 2008 which is the Vista Kernel but by default is stripped down by MS themselves. Windows Server 2008 makes a great workstation OS also. Instead of stripping out bits, you just opt to enable extra bit you might want. I have Server 2008 consuming less than 300Mb post logon.

all laptops with atom processors starting from 500$ are vista tested and equipped,

with ram prices and computer parts so low these days if you have a pc that hasnt got 2 gigs of ram to run smoothly vista then dont blame microsoft for that,

stay with xp and pick up an aero theme to fool yourself instead

Dammit, why didn’t they add the gloss to XP. Vista is one irratating piece of crap. For gods sake, just let me go about my business in peace.

Well it looks like MS needed a kick in the pants to try harder. I don’t care what anyone says, Vista is crap. Stick that in your pants and smoke it DarthSteve.
It looks like they’ve actually tried to do something right this time and that’s directly a result of all the complaining. The consumer is always right. If you don’t make it right we don’t buy it.
In this case we don’t buy it either way, but that’s besides the point :-) We recommend!

    @ RU

you are right about the mainstream marketing of microsoft,

    but i insist:

all the average users can complaint but,

the advanced user can take advantage of Vista for his own shake by throwing away all the unecessary bits and pieces of a 17gig of full install,

after SP1 of August 08 especially, vista matured
