Microsoft stops HD DVD production for Xbox 360

Microsoft has decided to stop making the HD DVD add-on for its Xbox 360 games console after Toshiba abandoned the high definition DVD format. Toshiba estimated last week that about 300,000 of the add-ons had been sold. Microsoft was one of the key backers for the HD DVD format, competing with Blu-ray, which was the format available in Sony’s rival PlayStation 3 console. Microsoft said it would continue to provide warranty support for the $130 (£115 in the UK) HD DVD add-on.

Last week, Toshiba said it would stop production of HD DVD players and recorders after major film studios decided to back Sony’s Blu-ray format instead. Toshiba said the tipping point came last month when Warner Brothers decided to release its movies only in Blu-ray. The Xbox add-ons sold represented 30% of the one million HD DVD devices that were sold worldwide. That compares unfavourably with the 10.5 million PS3s sold by Sony, which come with a built-in Blu-ray drive.

I think it’s funny, Toshiba has M$ to blame for the demise of the HD-DVD format. If they would have delayed production of the 360 to include the HD-DVD drive built in (like Sony did), the HD format would still be alive and well.

I polietely disagree with rofles (1st post). While PS3 has indeed backed the winning HD format, that isn’t to be confused with the original focus of these machines…. Games.

This is of course open to opinion, but the 360 has had PS3’s number when it comes to their next gen game library’s from Day 1… even if they were launched at the same time, there is simply a stronger game base on the 360…. I’m not saying that everyone who likes PS3 is wrong… but to say that PS3 has “won” is a little pre mature… I wouldn’t buy a console for the HD Player… both units can stream HD Content so it really wouldn’t matter to me…

On a side note, a popular rumor at GDC ‘08 is that the HD DVD player will be dropping to $49.99 USD in March… so if your a collector, you cant beat that price… I wonder if Beta Machines are worth anything these days? :)

Haha. One of the main reasons why Blu-Ray won was because the PS3 had a Blu-Ray player built in. It is no wonder why so many film studios decided to be Blu-Ray exclusive as many homes were Blu-Ray ready because of PS3. Plus all the game discs on PS3 are Blu-Ray discs, which also boosts the format’s market share. So blame the farts at Micro$oft for the collapse of HDDVD. They should have had an Xbox360 with built in HDDVD drive. By the time they realised their mistake it was too late, hence the withdrawal from anouncing a new version of Xbox360 from all press conferences at CES.

its so funny no matter what happened in the hd/blue-ray war , the obvious winner being blue-ray & off course big bucks Bill gee-bag Gates is sure to make a fortune selling br-drives/games at reasonable prices , those who have xboxs have no choice but to buy or risk ur system being out-dated.im just so lucky i bought a ps3 ha…haha..hahaha lol

It’s sad to see Toshibha losing the battle to Sony, whose trojan in house PS3’s did the trick for them.

On a broader point… it’s good to see that customers are now left with one format supported by all providers.

I own a PS3. I sold my xbox 360 quite some time ago. I prefer the game library of the 360 than the one on the PS3, but you guys gotta remember, ps3 has been out for just over a year. The quality of the games will pick up, and then ps3’s true potential will be realized, and far sooner than people think.

Also the modchip should be coming out soon (hopefully) :D

I’ve never written the term “fanboy” before. But now it’s called for.

I own a PS3, well my brother does… and so far i have not been impressed. it’s boring. I could further explain why it’s so boring, but that’s besides the point.

    Bluray vs Hddvd?

who can honestly say they care about either format. They’re both overhyped rubbish.

You’re all on this site because you download DVDrips.

    PS3 vs 360?

Well i don’t own a 360, but i’ve wanted one for a long time now. I’ve played it at my friends house, and was impressed with the range of games, nothing outstanding, (i’m a PC gamer, no fps beats battlefield 2…) but all in all, still alot of fun. diss halo 3 all you like, that game is kick*ss in coop 4 players.

Ps3 on the other hand. Games are all full price, and most of them are updated PS2 games with nothing original. any game that is any good on PS3 is already out on 360.

The point is… Why are you PS3 fanboys pooping your pants in excitement over the demise of HDDVD?

doesn’t make PS3 any better than it is. What it is, is boring.

rofl…. i just feel bad for all those ppl that have capped internet and download speed of >1Mb :D in a couple of months XViD dvdrips will become very unpopular (sort of like VCD now). HD rips will be the new thing and i just cant wait until DVDR gets replaced by 1080p vc1 releases (theyre out there but i dont have burner or dics for them) :D

    February 25th, 2008 | 18:52

    @ 22

you have no idea wtf youre talking about do you??? the ps3 has less games than the 360 because it has been in the market for a lot less and ps3 games are bluray only, whereas most 360 games are dvd9 so the game production cost is bigger. give it time, now that hddvd lost ps3 will become more mainstream :D just like when the 360 came out people liked ps2 more because it didnt overheat and had more games at the time, but look at what happened…

The PS3 has overtaken the XBox 360 in sales per month for the first time in Europe as well as always being ahead in the Far East. Both are great machines and both have some great titles so be happy with the one you have. All this my console is better than yours rubbish is sad and makes you all sound like 14 year olds.

Personally I prefer my PS3 (I also own a 360) but both are great machines.

these are the games I’ve played on both consoles…

    PS3
Tekken 5 resurrection: Great game, I’m a tekken fan.
Turok: terrible, honestly. story, controls, level design, terrible.
Devil May cry: Linear, great controls, SEEN IT ALL BEFORE.
The club: Good controls, Terrible game.
Drake’s Fortune: Best game on the PS3, gets repetitive fast.
Rachet & Clank: PS2 game with higher resolution…

    Xbox 360
Gears of War: Coop and multiplayer… Flawless victory.
Halo 3: 4 Player Coop and multiplayer… Flawless Victory
Dead Rising: Addictive, fun, great game to kill time when alone.
Saints row: Surprisingly well made, a lot of fun.
Fight night round 3: me and the guys are addicted to this game. Not the best, but my favorite of them all.

There are many games i havent played, I own COD4 on PC, so it’s not included.

All in all, nearly all the games i mentioned on 360 are exclusive to 360.

    PS3…

Bluray vs HD? don’t make me giggle.

    @24

I think i’ll throw the line, “you don’t know what you’re talkin about” back to you.

    1. You’re argument is,

“meehhh da ps3 has ownly bween out for a whiley, gwive itt tyime.”

Are you suggesting to me, I leave my PS3 sitting in the dust, and WAIT… for new games to come out?

    2. Listen, you said earlier you don’t have a PS3. And since you’re hating against 360, you obviously don’t have that either.

I play 360 regularly at my friends, and i have PS3.

3.You’re argument is fiction. I own a PS3, what games am i waiting for? you tell me, cuss i don’t know. You don’t know what it’s like to have a console that has just average games. I suggest you buy the PS3, sit and wait for original fun games to come out, and then GET BACK TO ME.

    4. When the PS3 finally comes out it’s shell, Microsoft will have released “XBOX 3″. It’s not far off, give it another year…

  28. Peter Parker
    February 25th, 2008 | 19:48

M$ are NOT going to release a Blu-ray add-on for the 360 because only 3% of all 360 owners actually bought the HD DVD drive.

So any 360 owner who wants to watch future HD films will either have to rent (the small number of films which will be made available) from XBL or buy a standalone Bluy-ray player or a PS3.

Can you stream x264 content to a 360 from a PC? - genuine question not a sarcastic comment.

As for the price of PS3 games, I have several “brand new” games but they have never been full price. Full price being £50 in the UK. You just have to know where to shop and it’s not on the high street.

360 games can be just as expensive, how much is a brand new copy of Gears of War which came out in 2006? At least PS3 games drop in price after being out for over 6 months.

  29. Mr. Boom
    February 25th, 2008 | 20:31

@ 11 - the reason why so many film studios choose blu ray is because sony pictures alone represents more than HALF the films EVER made with MGM and Sony Pictures.

so i don’t believe there is any debate about BD discs being the next generation of high definition movie format for the industry and for the world.

  30. Mr. Boom
    February 25th, 2008 | 20:33

And yes, the fact they have blu ray drives in PS3 is another major factor. even though they are not cost effective, they needed to put in that money.

other than capacity, blu-ray sucks for gaming.
atrocious load times due to 2x read speed on a 25gb disc? makes me SICK. oh wheres the 50gb double layer disc at? like i want to wait an hour for my game to load…
dvd is the best for gaming, and with digital distribution the real future i dont see how blu-ray is that great.

  32. methy
    February 25th, 2008 | 20:40

oh and since blu-ray uses the vc-1 codec WHICH IS OWNED BY MICROSOFT, dont be surprised to see a blu-ray add-on for the 360. otherwise the royalties sony is paying them to use the codec will go through the roooooooof, the roooooof, the roof is on fire.

I’m guessing you meant 360 will disappear off the shelves…

    1. I asked you earlier tell me what games i am waiting for, in regards to PS3. You still haven’t answered me. Forget Blu ray, most people buy consoles for the GAMES, HDDVD and Bluray are simply ADD ONS.

I`ve got both consoles, and the 360 is so much better and specification wise is a superior console, big wow the PS3 got a blue ray dvd player, the quality of the games is the same right now but in a couple years the 360 has the power to produce greater quality gaming experience.

I think i’ll play some Forza2 now…. or maybe some Rallisport 2… I cant stop playing that game :) At least the 360 is somewhat backwards compatible :p

    both are great systems. but there are some ps3 exclusives that are gonna be awesome;

Metal gear solid 4, Final Fantasy 13, Little Big Planet, to just name a few.

Did you forgot that the X360 is PC based (CPU/GPU), and PS3 is half PC based (GPU), while the CPU is something revolutionary, and it can only be found in PS3 and in IBM Blade servers. It’s hard to make software/games that will fully utilize PS3 CPU. So if you’re not a programmer and don’t have knowledge about CPU programming adn it’s utilization, then stop praising X360. Microsoft never gave anything good.
About the games, 360 vs PS3, I told you it’s hard to make software/games on PS3. See, after 8 years of PS2 there is a a lot of difference between 1st gen games and last gen games, that goes for PSOne.
I owned XBOX and X360, and I still own PSOne, PS2, and PS3. Why I remaind with Sony? Well to tell you the truth I’m in the gaming business long before any of the M$ and Sony consoles appeared (Commodore, Spectrum, Atari…..etc.), but when PS appeared I owned/played SegaSaturn and I had that fanboyism stuff against Sony. But now, when I’ve played all of the consoles…….I’ll stick to Sony…..never failed.
So who cares if PS3 games gallery is lesser than X360, games will come out, they won’t suddenly stop producing games.

  45. David Webb
    February 26th, 2008 | 01:57

    @ 38

no i meant the ps3 will disappear off the shelves as in people will buy you shĨthead. btw i dont think you repeating my alias will change anything
so stfu. alot of games have been released for both the 360 and ps3 (assasins creed, call of duty 4, conflict: denied ops, the club, rock band)
but the thing is that the “extra addons”, as you said, will make people buy the ps3. now that only dvd and bluray will be made (and thats what
the ps3 natively supports without an extra drives) people will want to look for ease of use and less clutter, thus choosing the ps3. so if in the
next year the 360 and ps3 have the same games released (they wont but ps3 will become more mainstream as more games will start appearing) the ps3
is going to win the war. its not about the fūcking games so stop asking me to tell you what games will “overthrow” the 360, the technology that
the ps3 has and 360 doesnt will.

    February 26th, 2008 | 02:26

blah blah blah relax people, I have the Wii, PS3 and 360,PS3 isnt bad but 360 is better in gameing terms as for the cpu in the ps3 its just sugar coating even comparisons show an edge to the 360,as mentioned previously here MS can bang on a bd player as an add on, both machines are game consoles, if PS3 is doing so well why sell the PS2 and games for it still??? even the industry looks at this and knows Sony is in some bother with the PS3 and their exclusive games are being developed for 360…it is costing Sony big time, but people shouldnt knock Sony as with any consumer product it can fail and if you shop around as with anything else you can pick it up for a good price so you cant knock Sony for being overpriced, i still have a HiFi system from 92 thats still going strong…what interesting is will BD end up on the scrapheap as they reckon DVD will be around for another decade at least and be surpassed by something new…

  47. Peter Parker
    February 26th, 2008 | 03:06

Games are now being developed on the PS3 and ported to the 360 because it yields much better results. The 1st mainstream multiplatform game to do this (that I know of) is Burnout Paradise. UT3 is the same but there’s no release date for the 360 version yet and now Epic have announced GoW2.

EA and Epic have both stated that the PS3 is the better platform to lead with because it’s much harder to program for whilst programming for the 360 is similar to programming for a PC. Unfortunately RockStar didn’t do this with GTA4.

    @39 TW

You need to do some reading about what’s inside these consoles before typing stupid uninformed replies. The technology in the PS3 is truly advanced (apart form the Nvidia RSX which is a GeForce 7900GT/GTX) but that is still technically better than the 360’s ATI Xenos (which is lower spec X1800).

You can also look forward to more 360 games coming out on multiple discs. There’s already one game spread across 4 and another across 3.

Some excellent features of the PS3: the ability browse it’s hard drive (music, videos, photos), play PS1 games, watch and record live TV from ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD if you have a PSP and a WiFi connection.

    @40 jagtown

The 360 is backwards compatible with 465 Xbox games. The PS3 is backwards compatible with more as it has the PS and PS2 libraries. If you have a US 20GB or 60Gb PS3 then it’s backwards compatible with every PS/PS2 game due to the onboard Emotion Engine chip.

Before anyone tries to correct me on my first comment. I am aware that this argument is regarding HD-DVD, & Blu-ray. Deep down though, it’s really about which console is the better. It’s so typical of people to always feel the need to pick one or the other. The competitive nature of the human spirit will always want to choose one or the other, instead of just enjoying what the future brings into being.

Stop arguing over just a petty topic, it only makes you look foolish

it is sad to see any competition between the 3 main consoles at all, I wouldn’t even call it a console war! here it goes,

Wii - place this fun device with 4 wiimotes near your alcohol supply and wait for the next party and have some interactive drinking games

PS 3 - place this device next to your hdtv to watch some “worth to buy” blu ray movies and get rid of the good ol’ dvd player

xbox 360 - place this device in your room for your personal entertainment cause it is the best gaming machine upgrade for the year and have some serious fragging online with friends

ps 3 the future of gaming? puh leeese, next gen consoles (xbox 3 or wii 2 or ps 4) will probably run games in NAND-ROM format, prolly 20gb portable drives which = larger uncompressed texture sizes, much much faster access times and more content, say good bye to optical drives…….

ps3 is way better than 360 for games and movies despite not having as many titles choose from in the games department the same titles are now coming out for both consoles and the ps3 has its own exclusives.

Also 50% of the ps3s don’t break down like the xbox does lol…

Consoles fail at delivering games in the most playable manner in general. Streaming data from a disc and forcing the users to use thumbsticks to aim and move a cursor about is pure foolishness.
