Microsoft signed a PC search deal with HP

Ramping up its efforts to build search market share, Microsoft signed a deal to embed a Live Search toolbar on all Hewlett-Packard consumer PCs in North America starting next year. In addition, Live Search will be the default search engine on browsers on the computers, the companies said. Both features will be included in HP PCs in January 2009. While the deal could boost use of Microsoft’s search platform, it could also boost support of Silverlight, Microsoft’s new browser plug-in and development runtime for adding multimedia to Web applications. That’s because the Live Search toolbar will be built using Silverlight, meaning that the browser plug-in, which is required to view multimedia content built with the tool, will come with the computers.

Microsoft is concurrently trying to improve the distribution of Silverlight by building some of its own Web pages with the technology and requiring visitors to download the browser plug-in to view the Web pages. The toolbar will also include buttons that HP will be able to customize to direct computer users to Web sites such as Snapfish, HP’s online photo-sharing and printing service, and HP customer service. Microsoft called the agreement the most significant distribution deal for Live Search that the company has done. HP is the world’s largest PC manufacturer, the companies said. They did not mention whether the agreement might be extended outside of North America. I’ve had the honor to work with few completely new computers from HP and they are a total mess, swamped by tons of completely useless applications, significantly slowing down the whole PC. Too bad there will be another one…

Live Search is just cr*p. The first two pages of any search is commercial BS… I hate it. Google has the decency to color their ads, and separate them from the rest of the results.

Awww poor, poor lil HP, hope they know what they’re getting themselves into. Those that lay with the Devil tend to get burned.

    Thanks MicroIdiots,

Instead of improving live search so people want to use it, they waste money trying to shove garbage down users throats. It looks like Paul will be fired soon. Face it his products like vista and Server 2008 is not about what users want, it is about what the least we can do and the most we can charge for.

I am glad Indian development working out well for MS.

Live messenger kicks ass, after full Apatch ofc :) Live search does seperate sponsored ads from actual material. If outlook of the site wouldnt be so lame and google wouldnt work so well, I would use it…

These are the tactics I can’t stand about MS. The m/billions of people using google use it because its a good product. So instead of trying to make a better product MS tries to buy Yahoo and force their products on consumers, just like IE. Then they would brag about how many copies of the software they sold, just like Vista(by counting OEM licenses). Pathetic really. I would love to see Balmer have a stroke right on stage during one of his crack induced tirades screaming how great Live Search is.

Your obviously schooled in the tradition of the notion that objectivity is possible and the best.
News should be subjective on a micro-level. Which makes this a good example of good amateur journalism.

HP rockz with Linux on board!

1)buy HP (with no disks, if possible)
2)put v*sta (pronounced sh*sta) disk down the shredder!
    3)install any Linux flavor!
    4)also shred all nukersoft hardware!
    5)enjoy!

P.S. Anything nukersoft can do, Linux can do differently!

    @13 DonkeyFleas

That is exactly what I’m thinking. And that HP agreed to it! A shame! Man this just pisses me off. M$ just doesn’t seem to realize the people don’t want their crap on their systems!

They tested the Desktop Search toolbar by us at work. I used it ones, then got rid of it. The biggest piece of crap I’ve ever seen!! Probably the least intuitive search software I’ve ever seen

Don’t they have a complaint website where we can mass attack them on with thousands of negative comments at the same time? :-P that sounds like fun

Anyways, it’s only a matter of time. More and more people are getting “computer-smart” and once they do, they’ll see that M$ is useless and will avoid working with their software where possible

I never realy considered this to be a factual news site, just more of a blog realy, which is of course ppls opinions. If i wanted the hard facts i will look into other news sites related to posted article (stated source in this case “Source: PC World”). This is a release site & thus i appreciate hearing peoples opinions on realeases & news, including the opinion of the article poster.

That said, i totaly agree that personal opinions & comments should be clearly seperated from the news article. Not doing so can be very misleading.

I own a HP laptop and I love it!
But I am shocked now, why the hell on earth HP needs to go hand in hand with that Super Crap Microsoft ? It will just ruin HP’s image! If I get one of those laptops, the first thing I would do is knock the ‘Live Search’ (dead search rather) out of the system. As I am not habituated to non-MS OS, I will use windows for the time being. But soon I will knock that out too with Mac or Linux.

HP!!! OH MY DEAR!!! OPEN THY EYES.

    Don’t you guys get it?

The message is pretty clear, by now you all still complain like little new born babies.

Microsoft does not give a f00k about what you guys think.
They do what they do for legit users, they don’t take recommendations from people who go around and pirate their sheet, they are trying to think outside the box now, what other company is doing that?

And don’t even go flaming “ohh, goog, google, googy goog” because Google doesn’t sell their own Operating System for desktop or laptop computers, they are still working on one for phones!

Both companies have flaws, they cannot be compared, MS only wants to try to win the internet tools market. But, Google has had it since the beginning. If anyone should be worried it’s Google.

// and fyi, I love google, their tools are great. But, when MS starts coming out with new tools for online users, I will have to try them out. I already like one called “Microsoft Live SkyDrive”. The closest Google has come to that would be “Google Docs”. Either way, they are both great companies.

This last comment is for all of you Windows Flamers.

April 2008 8.8% of online web developers prefer Windows Vista!
April 2008 3.7% of web developers prefer linux!

    @vorhees

I would hardly worry about wasting your breath on the forums here defending Microsoft. Linux fanboys are communists that believe all software should be free and any company that makes money should be despised and hated. Please don’t rain on their parade. Complaining about Microsoft is the only glimmer of enjoyment they get after driving around town in the Geek Squad buggy, setting up wirless routers.

Capitalism is a grand adventure that only the smart and innovative succeed at. Complaining about Microsoft is just a mark of someone who has failed in that adventure.

PS – Most enterprise-level firewalls use some proprietary form of Linux. These companies take open-source, alter it to their needs and resell it with hardware for a profit.

    LOL…

Just throwing some more fuel on it all!

Seems, I have started a fire, but here go’s!

    1) U.S. Army likes Linux!
    2) Dell likes Linux!
    3) HP likes Linux!
    4) Asus likes Linux!
    5) Several Govt and Police facilities world wide like Linux!
    6) Even nukersoft has at 1 point or another needed or borrowed parts of Linux!
    7) But, in all fairness, it seems nukersoft feels Linux in part or whole is worth $20 million bucks for only 1 flavor!!!
    8) Let’s not forget Firefox!
    9) Some European communities just refuse to use inferior products!
    10) THIS IS NOT A PERSONAL ATTACK ON NUKERSOFT…but, If my dog gained 4000 pounds and bite or/and gave everyone flea’s that touched her…well, I think everyone would hate her too!

    1) I have tossed more hardware out the door due to O.S.(3.1, 98, me, 2000, xp, v*sta) changes with nukersoft than with Linux, period! (printers, cams, trackball, etc)
    2) If lower blood pressure, less cussing, less costly hardware requirements, $0.00 for Linux…$500.00 for v*sta, my time spent searching/downloading great moviez/softz/tunez vs. reprogramming or installing a truckload of softz to complete the O.S.s capabilities, lol…yes the time to write blotted commentz like this to annoy nukersoft fanboys….then You bet, I’m now an official LINUX FANBOY…dang, this little LINUX O.S. of mine ROCKZ!!!

P.S. Whichever O.S. You choose, the web would be boring without this site…THANKZ RLSLOG’z, YOU FOLKS ROCK!!!

Why don’t people here (that are uber haxor), just BUIL THEIR OWN COMPUTER! Buy all the bits yourself and put it together! It will save you $100’s and you’ll get kick ass ‘brand name’ parts instead of generic crap and OEM branding on everything. Then overclock it till it’s even better than what it was before!

US$1500 will get you a friggen sweet machine and you’ll have to pay US$2000 for something half as good full of sh!tware.

Geez, do the research and save loads, that why you come here isn’t it? Get free movies, apps and music? I could build any PC with my eyes closed, it’s piss!
