A "billion" is a thousand million in the United States

140 million copies sold
$100 per copy (conservative)

That's 14 billion dollars revenue.

Me thinks the maths don't add up?

Regards

Why would MS blame piracy for drop in sales after release of Vista? Who in h*ll would want to pirate Vista? This is the biggest laugh I've had all week.

What people don't get is that xp was a real joke... For the kind of networking and the kind of productivity XP was a must. Xp brought so many features for cross office connectivity that 98 never had and Offices really needed or saw fit. Vista never expanded on those features. So with the kind of economy that we are facing what a company doesn't want is spend money where something IS working. XP for most companies is working, so WHY UPGRADE? what new functionality does vista bring that will give a lot more productivity to a company that has already invested money in XP and all its associated software?

If companies REQUIRED a change in hardware I am sure they will choose vista as their native OS because they would require a lot less $ in software to apply group policies or integrate everything into a single package.

Its funny how people blame vista as a bad OS, yet many people like the changes brought to XP sp3 that put it up to par with vista, specially in the networking dept. Which means vista is not a bad OS... its a tad big because people wanted the kind of software (group policies anyone?) and integration out of the box, but there are installs available from vista that only take 700-900mbs of space for a full functioning machine... You want vista to fly on your old PC? use that install and REMOVE AERO.. people always want bells and whistles w/o the hardware to run it.

I dual boot on my laptop and desktop and all the time I end up with vista booting. Vista IS better than XP. it had a lot of driver issues (a lot less than xp though) just like all new OSs. The driver model is better making it more stable, but when you have a lousy OEM like nvida that doesn't make quality drivers people complain, but vista included better drivers for nvidia cards and Raid devices than nvidia themselves. It took them OVER a year to release a stable driver with SLI for nvidia and a driver that didn't park the heads and didn't require 10s for hard disks to spin up upon restart... Blame needs to be shifted and credits need to be attributed.

People that have used vista for a while most of the time will say its a better os than xp ever was. But, with the bad press it has gotten it will always loose... Its just like GM... all they have to do is TRY IT and you will like it.

dsenseb, there's still less software being released for Vista than for XP. 64-bit builds of XP and Vista in particular have serious driver incompatibility problems with older hardware and are largely not supported by the majority of otherwise commonly used programs and utilities. It's not nostalgic old people complaining about the good old days, but pretty much every serious IT expert in the field dismissing Vista as unnecessary, lacking or dysfunctional. It is especially bad when you consider computer gaming, since most games run considerably slower on Vista than they do on XP. I have a DX10-compatible SLI setup and I still see no alternative but to settle with the 64-bit version of XP until the Windows 7 comes out and skip Vista x64 altogether.

i use vista over a year now and i have the same experience as with xp sp2. sometimes problems occur, but that's computers...
it works as good, it looks better, you get some extra options.

you all sound like old people complaining that it was so much better back in the days

btw, for those mac lovers. I had a G5 but sold it after a year cause i also had errors with osx. I sold it after a year. They are good but not that good that it justifies the price.

Most of our clients ask to downgrade to vista.
Problem with most sold notebooks is that aren't really
drivers available for xp. So it's kinda search until
ya find da correct ones. Even i dislike vista too much,
why creatin' an os that take that much space on ya disk.
That ain't worth it. Even if its graphics are sweet i
still set 'm up to classic. Reason i rather wanna use
the memory for my application than for vista.
I love windows XP more than vista cause its not really
compatible with all the applications i need to use for
my work. Even if i multibooted my notebook i have been
on vista only 1 or 2 times in the last year i got it.
I'm workin' more on windows xp or linux but ya don't see
me rushin' to vista for some work.

*a lot* of companies buy new workstations that has vista pre-installed and downgrades it to xp, so they might have sold 140 mil copies because they've stopped selling oem xp licenses but i'd dare to say not even half of those licenses are in use. in fact, with windows 7 closing in, more and more businesses are considering skipping vista completely, it's a new WinME really.

the money made fm selling both Xp and vista OS is just WOW!!!! Even if it's only 500m copies of XP until now, if each copy would cost $10, that would make it $5b. Like I said in my 1st post, it's just to much money... Just cannot understand why they continue to target anti-piracy software... dont they have enough money by now?!
