Interesting.. I wonder if the smarmy “mac guy” will mention this in the Apple commercials… seeing as how it’s “MS” and, therefore, sh1t.

Yup – the last major application to go UB (Intel native), and from the largest software company in the world.
Many would say its now the worst copy of Office available, and to be honest theres few new features, except usable speed on intel Macs and support for Office 2007’s new formats.
If you really only need a basic Word Processor – try Pages, it will do 90% of the stuff word can do, and easier.

Nice to finally see an application for Mac posted on RlSLOG. Windows are only good for Powerpoint and Word. Mac’s are good for everything else. All those movies you guys post, yeah, edited on a Mac, with Apple software. The music you post, ditto for it too.

For some reason – Mac users think their machines are perfected for media.

Congragulations! You own a computer that comes with movie and imaging software that is worth 30$! Of course it’s better than the Windows Default! (MS Paint/Movie Maker). Not only that, the company of that computer donates millions a year to the media software industry *just* to gain the title as “best media machine!”

No offense – But coming from someone who does digital imaging, I’d much rather purchase Paint Shop Pro or Adobe Photoshop for a PC than a MAC.

  20. The_Doctor
    February 5th, 2008 | 04:57

@20 Actually, not many Mac users think their machines are perfected just for media, most of the people that say Macs are great for video and audio don’t know crap about a mac. Obviously a lot of software that is A/V based is included wit the mac, however, we are talking about things that normal people use in everyday life, such as iLife, does all your photos, videos. web pages, etc. It is simple and pretty nice, yet Microsoft could put some effort into it and do the same thing.

As a real user, I say Apple USE to be JUST for media applications, and for those tasks it did kick butt and it is still popular among the media nuts. However, OS X is nothing more than a OS, an alternative to Windows that in my opinion is not only easy to use for the recreational computer user but it also has one hell of an engine for the geek. Video software and photo software is pretty much equivalent on both the PC and Mac. I use mine to do some photo stuff, but more or less I se it for network design and engineering. I love Omni-graffle, the ability to fully control my OS and having a mostly netbsd shell at my fingertips seals the deal.

Now, a Mac against a PC with say photoshop, well, I would take the Mac. It uses less system resources so that Photoshop runs faster, and, I personally like the mac layout, I have more room to arrange things on my screen rather than having everything contained in one window. However, Photoshop on a PC will accomplish the exact same thing in the ned as the Mac.

Ok, Mac is not the worlds “best video machine”, well, one of the 8-core xeon Pro series Macs might land in that arena… these days, it is just a multi-purpose OS for the masses, So stop calling it a “Video Machine”.

@20 ~ good point about the sponsorship, unfortunately, no one cares. You may prefer a PC *shrug* but, Adobe was designed to run on the mac, and it’s a far more stable platform.

    Keep bumpin’ OSX rls!

does this version include a crack/patch to bypass the restriction when more than 1 version is running on a network?

I ask because previous version, when there are more than 1 copy on a wireless network, it will not let you load up unless you disable wifi…

@23 I have not suffered that problem, I have it running on 3 different systems…
Thanks for this, great to see some OSX stuff here, but come on guys, how about covering it on time? The scene release might be new, but this has been out for a solid few weeks.

    Thanks anyway! And go Apple!

I use Mac 2004 and I absolutely love it. I wish it had some of the features that the old iWorks used to have (instead of having to use them separately) but hopefully this 2008 Mac Office version will have them. Thanks for posting this!

Nice thing about Office is that Mac can read PC and PC can read Mac. MS updates Office for Mac every four years. I’ve been emailing my files back and forth from PC at work to Mac at home for years. Thanks for the upload and update.

“so they have office for mac now, hmm.”

Last time I had a mac (well I had two, both b/w) was when it was system 7, windows was 3.1 and the mac office (i think i only had word) was way better than the pc version as at the time pcs would crash three times a day, macintosh only once or twice :) also it was easier to use as it was system 7

Use Little Snitch Network Monitor to disable all outgoing and incoming traffic from MS Office… make sure to disable traffic for Word, Excel and Powerpoint. No problems with running it on 2 different macbooks simultaneously on the same network for me after doing that… cheers!

Sorry for the delay. Yes, use Little Snitch (get all the information you need from Codez4Mac or Mac-bb) to block the communication and you are good to go. If you don’t want to use LS on both, as long as you block one, its no problem. :)

    Good luck to everyone!

Microsoft makes Office for OSX because of antitrust settlements with Apple AFAIK. US law makes them do it, not cash.

And MS Office for Mac was already mentioned in Apple commercials.

Yeah it would be nice to see more Mac Apps posted!

I just got a new Vista notebook and installed OSX 10.5 Leopard on it. Macs are used a lot at my school and I’m getting more and more comfortable using the OS so I thought I’d just give it a shot. It looks, runs and ‘feels’ great!
The only problem right now is that there aren’t that many drivers available for Leopard, which for me means I have no sound and no Internet connection.

If anyone else is interested in accomplishing what I did, Google “OSX86″ and have a look at the insanelymac.com forum.

    @2 (and everyone else)
i thought MS Office was actually on Macs slightly BEFORE it came to Windows (1989). so yes, they make Office for macs now, always have.

this version of it isnt bad, imo. i like the feel of Pages, but i use spreadsheets a lot and im used to excel, so ive been using the student ed of this for the past few weeks, and no complaints.

  42. mynameis
    February 5th, 2008 | 13:00

@40 – When you have actual Apple hardware – you don’t need to deal with all the OSX86 driver crap. I’ve been through it, it’s not worth it. Best choice is to get a MacBook.

  43. kernelpanic
    February 5th, 2008 | 13:01

«so they have office for mac now, hmm.»

so, they have office for windows now, hmm.

@20 Photoshop on a PC over Photoshop on a Mac, you have to be KIDDING RIGHT?

I’ve used on BOTH platforms and therefore I can give an opinion. Use BOTH products before giving a biased comparison you lamer!!

PS I would recommend Pages for Mac users, you export to MS WORD format anyway if you really need that.

  47. bish
    February 5th, 2008 | 16:25

    @47

i agree, on everything you said. iwork is better generally, imo, except that numbers – while it looks nice, and is surprisingly powerful – is a bit hard to get used to if youre a dyed-in-the-wool excel user. i spose thats true of all the iwork vs office apps, but with a word processor, it doesnt really make all that much difference (imo) – just personal taste really.

but yeah, having run photoshop on pc and mac, id never ever CHOOSE the pc version!

  48. Strider
    February 5th, 2008 | 17:13

I am seriously surprised no-one has mentioned NeoOffice yet. It is a great light-weight word processing application available as a universal binary for Mac OS X. For unformated text files such as HTML and Objective-C code, get TextMate, which simply kicks ass. Applications like that make the Mac IMHO.

Top 5 reasons to get a Mac:

    01) A Mac can run Windows without hassle, but a PC can´t easily run Mac OS X as easily.

    02) It is based on Unix (or actually BSD) and is therefore more secure, stable and fast than a Microsoft operating system.

    03) The GUI is about twice as nice, which of course is a matter of taste but if you honestly prefer Windows GUI then obviously you have no taste.

    04) Native OpenGL support means we are going to get OpenGL 3.0 ASAP while Microsoft users are going to have to wait until … never

    05) Adobe Creative Suite, Final Cut Pro, Logic Pro, Propellerheads Reason and Ableton Live all run WAY better on a Mac. For audio apps you dont even have to buy an external audio card to get ZERO latency with MIDI!

    Cheers!

    /strider

Nobody here has really mentioned the business implications yet. In the business world, Microsoft’s Office suite is THE standard, and if you want to effectively communicate you have to match what your customers and clients are using. Excel alone is essential. The other reason alternatives like Pages or OpenOffice aren’t nearly as viable is support. Any large business is going to have a major support system in place, and you are definately not going to want to support all the compatibility issues you’ll have, much less the cost of re-training employees that already know Office.

Also for all the Mactards saying the PC is worthless, one word: games. Any serious gamer has a pro box thats kept up to date with the latest hardware. Real tough to slap that new Radeon HD 3870 X2 in your iMac…

The Macs are great though for AV production.

  53. pcgaming
    February 6th, 2008 | 13:39

PC gaming is becoming very stale though. It’s just rehash after rehash of the sames games with slightly sexier graphics. And most of the great ones are making their way to the PS3/XBox 360 anyway.

I think most who have been PC gamers for long enough are plain tired of constantly upgrading their hardware and dealing with compatibility issues and bugs. Do I really want to buy that top-end PC video card for $599? Or should I just get a 360/PSS3?

Console graphics are satisfying enough and it won’t be long till consoles completely overtake PC gaming.

I know if I was a developer I’d rather make a game for a console. At least I know exactly what specs to code for.

Try telling that to the 10 million World of Warcraft customers (Yes i know WoW is on Mac too but the vast majority plays it on PC).

That and the fact that first-person shooters will always be better with a mouse.

  58. Wow
    February 12th, 2008 | 01:30

You guys are saying that mac is better because of the simple to use interface? Who the hell cares? A windows operating system isn’t hard to learn or use, so if you can’t because it’s too complicated then you don’t deserve to use a computer at all. What does it matter if a Mac can run Windows and not the other way around? Why would you even do that? If you’re going for OSX, then go for it. Idiots. GUI doesn’t matter, so if you think you’re classy cause of the GUI, go kill yourself.
OpenGL? Windows uses DX10 as of now, so it doesn’t need OGL. DX Blows OGL out of the water. Photoshop and other adobe products do run better, but what the hell else are you gonna run? The mac has a very weak library of software, mostly due to nothing being COMPATIBLE with it. So if you guys think you’re being chic, cool, or superior because you use a mac, just shut the hell up and think again. I’m not even a windows fanboy, I just hate macs. Just save some time and switch to linux.

  59. Anonz
    February 14th, 2008 | 04:42

I don’t understand this whole argument of PC vs Mac. It should all about what you prefer, and you shouldn’t say one is better than the other because they both have a number of flaws. I personally own a Mac that runs both OSX and linux. I used to have a Windows partition, but I never used it so I got rid of it. I owned a PC until 2 years ago when I bought my mac, and I personally like my mac better.

I’m not going to tell you that mac is better than pc, I just like it more. I think if you’re an old person, mac is much simpler to understand how to use ( I don’t mean to offend any one, and I’m not an old person, thank you). And I think the same goes for children.

I don’t like this Mac vs PC war that’s going on. Macs are doing well in the market right now, let’s appreciate the diversity, PCs. And Macs, don’t act better than the PCs because you cost a fortune.
