    Allready downloaded and installed Windows 7 7231 x32-iAPULA even they said it is the same as 7229 they just keep changing the number of version not the actual gear of the windows itself so the only official release which is 7100 is the accurate one

    x64 = 64 bit OS, address' more than 3.5 gigs of ram

    x86 = 32 bit OS

    x64 is geared towards 64 bit proc., and if you don't know if you have a 64 bit proc., you should do more homework before downloading these OS'

    Vista x64 stands for 64-bit computing. You'll have to have 64-bit capable components to use it. x86 is being used in a different context. x86 stands for Intel's current version of its microprocessing computing, starting from the 80186 (or 186) to 286, 386, 486dx, 586 (known as Pentium). It actually spanned from 16-bit to 32-bit to 64-bit.

    In reality, you should be referencing Vista as: Vista 32-bit x86 , or Vista 64-bit (x86-64). It is definitely confusing, which is why most people stopped referencing Intel CPUs as x86 in casual conversation.

    There are Vista versions for non-x86 architecture, such as Itanium.

    In order to use 64-bit computing, you'll have to have
    a) a CPU that supports 64-bit (such as Core 2 Duo, Athlon 64)
    b) an OS (Operating System like Vista x64) that supports 64-bit
    c) drivers supporting 64-bit (for video, audio, etc..) and
    d) programs that support 64-bit (such as FireFox 64-bit, VirtualDub 64-bit)

    If you have to ask yourself whether you need 32-bit or 64-bit Vista, you most likely only need 32-bit. Most normal applications are written in 32-bit and there is not enough substantial difference for the normal user to switch to 64-bit.

    Use x86 when you have less than 4GB of RAM (4GB+ won't recognize)
    Use x64 when you have more than 4GB of RAM (Will recognize)

    Hi all,

    I've been running W7 for some weeks now and it looks and feel a little bit better than Vista – nothing compared to XP anyway.
    looks like the "winsxs folder" bug is still there. Mine has grown uncontrollably since I've installed; it's now over 6GB and no I didn't install anything – not even an antivirus or office.

    I removed Vista for this very reason.. I'd have hoped W7 would have addresses this; apparently not.

    I have 8 gigs of ram, Still using Vista Black 64, Been holding out on windows 7 till it gets more items tested, Glad i did not get the 1st or hell even 4th release on this. Wondering if this is the one to get or should i wait a little longer. Hate to get this then next week have a new build out.

    Question it do i get or hold off ? New builds are out almost every week on this

    for those who don't know if they are 32/64bit:

    1. press start
    2. type dxdiag into search (for vista) or press run and type dxdiag (xp)
    3. press yes if a box comes up, if not wait for a window to load
    4. copy the processor details and type it into google
    5. there should be a few places where you can buy it/look at its specs. it will tell you there if it is capable of 64bit computing

    you can have more than 3gb of memory actually installed on the motherboard for 32 bit windows, but windows will only recognize 3gb of however much you have installed

    Ive been running 7231 32 bit on my laptop for a couple days and everything runs great. one thing thats great is you can plug in any usb hard drive even mp3 player and get infinite gb of ram lol. im definatly gonna download retail when it comes out

    Here's how to tell if you processor can handle 64 bit instructions:

    Download CPU-Z
    http://www.cpuid.com

    On the CPU tab in the instructions field, if EM64T is listed (along with MMX, etc) you are good to go with a 64 bit OS. Go 64. 32 bit is a thing of the past and your 32 bit apps will still work on it.

    @30 x86 does not mean 32bit. x86 is a CPU architecture label. x86 can be 32bit and 64bit, properly referred to as x86-32 and x86-64. Intel x86 is a different to Intel's true 64bit only CPU architecture, Itanium.

    For all those wondering, if you have a computer than is Intel Core 2 or AMD Athlon 64 based then you have a 64 bit processor and regardless of the amount of memory, you'll get better performance with 64bit Windows for the most part. Not all applications, however, are engineered to be 64bit optimal so don't expect every application to suddenly speed up.

    To all those people saying 32bit Windows cannot use more than 3.5Gb of memory, please stop!

    This is not completely true. Most versions of Windows, including Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit support physical address extension to access full 4Gb of memory. I use PAE mode in Vista 32bit to access the full 4Gb on mine. There is a small performance penalty, but it is negligible compared to the extra memory benefit. However, only the operating system will see the extra memory, not applications. Applications will still only see a maximum of 4Gb but the operating system can do some funky stuff to give more than one application it's own 4Gb of memory (assuming the computer has more than 4Gb, up to a maximum of 64Gb).

    downloading from official website is the first decision everyone takes, however most people cant get more than 1kb/s due to download limitations for excessive number of users downloading at same time.

    torrents/rapidshares make the charm and even releaves some of the official site server load.
