Microsoft will release Win XP SP3 next week

Now that Windows Vista service pack 1 has been released, all eyes have shifted to Microsoft (NSDQ:MSFT)’s plans for Windows XP service pack 3, the final package of updates for the trusty OS. And, according to at least one source, Microsoft will roll out XP SP3 next Monday. As of Wednesday afternoon Pacific time, the BitTorrent search engine Mininova listed a 568.73 MB Windows XP Professional SP3 5503 file available for download. The file, which had 112 seeds and 417 leeches, had been downloaded 2083 times since it was posted Tuesday, according to the listing. According to the file description notes, Microsoft will release the final version of XP SP3 on March 24, but the 5503 test build passes all Windows Genuine Advantage checks and is able to download Windows updates that previous XP SP3 builds weren’t able to, which suggests that it could, in fact, be the final RTM build.

When Microsoft released Vista SP1 in February, the final RTM code was identical to the Vista SP1 Release Candidate (RC) 1 Refresh 2 test build that was released to a group of 15,000 testers two weeks earlier. A Microsoft spokesperson, perhaps weary from the months-long barrage of Vista SP1 related inquiries, said the final version of XP SP3 is still on target to be released the first half of calendar year 2008, and the XP SP3 5503 build was a minor interim build released to address one specific issue for a subset of private beta testers. XP SP3 was originally slated for release in 2006, but Microsoft has delayed it on numerous occasions since launching XP SP2 in August 2004. In February, Microsoft released XP SP3 Release Candidate 2 through its Download Center to users running PCs with XP SP2 installed.

You’re better off slipstreaming one of the many good post-SP2 updates out there (I use RyanVM). Super simple to do, plus there are tons of options available to customize it how you want, add drivers, make it an unattended install, etc etc. Even WMP11 and IE7 can be slipstreamed and work fine if that floats your boat.

Has no one bothered to read the article at the surce link provided by kennii?

It sure doesn’t look like it because if you had then you’de know that this is NOT the final RTM.

Below is the rest of the article after the description given by kennii……….

“This build was not intended for public release, and anyone who has that build and is not part of the private beta is working with bits that Microsoft can’t verify the integrity — it’s possible the bits may have been modified with malware or other bad code that Microsoft hasn’t tested,” the spokesperson said in an email.

XP SP3 was originally slated for release in 2006, but Microsoft has delayed it on numerous occasions since launching XP SP2 in August 2004. In February, Microsoft released XP SP3 Release Candidate 2 through its Download Center to users running PCs with XP SP2 installed.

Good, I can update my laptops since that’s all that I use that runs Windows XP. Vista works fine on them but SpeedStep is not functional on my Dell D400 and D800 laptops no matter what settings I change.

@35, DX10 does not work on Windows XP. The hack has a few DX10 DLL files but it does nothing because there are no video drivers that support DX10 for Windows XP. DX10 will never work on Windows XP.

Are you on drugs? XP pro and XP home are identical except pro lets you join to a windows domain and also allows RDP hosting. The size of both once installed is identical. The only way you can tell the difference between the two is to look at the help-about screen for the words ‘Professional’ or ‘Home Edition’. So to correct your statement… Pro is useless for 0% of people!

    For download problems with SP3:
TCPIP.SYS (EventID 4226) has to be re-patched to increase 1/2 open connections. It will be back to 10. No good for torrents. SP2 release, and recent Microsoft security update did it also. EventID 4226 Patch v2.23d worked great: http://www.lvllord.de/download.php?url=en/EvID4226Patch223d-en.zip

@52, LOL You one of the lost lil souls who believe SP3 will bring DX10 to Win XP, however you will be extremely disappointed

Microsoft has already said there will NEVER be DX10 for XP, there is also various websites floating around the web saying why there will never be DX10 on Win XP.

Main reason is that Display system in Vista was totally remodeled and also DX10 was based on this new Display Model.

In order to make DX10 available for XP they would have to re-write the entire DX10 to reroute it back to the original Display Model

    53. Sory mate but this is just because they want us to buy Vista for DX10games - this is not a tech.issue.

But i agree no dx10for XP - tuned up dx9 looks almost the same (see Crysis tunes)

For those who asked about Win XP x64 SP2, if you research a bit more you will find that XP x64 SP2 has been in circulation for sometime now as it is the same as Sever 2003 SP2

Win XP x64 was intended to be used specificly by the manufactoring sector on workstations and is a direct desendant of Win Server 2003 which is why they use the same service pack.
