Microsoft officially released Windows 7 beta
The first public trial, or beta, version of Windows 7 has been released. Microsoft boss Steve Ballmer used his keynote speech at CES to announce that software developers would get at the trial version on 7 January. On 9 January members of the public will get the chance to download the successor to Windows for themselves. Mr Ballmer said Windows 7 would be the pivot of a broader Microsoft push to improve the way its separate software and service families work together. In delivering the opening keynote, Mr Ballmer has taken over from Bill Gates – who in 2008 bowed out of day-to-day involvement with the company he founded. In a nod to the chilly economic climate, Mr Ballmer said: “We face some really big challenges. We are all feeling it and its impact will likely be with us for some time.”
But, he said, the global economic slowdown would not hobble the pace of technological change. “I believe our digital lives will only continue to get richer,” said Mr Ballmer. “There’s no turning back from the connected world.” The newest version of the Windows operating system would, he said, be the “linchpin” of an effort to make it easier for customers to do more with the different Microsoft gadgets and services they use. Microsoft is expected to cap the number of copies of the beta version of Windows 7 available to the public. The minimum requirements for running Windows 7 are a PC with a 1 Ghz processor, 1GB of RAM, 16 GB of disk space, 128MB of video memory and support for DX9 graphics. Some of the Windows 7’s features help it work with other devices. A “home group” system makes it straightforward to enrol PCs, Xbox consoles, media servers and other gadgets into a local network that can share media and content.

That's nice and all but what about Vista?
And who's to say they won't abandon this OS again when it fails to sell (like Vista did).
minimum 1 gb RAM ? ..im running it on a pentium 3 with 512 mb RAM..
so that is why the x64 version is out now, because its finally officially released so they got a copy of it
Windows 7 Beta 1 X64 Build 7000 0 081212 http://www.mininova.org/tor/2158341
Well, I tried the Beta 1 Build 7000 version yesterday on my friends PC. He has Intel E6300, Asus P5B-E and 4GB Ram.
. The Quick Lunch has bigger icons, and tray has some new icon for reports (like Security Centar on XP and Vista). And that's about it, everything else is pretty much the same as we can tell, but u can test it better and let us now what is else new.
We didn't try it much, didn't install any drivers, but it recognize everything except the Lan card and we think chipset.
Just got a quick look and we can say it changes differently and has more pretty themes
And the last thing in idle mode when we didn't do nothing it consumes 550MB of RAM. I think that is success contrary to Vista that requires 800-900MB (Aero theme included in both cases).
any torrents links? (espec 64bit)
[nuked]worst.OS.ever.made.get.Ubuntu-Linux
anyone have activation patch?
was wondering if someone would download the torrent and upload to rapidshare and link it here plz (x64 version) as my isp has banned me from using torrents
if you install this it will only work for 30 days in order for you to use it until July you need to activate it online which in this case without a product key it will not allow you to activate it… does anyone have a working crack for this?
Does this Windows 7 have the annoying UAC feature of Vista ?
@5 somedude
the quicklaunch has bigger icons unless you check the "use small icons" box.
..and it's not pretty much the same as vista.. it has simmiliar layout as vista but much better functionality, it's easier to acces things, it's more user friendly. i like it. it's a sad thing for all the people who purchased vista
@11
yes it has UAC but not annoying at all as vistas.. it only asks your permission if you want to install a program, but you can turn that off easily
get Linux ?
Linux is a damn horrible and unoptimized and weak OS.
DO NOT WASTE your time with this Linux s.h.i.t.!!!
Already downloaded Microsoft.Windows.7.Beta.1.Build.7000.x64.DVD-WinBeta, burning to DVD
I like Windows 7 so far. It has a lot of promise and a lot to offer.
i hope this one will be out soon with the crack.. or an activator or something.. me and me friend tested it and u really can feel the difference.. faster, less RAM usage, fast boot etc …the themes are very coool too.. love the 'fighting fish' wallpaper..
why on earth are people still asking for an activation patch or crack. Just wait a day to get a product ket from the official download page when it comes available. Not rocket science. Also microsoft has stated that the beta would in fact expire on the 1st of August which leads me to wonder if the so called bets that was leaked a while ago may not actually be the real beta. Anyways we shall see tomorrow.
Any RS Links please?
@11 & @13 –
you can also configure the way it acts and works in win 7
Tried it and its exactly the same as vista except for a few pointles things:
The menu bar is bigger, and takes up more screen space. whats the point?
The icons are different, ooohh big deal.
Menu has changed, and is slower and more cluttered than vista.
Sidebar is gone, widgets now crowd desktop, another whats the point? Much more organized and easier on the eyes when they are placed into the sidebar.
After playing with it for a day I realiazed its just vista skinned with a crappier gui and less desktop space. It still runs horribly slow like vista, crashes like vista, and is a resource hog like vista. Looks like the majority of us smart users will be sticking with XP for another few years, only an id1ot would be fooled by the useless pretty skins MS sells as an OS.
Windows 7 has been reviewed by a few TOP sites, and has been found to run faster than XP. Yes, it even runs very well on EeePC's which Asus have tested. Slow? BS.
Gadgets are CONFIGURABLE. If you want them on the side, have them there. UI is OK, much the same. The point of this release is to improve performance but to keep the UI much the same. And that's what has been done.

[unnuked]Linux.is.a.piece.of.buggy.sh!t.keep.your.windows.and.stfu.linux.prick
I've used Linux, and Ubuntu FAILS VERY HARD. OK, network profile off the bat is screwed, and hasn't been fixed since it came out in version 6. There are MANY others, not to mention the BS install methods. Yast is ok, but still inferior, and that's only one distro.
Simple. SHUT UP Linux pricks, get over your shells and get into the current technology of a nice os which never has the epic fails of Linux. Windows.
If you like to bag Windows, make your own OS [HA!] or use Linux. Have fun, because I will watch you go to 100x the effort I do to do the same things.

Sooo….Windows 7 better then XP?
@ 24
No, not at all. Windows XP is here to stay, still the fastest, most stable OS from microsoft. Only an id1ot would switch to vista or 7, because its guaranteed to run slower and have more problems than XP.
@21 – either you haven't really tried it or you are a pathological liar. I've been using Windows 7 betas for awhile. It's definitely NOT Vista. It's much, much faster. I have long loved XP but W7 is better than XP and Vista. Its not slow or sluggish, it doesn't sit and use 90%resources like Vista does. Windows 7 is a superior OS to everything else available for Windows users.
as a professional user in audio world, I can safely say i'll be sticking to XP for a long time from now – don't believe the hype
What was wrong with Win95SE?
I'm going to say with XP and my vista theme. Best of both worlds.
It looks more promising than XP, but we won't know for sure until the official release comes out (not betas).
Betas have many things that need to be fixed, tweaked, etc. That's why they are called betas, not finals.
For the moment XP is better than Vista, Linux, any Mac OS.
Sure it isn't as pretty, and I do find Mac OS more stable… however you can't do as many things with ANY other OS as you can with windows (like it or not).
That ofcourse depends on the users needs.
Windows 7 is working better than Vista did, so let's hope the final product is worth switching to.
@ 26
LOL Another rabid M$ fanboii.
OK, now install XP on the same machine and tell me which one runs faster. Yeah, exactly what I thought.
There is a real difference between Vista and Windows 7. Been running the Beta for a week now and it is running smooth so considering this is still only in beta, I believe this will be the OS to replace XP. Don't get me wrong, XP is great and I'm typing now with XP but it will be replaced and in my eyes W7 looks to be the right path.
Another attempt from Micro$hit to chnage our OS.

Windows 7 beta 1 performance – How does the OS compare to Vista and XP?
Windows Vista SP1 32-bit
Windows XP SP3 32-bit
Windows 7 (build 6.1.7000.0.081212-1400)
* An AMD Phenom 9700 2.4GHz system fitted with an ATI Radeon 3850 and 4GB of RAM
Score (less is better)
61 – XP
52 – VISTA
25 – WIN7
* An Intel Pentium Dual Core E2200 2.2GHz fitted with an NVIDIA GeForce 8400 GS and 1GB of RAM
Score (less is better)
56 – XP
57 – VISTA
25 – WIN7
@31
ZDNet did exactly that, windows 7 was faster in every test they threw at it
http://blogs.zdnet.com/hardware/?p=3236&page=1
any windows server 2008 r2 ?
Ahem, just an observation but, XP runs great & super quick when you first install it, then you start banging on the SP's & gets bogged down etc, same with all other OS's I've found, probably be the same with 7 after MS start to release all it's patches!!!

the only reason W7 is faster in every test is because it's a beta and full of bloatware as any final versions.
Vista when was in beta stage it was way much faster then the final.
Don't hold your breath, hoping W7 will be better then XP. When the final version comes out it could, hopefully, beat Vista in usability and performance, but not XP.
correction "and full of bloatware" should read as "and NOT full of bloatware"
can somebody give link for download from microsoft ?
The real world: my friends finally gave up all his Dell PCs running Windows 95 this week. They have served him well in a medical office. Now they are upgrading. XP is stable. Vista is a pain. Let's hope Windows 7 will erase the bad memory. My employer is using XP Pro and will do so for many years to come. We think in terms of investment and support issues, not what's the coolest and latest.
can u install games etc like cod5 and that onto windows 7 and they run ok? prob no get graphics drivers etc for the os yet mind u? just wanted 2 know if anyone was sucseful in getting any pc games working on it thanks
Sigh, just wait with all the flames till it's released…
1) If you want to do speed tests, please perform those on equal machines, and machines that meat the requirements for the most CPU/RAM eating OS
2) The most stupid discussion is the one win/linux. Sigh this is a endless one. Same discussion between using gnome or kde
3) You guys are all 15 or so ??
4) Make your own choice and don't insult people who have a different opinion …
"Vista when was in beta stage it was way much faster then the final."
What have you been smoking? Gimme some of it, must be good $hit. I tried Vista Betas back then and they were horrible. Been using W7 Beta 7000 for a week and I'm impressed. Runs faster than my XP install, tho that one is more bloated with software/drivers that have been installed over the last couple of months. Still, W gives you the good things from Vista without hogging as much resources and disk space. And once you get used to the new taskbar it is really nice to use.
why cant we have a xp 2 instead of windows 7
Cant believe peeps still trying to cover xp. It was ok to comparing it to Vista. But Win7 is a whole new era in computing. Those who claim Win7 cant beat XP: measuring Win7 with XP thats the last thing i would think about. I've long forgotten xp already. Its time to move on. 7 is faster more reliable and more entertaining in every single way Microsoft has ever been to date.
I've been testing the pre-beta for 3 weeks now and i got to say im way over impressed.
I downloaded the x64 Beta and will install it as my primary OS as its compatible with drivers software and everything else. ITS BETTER FASTER STRONGER.
haters eat S.H.I.T and die!
reloadxero does it work with pc games windows 7? id install it as my 1st os if i knew it would run all my games ok?
Any Rapidshare links to the x64 version please?
"XP lovers" think that XP was made by a different company.
People XP is excellent OS made by Microsoft. Of course they can make better and they are doing it now with Windows 7. So, you can stick to the old, or try, and stay with the new. I favor the new.
Windows 3.1 with Transport Tycoon is the way to go!!!! YAY!!
i agree who even uses the word Windows XP anymore. I havent thoght about it in years. It's old and outdated and those who prefer that over recent technology probably shouldn't be talking about the latest technology at all as…well…YOU DONT LIKE IT…OR PROGRESS FOR THAT MATTER.
People like you are the cripling downers in society that latch on to any hope of a better future by improving what we have today instead of changing it (probably for the better) or inventing whole new (and probably simpler more realistic) ways of doing something. Congrats and communist societies would love you
I have windows 7 32 bit and after reading this will download the 64 bit. windows 7 is an incredible achievement over xp and vista and im proud of microsoft for having some real competition against anything Apple can dish out. the features, the effects, the interface- its all so perfect and with so little ram and hard drive space required. all games work, 95% of programs work, and the best thing is…IT INTELLIGENTLY FINDS DRIVERS AUTOMATICALLY IF YOU DONT HAVE ANY…i had my realtek high definition speakers, microphone, and touch buttons working in seconds and didnt require pulling out the CD or going to the website and manualy downloading the latest drivers.
I love you windows 7 and because of you i was inspired to release my Windows 7 theme for the PS3!..you XP fanboys need to get a life…who still uses an operating system with the word "START" in the corner huh? Learn sign language and get the bubble bi tc hes.
Vista is hardly anymore secure then xp, do a fresh install of vista then check windows update to see how many security patches there are it's ridiculous and it's only been out 2 years.I've studied IT for three years and am an MCSE, people say vista is more secure but never give any facts as to why it's more secure just because microsoft says it's more secure people are too guilable these days.
only a moron could say win7 or vista is faster than XP. Less memory usage = faster no matter how you try and spin it. Ill be sticking with XP untill M$ gets off their lazy a$$es and actually make an OS better, faster, and that uses less memory than XP.
No thanks, not about to drop $2000 to barely run an OS on the edge of being stable , when XP still works just fine and is screaming fast.
Soooo any links for a 32bits version of Win7?
For all the peaople loving XP and telling us Vista or W7 are unstable … sometime I tell to myself if the problem isnt user and not the system … I have Vista (64) for half an year and had not at least one problem, crash or something (running many games and applications every day) … am I that lucky or is that, because I know what NOT to do to crash it … and many people with SLOW system problem are trying to run Vista or W7 on old PC … wake up, its 2009 … dont cry that new windows dont run on your WinXP-old machine … so learn and think before you tell its crap … being not able to use something doesnt mean its bad …
And about Linux … no commenting the flame … just let us be – we discuse another system and are not interested in Linux …
I have INTEL Q8200 QUAD CORE 2.33GHZ DDRII 4GB…. I`ve installed the w7 and compare it with xp sp3 which i am using logn time
… Pffff as i taught… XP is and will be for a long time more reliable and better then w7… I thing the guys from M$ aren`t in condition to make something better then xp now… So LONG LIVE XP!
@58 It's the first public Beta release you idiot, of course there may be some problems when comparing it to say, a operating system with THREE service packs to finally get it to run without bugs. D-bag
@58 you didnt say anything what is better in XP …
1. Install Windows 7 without any product activation key.
2. After installation is completed, use the Windows 7 for 30 days and wait for the remaining days left to activate Windows counting down to 0, or almost zero.
3. When the activation grace period (or evaluation trial period) is almost expired or ended, log on to Windows 7 desktop, and open a Command Prompt window (i.e. type Cmd in Start Search and hit Enter).
4. Type any of the following commands into the command prompt, and then hit Enter:
sysprep /generalize
slmgr.vbs -rearm
rundll32 slc.dll,SLReArmWindows
slmgr /rearm
5. Reboot Windows 7 to enjoy another 30 days of free usage without worrying about activation nor even need to crack Windows 7.
6. When the activation grace period countdown timer almost running down to 0 again, repeat the ‘rearm’ trick to enjoy another 30 days of Windows 7 for free. User can run the rearm command for maximum of 3 times.
As rearm only works for 3 times, make sure the command is only been run when the 30 days countdown of evaluation period is almost expired.
lol at flamebate "XP" / "XP still is the best and fastest" idiot.
You have obviously not even tested Windows 7 & you have obviously not looked at anyones reviews.
Windows 7 is better, fact!
It looks better than XP, its more secure than XP & it uses less memory in area's then XP. Its coded better than XP which is why even on the area's it does use more memory Windows 7 still is faster.
You must be between the age of 13 to 17, the typical internet ret4rd age. Think your better then everyone else, think you know stuff that others don't and you probably like to think of yourself as a super 1337 h4xor – your not.
The reviews are right, they aint done by idi0ts such as yourself. Now kindly GTFO.
Google: Windows 7 vs XP
For all those saying they won't bother with Win 7 and stick to XP – I hated Vista, XP does all I need – having said that, I've been using the the beta build of 7 for a week now – it's noticeably faster than XP in every way. The install took under 20 mins (clean) – all drivers were sorted except Creative X-Fi, which I got. The Nvidia display drivers work much better than those for XP. Easy to customize, UAC tamed – Photoshop runs faster – all plugins work (except for OnOne). No trouble installing codecs or using VLC or Windows Media Classic – the Media Centre works without falling over – the Live TV app works fine (which is good because Pinnacle's Media Centre fails)
Screensaver doesn't engage for some reason – but, apart from that – I'm sold – I'll buy this when it's available.
@30
Your name (Higher IQ) is ironic, right?
XP better than OS X? Don't make me laugh.
To get back OT though, Win 7 definitely looks like a step up from Vista…. going to try installing it on my new Core i7 when it arrives in a fortnight – hopefully better than the catastrophe that is Vista.
W7 can run games i ran bf2 and others but the next day i ran updates and what do you know games didnt work . so yes it can run games but theres probely still some bugs so keep your xp/vista for games . been running w7 for over a week better than vista slower than xp will be a lot better when full version comes out xD
ohh and have it on my Eee pc works great
There is no way vi$ta is better OS, in any way at all.
There are still BSOD anytime you try and do anything both GPU and CPU intensive, automatic BSOD, and then you try and update and guess what? BSOD. Dont even get me started on driver support, after all this time my printer, camera, and sound card are STILL not supported.
There are benchmarks that prove its 43% slower than XP in all areas, no matter what your specs. And anyone Ive talked to, out of everyone who used vista, ALL of them "upgraded" to XP and have had no problems at all except that their computer runs faster lol, and no BSOD.
There's nothing wrong with Vista but there sure as hell is something wrong with people. Windows Seven will take the same beating Vista has and for the same reason. Ninety-nine percent of PC users are so dense that their still wondering where the "any key" is. In fact, if there's one thing that guarantee's Windows Seven will get a bad rap it's the number of users who will jump into using it head first without bothering to be sure that their hardware and software will run on it or if they even need to upgrade to a new OS. Then, those same people (idiots?) will blame it on Windows Seven and Microsoft and spend the next six months trying to convince people not to upgrade becuase Windows Seven sucks.
"XP > Vi$ta"
You stand out like a soar thumb every single time with your childish dribble.
I have not heard of anyone getting as many BSOD's as you go on about with Vista, maybe your system is an outdated POS?
Yes I agree that XP is better than Vista… but Windows 7 no way. Windows 7's beta code is working really well, many would say it could go final already. The good news toward's that is if its already running great for so many people then the final code is going to be tweaked even more and will run even better – MS are really listening to people this time around.
Windows 7 supports more PC's then Vista so there is a much greater chance that the people that tried Vista and found it too slow will pick up Windows 7 and give it a try. Im pretty sure that most of the people that try Windows 7 would stick with it, it really is that good.
You get DX10 support (like Vista) only its now going to run even better, your games will look better then they ever did on XP.
You get Media Centre (like Vista) something that you cant get on Windows XP Home/Pro, this allows the Xbox 360 to do much more.
If you love XP so much why not simply partition your HDD and dual boot both XP & Win7.

Please stop complaining about Windows 7. If you haven't noticed, its in BETA. To start fighting that its garbage will only get your free internet coupon taken away.
I use a Mac at work and a PC at home. I simply won't be upgrading from XP until I have to, mostly because I find it a hassle. In saying that Windows 7 definitely intrigues me, will be keen to give it a bash sometime.
As far as MAC vs PC, I don't think its a fair comparison as the hardware choices are so much smaller on the mac vs whats available on the pc, and all those combination make it impossible to be as stable as a mac os, so I think Microsoft do extremely well considering.

You vista hater-bashers! Mark my words of wisdom you all will be yanking your pecker when vista SP2 comes out!! same old same old sheep were complaining about xp before we had sp2 and sp3..
wINDOWS 7 IS tHE oNE…Mark My Words!
>vista 7, ahem sorry windows 7 is great…
>looks and performs better
>clean install in less than 20mins
>all drivers are loaded
>im using athlon 64×2 3800+, gigabyte m57sli-s4 board, gigabyte n8600gt vga, 2gb ddr2 800mhz ram
>problems with alcohol120%, can't install it
>subs not showing in media player classic
>new games already working like spore and nfs undercover
>can't wait for official release…
Ive been having some problems with this so far… like Itunes freezes whenever I start it (despite installing both Windows 7 beta and Itunes over and over again), and whenever it comes off hibernate it's practically useless until I do a reboot.
It really p's me off when people moan about aspects of an OS that can easily be changed and customie to suit your own needs and desires. I like vista and always have done but from what I've read since it's release the main thing people dislike is the UAC which can be turned off if you so wish so I don't see what the problem is. I have on regular occasions seen people moan that it's slow on there pc's / laptops however on most occasions this is down to people trying to run it on old computers that are simply too old to cope with the OS. People shouldn't complain or moan that an OS sucks when it's there own stupid fault for trying to run it on old computers. Move with the times and either stick with what the computer came with or get another that is capable of running the OS properly and to how you expect it to run. Anyways I like many others really like W7 and I thank microsoft for the improvements made so far. If like me you find the taskbar too big for your liking then go to taskbar properties and tick the show small icons box.Doing this will give you a taskbar at the size we've been used to for years. You can also return the taskbar tabs back to the tabs we have been using for years with the text by selecting combine taskbar when full or never combine in taskbar properties. To end this I will simply say if you don't like how things have been set up by default then change the settings instead of moaning about it.I say to those people that moan that the phrase "a bad builder always blames their tools" comes to mind with you.
XP – Old computers
VISTA – New computers (2GB of RAM minimum, 4GB if u are gaming)
Win7- Old&New
My version works forever with the timepatch..
i hate XP, vista, Win7 they are using so much hardware, i can not run on my PC (160Mhz, 64MB ram, 40MB HDD)
WIN3.11 FOREVER!!!
upgrade your hardware before you upgrade your OS!
and yes, the vista is a failure to the MS as the WinMillenium was

If you guys need to play games why don't you use DOS. It loads faster and it runs faster than Windows 7 plus you don't waste 4 GB on disk to install it…;-)
I believe MS wants us to believe they released an Operating System.. which is not.
M.
linux a week OS???? it is quite possible the most powerful OS get your facts straight dont base your linux knowledge on ubuntu!
Installed Windows 7. After install, here are a few observations.
Install time: 17min.
Time to get from power on to logon screen: 65sec
Time from logon screen to desktop: 55sec
Still slow but faster than Vista and XP. Visualization is nice. Taskbar is different, but not difficult to figure out. I dont like how it defaults to notebook power options when installing on a desktop, but easily fixed. Didnt spend much time piddling just checked a few items. Admin tools are similar to vista. Automatically setup network and sharing of docs, pics, vids. etc. So far, I am impressed. Will foll with it more when time allows, but so far so good. Would like to get a key to unlock it passed 30 days.
