Microsoft unveils Office 2008 for MAC

Microsoft used the Macworld conference on Monday to release its much-anticipated Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac software suite. The Redmond, Wash.-based software giant promises the new suite will offer a unique and feature-rich Mac-like solution to Mac users for their personal, home office and business office needs. Han-Yi Shaw, lead program manager for Word in Microsoft’s Mac business unit, said the developers had four key goals in mind when developing the suite: discoverability, simplicity, professional output and compatibility. He added it was also important to Microsoft to create a product that would be Mac-like in its touch and feel.

Three different versions of Office 2008 for Mac are now available. The core suite is Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac and includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Entourage, plus Microsoft Exchange Server support and Automator tools, at $539.95 for the full edition and $319.95 for upgrades. Microsoft Office 2008 for MacHome and Student edition includes up to three licenses for $199.95. And for the professional enthusiast, Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac Special Media edition is $629.95, or $379.95 for the upgrade. Much like last year’s release of Microsoft’s Office 2007 for Windows, the Mac edition boasts a new user interface developers promise will be more intuitive for end users, along with an abundance of new features and capabilities. The only thing which needs to be fixed is obviously the price – I don’t know many people willing to pay so much for software…

WOW! apple…. Why do they keep making those things… Are there that many computer illiterate people in this world to keep them alive. Just buy a real computer and learn how to use it. Apple’s for MP3 players and thats all!

Nice one, but I thought an OS based upon UNIX running in industry standard Intel hardware was a proper computer, or do you know something I don’t genius?

bah. why do pc users get so offended by the idea that people might want to spend a bit extra for a computer that works consistently? ive been a pc/windows user all my life, and always just put up with crashes and resultant corrupt files, not to mention viruses (i make music, so my comp gets very stretched and crashes quite often).

i borrowed a macbook for a week from a friend, to edit a big cubase project, and that week sold me completely – no crashes, no glitches, and only once did it stop me to say i was asking too much of it. if you just want a desktop for internet browsing, office crap etc, a pc is fine, and dirt cheap. if you want a games machine (why not buy a console) pcs are expensive, but workable.

if you want to do anything creative and processor-intensive, do yourself a favour and buy a computer with a decent OS, ie – a Mac.

just dont get the macbook air, because – lets face it – its purely style over substance, designed for ‘writers’ who want to write their next novel in a starbucks.

and @12 – Mr Aranofsky(!), were you really hoping to get a copy of MS Office running on your network adaptor’s media access control?

    Armando….

You need to download a app called split and concat.

Open it up and then press on the concat tab and find the first file untitled_folder.zip.001.zip

It should now be a document like the others. Then drag it onto split and concat. You should be left with a file called untitled_folder.zip.

Click on this file and you should be left with a folder of the same name with the office dmg and serial in it.

why can’t people with pcs get used to the fact that an intel mac can run both vista and os x? it’s a beautiful thing really. macs are no longer just for people who are infected with the apple bug.

  36. zaph0d
    January 16th, 2008 | 22:15

The only way I would ever pay $500 to $700 for any piece of software is if it came with a free computer to install it on. I would not pay that much for ALL of the software that I use COMBINED (including OS). Remember that software is a recurring cost – you don’t buy it once but rather every year or so. With that in mind, it’s patently ridiculous to actually expect anyone to pay that much for a single suite of apps – EVER! I don’t care what said suite does, NOTHING would justify that price. Even if it was a one time cost it’s still mighty steep.

And they wonder why we pirate the stuff. Simple: we’re not all rich white american yuppies. Most of us wouldn’t be able to afford the software we use even if the price was actually worth it. I’m lucky enough to scrape together enough scratch for the computer itself never mind a couple of grand (per year) on top to put software on it. Ridiculous!

    January 16th, 2008 | 22:25

@tjt5: Because it’s still a Mac. Unless you like the proprietary hardware business model (read $$$ and more $) steer clear. You don’t even get the performance edge any more since they ditched scsi and went with Intel processors. And as far as the operating system goes, just get a real version of *nix. For a lot less money (in many cases read FREE) you can have all the reliability, performance, and stability without the krApple restrictions. And don’t start spouting out that “too hard to use” junk – if you can’t find a version of *nix you can use nowadays you don’t deserve to use a computer.

I would like to shift the topic from pc vs mac to everybody vs M$, where all wrath must be directed. Bleh. news flash: openoffice runs on every platform identically. Oh wait, not news? But this is? Look into the light people.

  39. zaph0d
    January 17th, 2008 | 00:17

@Atlas: 100% correct on both statements. M$ is exactly to blame for the outrageous cost of their software (it is they who set the price after all). OpenOffice exemplifies this. It does *BETTER* for free what M$$-Office does for over half a grand bi-annually. No-brainer anyone?

@Atlas: Openoffice is not supported in Leopard yet which is sad.

To all mac haters: are u simply mad be cause you can not effort it?
I have been a pc user for 10 years and just got me a macbook pro. I really like the laptop and the fact that i dont need to install 100 drivers for audio, graphic card, system drivers, etc etc.
Also there are so many nice things with macs like the system utiliy which gives me back possibility (like ghost for windows).
I probably will always have both pc and mac but i think each OS has its good and bad side.
It kinda pointless argument that i get tired of seeming time after time. Pretty much like the console trashing talks. Like Xbox 360 is better then PS3 or something like that. I have all the consoles cause i like games period. I mean if you do not like something just dont buy it!

Anyway thanks for the torrent. The price tag is kinda crazy.

    January 17th, 2008 | 03:28

@43: Your reasons for liking Macs are exactly my reasons for liking Kubuntu . . . which happens to be free :) (and most of it is what OS X is based on, Safari for example is just a port of Konqueror). But I’m curious, is neither version of Open Office working on 10.5 yet? I would think at least the X11 version would work, although I guess they did change from XFree86 to X.org, but X.org is more widely used otherwise anyways so I wouldn’t've thought porting it would be such a problem . . . but then again I’m not a programmer in the OpenOffice.org project!

But yeah, as to the price tag; people pay it. I know people like us, frequenting sites like this, laugh at such prices. But, but but but, working at a retail store I’ve learned that people are brainwashed into thinking they NEED Microsoft Office, so they’ll pay whatever price Microsoft throws at them. It’s sad, but they’re a captive audience who thinks they have no alternative.

The real statement should be made that it really isnt the computer, its what you use the computer for. Most PC and Mac users are ignorant the actual differences and shouldn’t voice their opinion unless they honestly know what they are talking about. Like the fact that Microsoft Office was initially created for Mac. Why does everyone seem to argue when no one really cares.
