Microsoft sends Win XP S3 out to manufacturers

Microsoft has started shipping the first versions of Windows XP Service Pack 3 to PC manufacturers. Current XP users can expect to see the service pack become available for download on 29 April. Windows XP SP3 contains minor performance and stability enhancements, in addition to a cumulative security update. It is the first service pack to be released for Windows XP since SP2 in 2004. The pack will also contain updates which will make it easier for network administrators to manage SP3 machines alongside Windows Vista PCs. SP3 is expected to be the last major update for Windows XP. Microsoft will stop offering the operating system to manufacturers on 30 June, but will still allow vendors to sell the operating system on ” ultra-low cost” PCs.

Windows XP SP3 also steals a page from Vista’s product activation model, meaning that product keys for each copy of the operating system don’t need to be entered during setup. The feature should prove popular with corporate IT managers, who often need to oversee hundreds, or even thousands, of operating system installations. Windows XP SP3 will be available through Microsoft’s Windows Update tool or the Microsoft Download Center website. Automatic distribution of the patch will begin later this summer through Automatic Update.

and the genius windows criticisms begin… do me a favour and how about if you’re going to criticise windows then use some evidence rather than the generic windows sucks (as it’s the most popular!) and if you do feel like criticising it, tell us what OS system you’ve switched to as a result? Unless you’re one of the smartarses who installs billionz of registry editing programs, start up boost programs, turns off all the services, installs a theme that rapes the system resources, use norton etc….

    Personally I love Windows XP.

p.s. i got the wordpress you are posting comments too quickly also and I don’t think i’ve posted a comment since the server transfer

@8 There will be no x64 Edition SP3. They have already announced that ages ago.

Service Pack for x64 is linked with the Windows Server Service Pack, x64 version isn’t linked with Windows XP x86. A service pack for windows server wasn’t released too long ago also.

that is why there will be NO x64 SP3

Let’s see what I would want from an OS.

    It loads quickly. (no.)
Shows time and date somewhere. (time only)
Does not use much resources so the computer stays silent. (no)

Wonder how these issues been perfected now..

However, linux is not much better so maybe I will take the time to install sp3. Probably will even take the keyloggers away for a day by doing a fresh install of xp.

  21. thom
    April 22nd, 2008 | 15:39

My XP loads quickly, perhaps you have too much running in the background or not enough memory or you’re overrunning your memory. To criticise an OS because it doesn’t show the date all the time is the most ridiculous thing I’ve heard and personal taste – I wouldn’t want the date but you can have it anyway, perhaps do some research before speaking ill of it
    http://www.xp-tips.com/display-date.html
If you don’t want the taskbar that big then search google and I’m fairly certain I just saw a plug-in.

And, I could easily just argue that’s no XPs fault. Install XP and up date it with pure Windows and Microsoft programs and it will run fast – XP hardly requires any memory (compared to Vista and most new games and software today) as well. Have you never wondered why people format their Windows fairly regularly? Because over time as you install and uninstall programs they leave their mark but will never bring XP to a standstill (unless you messed with XP so much) and it’s like having a fresh version.

It’s pretty much the same when it comes to buying anything be it a mobile, a guitar or even clothes – as you use it overtime it won’t be as good as when you bought it unless you really maintain it, which I for one don’t I like to play around and tweak things.

the thing with microsoft OS that its simply not easily customizable and user friendly in that area. things like changing the “start” button, getting rid of msn, not wanting stupid “my documents/music/pictures folders etc.. try explain how to do all that to the average joe.

just to have my OS, that btw. i have paid for and have to use everyday, run the way I want it to run i have to spend hours researching, tweaking etc. now imagine how someone who doesn’t know much about pcs feels when they are greated by BSOD, random crashes, viruses, spywares etc.

the Winblows OS there is a 50/50 shot I will have to call India
to get the thing activated…. So yes tom I did switch to the best OS out right now OSX and i do play here and there with Linux….I do have to have Winblows for the very few apps i still use Dvdfab,Acid,Vegas Ect but if these companies get off the butts and port them to OSX then I would be 100% Winblows free…. enough with service packs Microsoft needs to release an OS that works… no activation .. less viruses .. I have given enough time and money to the greedy giant !

Lol its funny how the newest OSX has more reported bugs than vista…. >.>

You do know why windows has alot more viruses than macs and linux right? If Mac OSX held the same amount of the market as Windows then im sure hackers would start to concentrate on making viruses for macs too. Back to the simple statement of “why blow up a building with 1 person in it where as you can blow up a building with 100 people in it?”

Thats how hackers work, they try to target for maximum impact. And if you think you are safe on OSX… just you wait for it to be more popular then you will be going “oh damn why we virus ridden now!?!?!?!?”

There is reasons why companies are starting to make Antivirus Programs for mac OSX because mac will not hold that reign for very long, and it appears it will be lost soon… (well has been lost in the past actually, there has been viruses and worms for macs before….)

Mac IS A GREEDY GIANT, believe it or not…. If you compare the specs on their machines….. to just PC machines with the same specs, they charge you about 30% more just for the MAC brand name.

Funny ppl going to flame me about this statement… however MACS ARE JUST PCS!!!!! they lost their title of Macs being Macs when they abandoned their own processor and moved to Intel.

Haha if you have alittle know how and use google, you can make your own mac pc with osx on it, for so much cheaper than to get a real Mac >.> (Macs use a special chip on their motherboards to authenticate OSX with, however people have removed that protection and allow it to run on any hardware now)

Therefore although macs ain’t greedy giant on their software side however they make it up on their hardware side!

Funny though, i have a friend who used to be a mac fanboy…. however recently he changed over to Windows…. and he is loving it. He does alot of multimedia work… and he has noticed that Windows Versions of the multimedia software he uses runs faster on Windows now than on OSX. Every time i tease him about it… he is like “mac used to be good until they decided to go to intel”.

Windows XP Service Pack 3 Released to Manufacturing

Today we are happy to announce that Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) has released to manufacturing (RTM). Windows XP SP3 bits are now working their way through our manufacturing channels to be available to OEM and Enterprise customers.
We are also in the final stages of preparing for release to the web (i.e. you!) on April 29th, via Windows Update and the Microsoft Download Center. Online documentation for Windows XP SP3, such as Microsoft Knowledge Base articles and the Microsoft TechNet Windows XP TechCenter, will be updated then. For customers who use Windows XP at home, Windows XP SP3 Automatic Update distribution for users at home will begin in early summer.
Thanks to everyone here who installed the public betas Γ?? you not only gave us detailed feedback but also helped each other out with timely troubleshooting. Through the beta program we found several important issues and were able to confirm some essential fixes. We couldnΓ??t have done this without you.
We will still be monitoring this forum during the next few weeks in case you have more feedback about the release of Windows XP SP3.
On behalf of myself, Shashank Bansal and Windows Serviceability, many thanks.

you have to wait until they release the localized version for ur language :( . that means if you install it now, you’ll see little question marks and funny characters everywhere.

Also on a side note, i’ve downloaded and installed the file directly from MS and its not build 5512, instead its 3311. So thats a heads up. dont download the one from MS :) .
