Microsoft sold 140 million copies of Vista
Microsoft claims that sales of Windows Vista are chugging steadily onward, and have now passed the 140 million mark. But that wasn’t enough to help Microsoft extend its string of lights-out quarterly financial performances. In its fiscal third quarter earnings call Thursday, Microsoft met the Street’s expectations but saw quarterly profit drop 11 percent from the year-ago quarter. However, the results were skewed by Microsoft’s booking of $1.7 billion in deferred revenue from its Express Upgrade to Windows Vista and Microsoft Office Technology Guarantee programs as well as pre-shipments of Vista and Office 2007.
But in a Q&A session after the call, Microsoft CFO Chris Liddell denied that Vista related issues dragged down the Client division’s results, and instead chalked it up to changes in the geographical sales mix and a channel shift toward larger OEMs and away from local and regional system builders. Liddell also beat the anti-piracy drum during the call, claiming that an increase of shipments of unlicensed PCs, particularly in Asia, was partially responsible for a 25 percent drop in OEM revenue during the third quarter. “Piracy is a tough matter, and we will need to continue investing in order to make progress,” he said.

I dont know if i want to be on a comment list for vista. lol
Haha, me to!!!
I’ll Third that
100x more than mac
Haha, me to!!!
So how much did XP sell?
140 million copies.
No wonder Gates wipes his @ss with hundred dollar bills.
doesnt matter how many copies they sell ppl will still revert back to xp when they discover how much it blows. XP SP3 is the best. SP2 fubar’d my comp, but with sp3 it is flying like aladdin on his magic carpet.
@1 4′th on that
You people that say “you will back to XP in no time” are morons. what are you going to do when Microsoft drops support for XP? Out in the water with hackers and viruses and no Microsoft to protect you? Don’t say that Norton, or Comodo, or Avast will do all the protecting, because they won’t. They will move with the market trend, which will be to drop support for XP and support Vista.
We at Apple Computers running Windows Vista on our machines and we love it.
I’ve even installed Windows Vista SP1 on my iPhone. After install iPhone discovered built-in GPS receiver and camera suddenly bacame 15 megapixels, memory went up to 32GB. Wonderful. Thank you, Bill.
Vista = ME 2nd Edition.
I believe Chinese Pirates sold 140 million copies of Vista
I work at a computer store and since Vista came out we only sold 2 or 3 copies (to companies).
But we sell about 10 OEM’s a day bundled with laptops, and half of them are downgraded to XP.
Our distributors say that people are asking to upgrade from OSX to Vista when buying new Apple computers for every 2nd machine they buy.
Your computer has unexpectedly shut down..
Microsoft Windows Vista is checking for a resolution to this problem…

…zip!
….we’ll …err…get back to you on that!
@12
Damn straight man… aint nobody wanna stick with another ME the 2nd piece of turd…
XP SP3 gives me all the speed boosts and shiznit that Vista never will…
And you wonder why corporation and companies haven’t made the switch yet? Easy, they recognise the POS that Vista is and don’t wanna clog up their PCs with the sewage…
XP still works, skip Vista and by the time MS stops support XP Windows seven will be released
xp = bloatware
vista = extreme bloatware
xp > vista
lol, proud owner of a pirated vista
Windows Seven will be top notch, cleanest 25MB installer
I think most of the Vista “sales” are due to oem versions being preinstalled on laptops/desktops. Then again, some are downgrading to XP as mentioned on a recent BBC News story. The figures still add to the number of Vista sales though.
Windows 7 will be more complex and bloated than ever, I don’t think Microsoft have ever made a good OS, XP was rubbish too, my pirated Vista with SP1 is actually more stable and faster than XP was after its first year. Linux is the way to go.
I think my next puter will be a mac. I’m getting weary of spending more time on my system than on my apps.
Asta la Vista baby!
I downgraded to XP-SP3 and I noticed a speed reduction. I’m only using XP ’cause Vista-SP1 is too big. Look at that “winsxs” folder!!!
just for the fun of it… avg cost of vista is around what?! $250-300….??!!! multiply that for the 140m copies sold = too much money for one person only….
one thing I would like to know, how much in advertising did M$ spend? anyone knows…????
Microsoft announced that it has sold 210 million copies of Windows XP at the Windows Hardware Engineering Conference in 2004. I heard it was more than 400 million copies in 2006, so it’s got to be at least 500,000,000 copies as of now. Personally, I’m guessing it’s more than that, around 550 to 700 millions, but I haven’t seen any actual numbers to support that estimate.
@ “my pirated Vista with SP1 is actually more stable and faster than XP was after its first year.”
Could it be that you acquired some computer/Windows experience in that 5-year difference between the releases? Hhmm? Vista was a joke when it came out. Just read some of its reviews from 2006.
Xp and Vista the same thing. Only diferece, Xp came out earlier ,and MS had time to “clean” it a litle.
Its all about marketing: releasing more OS in the shortest time posible, making us to buy, buy and buy. And beleve me, they have their methods to make us upgrade.
the money made fm selling both Xp and vista OS is just WOW!!!! Even if it’s only 500m copies of XP until now, if each copy would cost $10, that would make it $5b. Like I said in my 1st post, it’s just to much money… Just cannot understand why they continue to target anti-piracy software… dont they have enough money by now?!
*a lot* of companies buy new workstations that has vista pre-installed and downgrades it to xp, so they might have sold 140 mil copies because they’ve stopped selling oem xp licenses but i’d dare to say not even half of those licenses are in use. in fact, with windows 7 closing in, more and more businesses are considering skipping vista completely, it’s a new WinME really.
its a joke that M$ still counts a sale of vista when someone “downgrades” to XP…
Most of our clients ask to downgrade to vista.
Problem with most sold notebooks is that aren’t really
drivers available for xp. So it’s kinda search until
ya find da correct ones. Even i dislike vista too much,
why creatin’ an os that take that much space on ya disk.
That ain’t worth it. Even if its graphics are sweet i
still set ‘m up to classic. Reason i rather wanna use
the memory for my application than for vista.
I love windows XP more than vista cause its not really
compatible with all the applications i need to use for
my work. Even if i multibooted my notebook i have been
on vista only 1 or 2 times in the last year i got it.
I’m workin’ more on windows xp or linux but ya don’t see
me rushin’ to vista for some work.
These 140 millions are counting with the poor blokes who had to eat Vista OEM OS with their new computer.
i use vista over a year now and i have the same experience as with xp sp2. sometimes problems occur, but that’s computers…
it works as good, it looks better, you get some extra options.
you all sound like old people complaining that it was so much better back in the days
btw, for those mac lovers. I had a G5 but sold it after a year cause i also had errors with osx. I sold it after a year. They are good but not that good that it justifies the price.
EPIC FAIL!
Why?

Microsoft Windows XP Professional Corporate SP3 Integrated-ETH0
is Out !
dsenseb, there’s still less software being released for Vista than for XP. 64-bit builds of XP and Vista in particular have serious driver incompatibility problems with older hardware and are largely not supported by the majority of otherwise commonly used programs and utilities. It’s not nostalgic old people complaining about the good old days, but pretty much every serious IT expert in the field dismissing Vista as unnecessary, lacking or dysfunctional. It is especially bad when you consider computer gaming, since most games run considerably slower on Vista than they do on XP. I have a DX10-compatible SLI setup and I still see no alternative but to settle with the 64-bit version of XP until the Windows 7 comes out and skip Vista x64 altogether.
What people don’t get is that xp was a real joke… For the kind of networking and the kind of productivity XP was a must. Xp brought so many features for cross office connectivity that 98 never had and Offices really needed or saw fit. Vista never expanded on those features. So with the kind of economy that we are facing what a company doesn’t want is spend money where something IS working. XP for most companies is working, so WHY UPGRADE? what new functionality does vista bring that will give a lot more productivity to a company that has already invested money in XP and all its associated software?
If companies REQUIRED a change in hardware I am sure they will choose vista as their native OS because they would require a lot less $ in software to apply group policies or integrate everything into a single package.
Its funny how people blame vista as a bad OS, yet many people like the changes brought to XP sp3 that put it up to par with vista, specially in the networking dept. Which means vista is not a bad OS… its a tad big because people wanted the kind of software (group policies anyone?) and integration out of the box, but there are installs available from vista that only take 700-900mbs of space for a full functioning machine… You want vista to fly on your old PC? use that install and REMOVE AERO.. people always want bells and whistles w/o the hardware to run it.
I dual boot on my laptop and desktop and all the time I end up with vista booting. Vista IS better than XP. it had a lot of driver issues (a lot less than xp though) just like all new OSs. The driver model is better making it more stable, but when you have a lousy OEM like nvida that doesn’t make quality drivers people complain, but vista included better drivers for nvidia cards and Raid devices than nvidia themselves. It took them OVER a year to release a stable driver with SLI for nvidia and a driver that didn’t park the heads and didn’t require 10s for hard disks to spin up upon restart… Blame needs to be shifted and credits need to be attributed.
People that have used vista for a while most of the time will say its a better os than xp ever was. But, with the bad press it has gotten it will always loose… Its just like GM… all they have to do is TRY IT and you will like it.
Why would MS blame piracy for drop in sales after release of Vista? Who in h*ll would want to pirate Vista? This is the biggest laugh I’ve had all week.
Thats 140 million copys to people that did not know they had the option of still getting XP
A “billion” is a thousand million in the United States
140 million copies sold
$100 per copy (conservative)
That’s 14 billion dollars revenue.
Me thinks the maths don’t add up?
Regards
Peter Gillespie
im now on vista 64 bit home prem with a new computer amd2 5600 yes i did say i wasnt going to get vista but i must admit its growing on me.
