Microsoft plans to buy Logitech?

Shares in Swiss-based computer peripherals maker Logitech International SA rose as much as 12 percent on Thursday based on speculation Microsoft Corp would launch a takeover bid, traders said. Analysts dismissed rumors of an $8 billion takeover bid as unlikely and Logitech board member Daniel Borel, the company’s largest shareholder, said he had no reason to sell his 6 percent stake. He declined to comment on the speculation. Such a deal would be Microsoft’s biggest ever and while the world’s largest software maker has recently shown a willingness to do bigger deals, it has focused most of its acquisitions on higher-margin Web and business software.

“I am a co-founder of Logitech. Would you be willing to sell your child?” Borel told Reuters in an interview. “I have no reason to sell. But I will not be the one to decide. I own only some 6 percent so I will neither enable nor prevent a sale of Logitech.” Traders said rumors circulated that Logitech, with a market capitalization of about 7 billion Swiss francs ($6.3 billion), would receive a takeover bid at 48 francs per share from Microsoft. A Logitech spokesman declined to comment. Microsoft said it does not comment on rumor or speculation. A Logitech takeover would make the software leader the world’s largest maker of computer mice and other peripheral devices as well. I love both Logitech and Microsoft hardware, they are simply the best. And this is how it always begins, spokesman refusing to comment on rumour. I smell the deal in the air.

before the microsoft haters start talking about microsoft wasting the good products of logitech because of its problems with viruses infecting windows and all this other crap: the only reason this happens is because the OS is more popular, has better driver support, and is used by more advanced users. so if linux or mac os would become more popular crackers would soon start trying to infect those computers with viruses instead of windows. so stfu u n00bs that still use linux

It has a market cap of just over 6b and the rumors are that MS is going to offer 8b? Logitech would be stupid to take that deal. The market cap is its current value. Companies are purchased based on their future value, not their current value.

If Logitech takes that deal, it will be the dumbest business move since Intermix Media sold MySpace for a mere $500m.

there you go again, another kid with no facts. there are lot of drivers for linux, and if you dont find a driver suplied by the producer. Gues what! theres a non-official driver for practicly everything and most of the time they even work better than the official ones.

and off to my comment. Please people dont rant about the OS on this topic. the fact is( statistical and real fact) that Logitech and provide more value for your money with theyr products and a better longevity. plus they are way ahead in technology than /\/\$ (Good example is the G9 with its 3200 dpi technology while MS has whimsical stuff compared to that) also thy seem to offer more flexibility. Do you get keybs that can hold 54 textline commands as precoded macros? no you dont. do you get mice with all buttons customizable? no you dont. final conclusion. MS offers normal stuff for a lil bit above average price, where logitech offers more for a lil bit more.

BOTH ARE GOOD IN A WAY, but Logitech is just the thing for Pro’s ;)

therefore. we as consumers prolly find no need for high priced MS mediocre stuff.

Well I have a Microsoft Keyboard+Mouse, and i just customised my left button to make you kiss my ass, and my right button to tell you to chill out on writing a novel on releaselog.

    I also like logitech.

    I hope this isn’t true.

While Microsoft technically does make good products, I don’t care much for their design sense. Logitech has been pumping out gorgeous peripherals for a long time now, and I have a sneaking suspicion that their unique look may be tossed aside in favor of MS’ own designs if they’re acquired.

I would hate to see this come true, as my MS IntelliMouse Explorer 4 just recently started acting up. (Lousy quality, like most MS-hardware. *NEVER* again!) So I got myself a Logitech MX518, which is _far_ superior and feels a lot more solid, for about the same price…

As MS and Logitech are the biggest mouse and keyboard manufacturers one can only hope the EU would stop this acquisition.

Every peripheral I’ve bought in the last few years has been logitech, not had any problems with any of it. when I’ve been looking logitech products always have the best in class reviews, and Microsoft always have something similar but in a 20% more price range (not including speakers) Does this mean anything other than Logitech prices go up to make the Microsoft branded crap look better?
