Microsoft Windows 7: first screenshots

Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) on Tuesday took the wraps of the preview version of Windows 7, which will be the successor to Vista. Julie Larson Green, Microsoft’s vice president for Windows experience, hosted a demo in which she walked attendees through the features of the operating system. At first glance, Windows 7 maintains the streamlined look of Vista, but appears more muted — even Windows XP-like. Mostly, Microsoft seems to be focusing more on functionality, possibly in a bid to put some distance between Windows 7 and the criticisms which have dogged Vista.

Most obviously, a quick tour through Windows 7 reveals its new taskbar, which is sparser than in previous iterations of the OS. From the screen shots, it’s clear that Microsoft has listened to criticism and tuned many features, including search and access to security controls. The look and feel of the user interface is also highly customizable. The version of Windows 7 previewed at PDC is technically a pre-beta release. The official shipment of the final version is expected in about a year’s time.

the new taskbar looks ugly. and i wish they would actually tune down the graphics for folders and stuff, i still dont get how to make vista explorer show all folders in the classic view with the details and size for EVERY folder, everytime i open the explorer. and i know about all the options settings, to keep settings for all folders or invidual ones, but it just doesnt stick the way i want to…

@13 – just becuase you dont know how to use all the features in Windows doesnt mean it sucks. If you had a good computer and not some Dell POS you would probably enjoy Windows a lot more as well.

Windows 7 is basically Vista, but with much higher performance, some bug fixes, a little more functionality, and (supposedly) less space usage. If they can actually do all that then it will be a great operating system

  23. capsgram
    October 29th, 2008 | 19:39

like what Dos said, probably needs its own system just to run it self and than a dual boot to get 5 or 6 more pc’s on Linux running a cluster…..and than you can run it smoothly.

like we all have super computers all lines up to run a program that sucks butt, they should have just stayed the course and made xp better some how, or stream lined it like linux with the capabilities of a cluster.

You do realize your nice monitor won’t have fingerprints all over it. You’ll have to purchase a new touch screen monitor. A program can’t make any monitor touch screen…duh. The monitor itself will have to be touchscreen and you’ll have to go out and buy one. Did you think that with a program they were going to make 15″ CRT’s touch monitors? LMFAO!

  28. ak_rulz
    October 29th, 2008 | 19:49

Speaking to participants at a Microsoft developers’ conference in Los Angeles, Steven Sinofsky, senior vice president of Windows, said Microsoft was learning its lessons from Vista, and making sure that Windows 7 would be fully compatible with all relevant devices and applications on launch.

Among the innovations unveiled by Microsoft was a touchscreen capability that will allow users to select folders and control programs without using a mouse.

Windows 7 will also feature faster bootup times, an updated task bar that includes previews of open windows, a new desktop look, and a set of features optimised for laptops. It would also make it easier to coordinate and access files over networks, and to automatically configure settings for different networks.

The new software will ditch some prominent features included in Vista, including Calendar, Windows Mail, Movie Maker, Contacts and Photo Gallery, which will now be available for free download from the Microsoft website.

I hope this will not be the same crap as vista.
Of course, this system will be demanding. And if OS alone uses a ton of resources without running any user applications, that OS is not effective.
I don’t need a super nice Vista-like skin, I need a functional and effective OS.
XP is closer to being an effective OS than Vista. I hope MS will do better with Win 7 so it will not be Vista 1.1 as someone mentioned previously.

    October 29th, 2008 | 20:04

Wow…Yahtzee was right. Never do anything for fans. Fans will forever be whiny btches who will never be satisfied by anything you do…

Go ahead and keep XP, nobody really cares anymore. You have been spewing the same crap out of your mouths since Vista was first announced! No, there will never be another operating system like XP because in the standards of today (including both Mac OS and certain key distributions of Linux), XP was pathetically out-of-date. If your brains are too minuscule to logically grasp that idea, I feel sorry for you. You are so hell bent on remaining in the past that you are prepared to tie down legitimate progress just to say that Microsoft is evil.

I do, however, feel like the people yelling “Ubuntu rules” have a point. I REALLY like the look, feel, and overall performance of Ubuntu. However, since modern video games (ie games that Wine cant emulate) are pretty much all I do with computers, Ubuntu will continue to remain second on my list until MS or equivalent decide to copy the exact look, feel, and functionality of Ubuntu, but add their legendary support for programs to it…

That will be the day every computer not running this new OS will burst into flames from the awesomeness…

I’m at PDC08 and have the “bits”. The current M3 release given out to us all will install and run on a 1Gb machine and still leave over 500Mb free. With tweaks I’ve gotten it up to as much as 700Mb free. I’ve also seen it running on lowly Netbooks ;)

The new taskbar is a great improvement on previous incarnations. And so what if it looks like KDE? Obviously people like the more compacted look and feel of the new task bar since it’s design was influenced by community feedback.

Overall it’s very responsive, the desktop window manager uses less memory than the Vista. Even for a milestone pre-beta release it’s surprisingly stable. Disk Manager now has support for VHDs which got a huge applause. The new RDP client is smart enough to take on decoding of video so that you can even playback HD video via RDP now (requires codecs to be installed lcoally, with fallback to previous mode of operation without codecs). Also new in RDP client is multi monitor support.

There’s a new API for integrating apps into the taskbar.

Also shown but not released yet, is Silverlight for Mobiles. Note I say “mobiles” and not “Windows Mobiles”. Silverlight for Mobiles will be on Symbian and Windows Mobile. No iPhone since it’s a closed platform for that level of integration. (iPhone fanboys complain to Apple, not Microsoft)

Performance of Silverlight Mobile is impressive will practically no recoding needed other than to add code to make your apps device display aware. Very cool.

The Windows Azure Live Mesh stuff is pretty cool too, your own personalized cloud computing experience.

@26 – You can buy thin touch sensors to place over monitors or other surfaces. At PDC demonstrations are being done on 40inch screens and table top surfaces. The surface technology will be big, it’s very responsive and great fun to use. Linux is way behind now.

    October 29th, 2008 | 20:55

@49 – It’s KDE taskbar on steroids ;) What the screen caps don’t tell you is all the things the new taskbar can do. The old right click menu operations on a task bar button have been taken to new levels to make managing tasks even simpler and with fewer clicks.

Much of the new stuff in W7 is about usability and blurring where the desktop ends and the cloud starts, just as much as it is about performance gains.

  54. TheOne
    October 29th, 2008 | 20:55

XP sold better than vista and it’s been a long time since a new OS was needed. Vista in it’s short life is already soon to be replaced. Vista to XP is what Windows ME was to win98. MS knows the numbers suck and the majority say it sucks with their opinions and lack of updating XP. Sure there will always be those on the fringe who have to get the latest even if it’s far from the greatest. There are even those that MS can convince that a turd isn’t a turd and that the emperor does have clothes on.

Is anyone going to buy it ? DX10 and 64bit were the only reasons why I changed to Vista. DX11 will be running on Vista as well, so why bother ?! Wonder what kind of performance boost everyone is talking about.. using a solid state drive raid0 and overclocking to 4 or 4.5ghz will give more boosting than anyone needs !

  58. blargh
    October 29th, 2008 | 21:10

    @56 mimimi
And the OS not hogging resources is another way to boost performance even more over vista. There’s no point in the OS using more resources to be more shiny. I couldn’t care less for glowy transparent windows, as long as I can run as much software as possibly (compatibility) while using as little resources as possible (performance). Usability, windows has always been fine (much due to it being mainstream), so that’s a detail. Vista failed in both compatibility and performance compared to XP. Hell, even DX10 performs better under XP (though XP can only handle so much of it, which is why it’s technically unsupported) than under vista and it’s a key feature.

Like I said before, show me compatibility and performance comparable to xp (performance got better with vista’s SP, but xp’s SP3 is still ahead) and I’ll gladly switch for certain newer stuff (DX10+ etc). I’ll still dislike all the glowy & transparent stuff, but that can be fixed.

The people who complain that it’s copy of something else are just people who want something different to play with rather than something that works well and is usable. Or you’re just anti-Microsoft for the sake of being anti-anything that is popular or successful. Yes, I said successful. In the greater scheme of things, Windows is here and it’s everywhere. Analyzing all these complex augments for and against, which version is inferior or superior we are all neglecting the “real” question that needs to be asked, which is…

Is it better then Halo? ;-)

    On a more serious note.

Microsoft needs to distance themselves from vista and quick. Apple is making inroads with OSX and their “slice of the OS pie” is increasing year on year.

I hope they can repair some of the damage Vista did with Windows 7 and not just give it a “coat of paint” and expect people not to notice.

As Windows is Microsoft’s main source of income, this is going to be one of Microsoft’s most important releases for some time.

@19m SORRY BUT YOU ARE WRONG, unless you currently have a touch screen, Win7 will not offer you touch capabilities.

It will allow all other cheapo LCD manufacturer’s to release more substandard LCD’s with outdated touch technology, like IR Touch, and sell it to unknowing people as always.

Just like Apples i-phone, they buy a company ready to close the doors, take over their out of date touch technology and release it in the i-Phone as if it is cutting edge, not 15 years old.

It’s funny that competitive products have had better priducts than the i-Phone for over 5 years now, with better touch technology and software, yet Apple markets to the newbs and casual users because the device is useless and doesn’t cmpete in the business segment, and what do you know they CREATE their market themselves, out of unsuspecting suckers who buy into their lies.

Don’t drink the cool aid, do your own research!

I wouldn’t be surprised if this came out to be a service pack. The whole thing looks like a gui lift with some performance enhancement. Its too early to even be criticising it if we havent even used it.

Vista is pretty fine in its current form now, really stable I have no issues at all. Windows 7 looks like a refined version of Vista rather than anything new, I’ll probably give it a spin when its released and cracked by some fine people!

@88 totally agree, my almost year old Nokia N82 is more feature packed and powerful than the “3G Iphone”, Apple have created a glossy lifestyle which people buy into. Nokia produce infinitely superior products, sure the phone may look ugly, but when it comes to upgrade time I’m going to stick with Nokia’s N series, the symbian OS in its current state is incredibly fast and stable, I have not had a crash or reset on my phone all year, thats all that matter. Screw Apple’s crud.

Wow, people seem to get really angry at other people’s choice of what to buy. Most of you don’t seem to acknowledge that not everyone wants all the same software and features as you. I use OSX for my photography work and just general computer activities, and it’s fine, it works. I use XP if I want to play a game, or better yet, I use a console.
I never understand all this ‘my OS of choice is better than Windows’. Windows 7 has clearly copied many features from OSX, but I’m comfortable in the knowledge that it won’t be any better, and if it is, I don’t really care, well done.

And in regards to mokka’s phone talk, some people want the iPhone and some prefer more business orientated phones, who f*cking cares. If I wanted some over complicated feature laden phone, I’d buy one, and let people who want something else from their phone just get on with it.

thing that bothers me is people are looking at 7 like its a new vista…

are you aware that Vista was never a dev project for home users to begin with? there were two projects started quite a few years ago, one was Project Longhorn which was to be for the business community, and the other Project Blackcomb for the private sector.

Vista is the direct result of those of us who kept stealing the alphas and beta builds of Longhorn to test it out. M$ got sick of it and decided that since there was such a high demand for the longhorn and people wanted to test it out SO badly, they might as well sell it in beta form and give it a new name… that way people would generate thier complaints and the company could work from that like they do with beta-testers, only with the added bonus of getting idiots to BUY the betas.

    Thus Vista was born.

Windows 7 is project blackcomb, it was started at the SAME TIME Longhorn was started. so yes, it appears similar to vista, but it isnt going to BE vista, or some pretty shell-glossed revamp. It will be a differnt animal, but i am sure that most dumbasses will judge it on looks rather than capability and thus believe its a macos ripoff or linux ripoff. Face it, as powerful as those other two might be the bulk community always returns to microsoft, sure we experiment with the others, but they just arent as reliable in the longrun.

The only way that M$ may put a “alright” copy of Windows out is if they lose the registry and stop copying off of other OS’s ..okay so lets see they stole from Apple (osx) and now looking at these screen shots they are stealing from linux (kde).. I mean honestly come off it. I turned MAC becuase it is something that works and I have it dual-booted with Ubuntu. The only time I “have” to use Windows is at work or if I am fixing someone else’s “PC” .. I engourage everyone to try using alternative OS’s , whether it’s going out a dishing the coin for a MAC or dumping Windows and trying on a copy of Linux such as Ubuntu becuase it is so easy to get use to. Who needs a bloated version of Windows for everyday use, it’s crap.

i was one of the 1st windows power users that hated vista,
in fact i hated them from their earlys betas, but i changed my mind when i tried some unnatented “stripped” editions found on the net,

in fact i made one of my own with size fitted on a single cd-rom,

keep in mind that alot of advanced old windows users are discouraged by the interface full of wizards , noob intended etc. that is cos vista is software for multipurpose envirnments used for upcoming Tvs with Hds, Stands, Atms, etc.

vista has better core which means explorer or maxthon wont hang with 50 tabs opened and things like that

just try a tiny – stripped- unattended version with all the clutter and unwanted services in the backgroundd gone,
my version was tested and run smooth in vmware with 256 ram only …

@103 – I think you will want to upgrade once you see how much more free memory you can have :)

@109 – I did the same too until I switched to Windows Server 2008 which is the Vista Kernel but by default is stripped down by MS themselves. Windows Server 2008 makes a great workstation OS also. Instead of stripping out bits, you just opt to enable extra bit you might want. I have Server 2008 consuming less than 300Mb post logon.

all laptops with atom processors starting from 500$ are vista tested and equipped,

with ram prices and computer parts so low these days if you have a pc that hasnt got 2 gigs of ram to run smoothly vista then dont blame microsoft for that,

stay with xp and pick up an aero theme to fool yourself instead

Well it looks like MS needed a kick in the pants to try harder. I don’t care what anyone says, Vista is crap. Stick that in your pants and smoke it DarthSteve.
It looks like they’ve actually tried to do something right this time and that’s directly a result of all the complaining. The consumer is always right. If you don’t make it right we don’t buy it.
In this case we don’t buy it either way, but that’s besides the point :-) We recommend!

    @ RU

you are right about the mainstream marketing of microsoft,

    but i insist:

all the average users can complaint but,

the advanced user can take advantage of Vista for his own shake by throwing away all the unecessary bits and pieces of a 17gig of full install,

after SP1 of August 08 especially, vista matured
