Microsoft reduced the price of XboX 360

Microsoft just decided to follow Sony’s example and save some consumer’s money on this next-gen console: Making an appearance at the annual Comic-Con International 2007 event in San Diego, Calif. on Thursday, Microsoft announced a 10 percent price reduction for its Xbox 360 HD DVD Player, from $199 to $179 starting Aug. 1, 2007. The add-on accessory enables Xbox 360 video game console users to watch HD DVD movies. While Sony’s PlayStation 3 console sports a Blu-ray Disc player, but it runs considerably more expensive than the Xbox 360, which features only a standard definition DVD player. Microsoft’s Xbox 360 HD DVD Player enables Xbox 360 users to watch video content stored on the HD DVD format, a new high definition optical disc format that is rivaling Blu-ray Disc for market dominance.

The $20 price drop continues to enable the Xbox 360 HD DVD Player to be the most affordable way to enjoy high definition films, according to Microsoft vice president Jeff Bell. “From the beginning, we set out to offer Xbox 360 owners an unrivaled high-definition experience, with a choice of optical discs on the HD DVD format and digital downloads through Xbox LIVE Marketplace,” said Bell. Microsoft also announced the forthcoming available of a high definition version of the movie “300” coming to Xbox Live Marketplace on Aug. 14, and the pending availability of the pilot program for Heroes: Season 1 in HD. Money talk, we all know it.

The problem with HD-DVD is a lack of availability.

I imagine in the states it may be a totally different ball game, but here in Perth, Western Australia I could probably spend all day looking around for a HD-DVD player and not find one. Let alone any of the movies. Compared to the exposure that Bluray seems to be getting, and HD-DVD doesn’t stand a chance.

As much as sales for the PS3 are sucking pretty badly, Sony does seem to be winning the format war with it.

    @Mugi
Check the latest update from XBox Live, Microsoft fixed the problems with Dolby 5.1 and DTS on HD-DVD’s. The audio on HD-DVD’s is now a hundred times better!

Same here in Europe, HD-DVD is virtually non-existent, Blu-Ray is widely available, although expensive.

Friends of mine (who had an Xbox with Media Center) just bought a PS3 for the combination of games/blue ray player. They have not looked back since.

  9. July 27th, 2007 | 13:33

Why would anyone waste their money on a dead format? Just give up Microsoft

@Albert: I’m refering to the sound the system makes, around 40-50db you DO NOT want to hear that sound while watching movies as it’s annoying like nothing else.

Good! i really want HD-DVD to win this format war… it would be a good thing for us pirates, Blueray would fuck us over, what with the extra disc costs and protection.
Blueray sucks compared to HD-DVD quality… and just look at sonys other formats, betamax, minidisc, umd, LOL

What a lame comment. First of all, what fucking games? PS3 has fuck all games worth buying. Secondly, who needs optical formats when you can simply stream movies from your PC to your HDTV. At the end of the day this is where we will end up. No need for production costs, just pay your money and stream your movie/tv show. Fucking PS3 fanboy cunt.

Hey nonamo, tell Microsoft to actually stock up the shops with some of these HD-DVD players then. It being the superior format doesn’t do us all much good if the freakin’ thing’s not available anywhere.

I can’t speak for the quality of each format, or anything like that, but when all I see out there as far as the next generation format goes is Bluray, I start thinking nobody backing HD-DVD really gives a damn whether it wins or not.

“PS3 has fuck all games worth buying”

As opposed to the wide selection of great games available on the other platforms?

While I’m no PS3 fanboy, the Wii is lacking great games and the 360 continues to fail at alarming rates.

You’re right about one thing though. The PC is where it’s at.

I would love to read these articles without the fan boy’s flooding the screen, I am still trying to decide which platform to buy but can’t make the decision.

    11,634,300 Xbox 360’s sold,
9,130,709 Wii’s sold, and we cant forget the
    3,877,792 PS3’s sold.
Well gee it sure looks like the PS3 is wining doesn’t it. LOL The wii is out selling the ps3 4 to one also and the 360 is seeling 2 to 1. So check again before you talk crap fanboy. By the way I have a wii and a 360 myself. I want HD-Dvd to win Sonys formats suck it lost in the vhs/beta war years ago and now they are trying again. Losers

For those not in the know, the 360’s are junk in any case, so accessories are sort of a moot point- the percentage of consoles failing is staggering. If you do not own a 360,I highly recommend reading about the console failures via google or somesuch before considering buying one.I’ve personally been through it with the 360,which microsoft replaced twice in the first 60 days due to hardware failure-
and of course it’s currently down. 3 times since March and this isn’t even an uncommon situation.

hd-dvd will not win the format war you moron
Sony and Toshiba help each other. they are not at war or something. there solution was to come up with combo devices and they have
p.s. sony owns paramount and more companies so you’ll see more shit on blu-ray than hd-dvd

Really, at this point only stupid people(yeah, must be really really dumb) would buy a HDDVD player.

Enjoy your 33% failure rate “white box full of sub par components” with your “soon to be dead” HDDVD player LOL

Man.. am I the only one here who is a fanboy… I like games period who gives a crap about what system does what.. the main purpose of a console is games.. has everyone forgotten that? HD DVD- BluRay mean nothing to a console if the games suck.. which usually ends with the console failing. Besides that kinda stuff is better off in a pc anyways.

it depends if you like first person shooters get a xbox 360
if you like a variety of all kinds of games get a ps3
if you like kids games get a wii.
also if you are into watching high def movies get a ps3 because you can watch the blu-ray discs and if there is only a hd movie on hd-dvd disc you can download it and put it in the hard drive
and also you can load games in the hdd also is very easy to upgrade a ps3 hard drive and attach a removable usb drive also
    you get free online play.
shit now that i think about it just get a ps3

also think in 5 to 10 years ps3 games can be improved with a 50GB storage cap on the discs whereas an xbox 360 cant improve because the disc caps at 9.5GB

also i bet if you wait 2-3 years they will have a new redesigned 360 with built in hd-dvd reader and will be able to play all the 360 games plus they will make new games on hd-dvd discs. witch a regular 360 cant play so you will be screwed with an old 360 in a couple of years (xbox 720) in the making now

    Wii 2

The successor to Nintendo’s Wii is commonly called “Wii 2″ and “Super Wii.” Shigeru Miyamoto mentioned at E3 2006 that the successor to the Wii would include high-definition capabilities.[2]

    Xbox 720

The successor to Microsoft’s Xbox 360 is commonly called “Xbox 3″ or “Xbox 720.” Although their chief concern at this time is to lower the cost of the Xbox 360 and had not started on the Xbox 720’s development as of November 2006,[3] Peter Moore has supposedly told EGM that the next Xbox console would be released between 2011 and 2012.[8] Microsoft EMEA veep Chris Lewis said in October of 2006 that work had already begone on the 720, however he did not say just how far that work had gone.[9] It has been speculated that the Xbox 720 will include a camera capable of tracking the movement of its users and not just the controller.[10] Microsoft has confirmed they are going to begin developing and producing their own computer chips which will probably be present in the 720. The research will be done by two groups, one in Redmond, Wash. and one in Silicon Valley. The man heading the Silicon Valley research team says that it is probable that voice interactive technology would be incorporated into the next Xbox console.[11]

    PlayStation 4

Sony has stated that there will definitely be a PlayStation 4.[4] At this point they are the only company to announce that they will be involved in the eighth generation. Nevertheless, no information or theories have yet surfaced concerning what Sony will do with the PS4; however, they have stated that it will be released after 2010. Sony says they are planning for the PS3 to have a life span of about ten years, meaning they will discontinue support for that system in or around 2016. However, as Sony believes there is room for “significant overlap” it is probable that the PlayStation 4 will be released well before that, possibly 2011 according to one site.[12] In an interview with Sony’s president of worldwide studios, Chuck Norris says he considers it highly unlikely the PS4 will utilize disks, instead you will download all your games directly to the console.[13][14]
