Microsoft increases mail storage to 5 GB
Microsoft Corp. is increasing the storage limit for its Web-based e-mail service, surpassing competitor Google Inc.’s limit but far short of Yahoo Inc.’s unlimited storage. The limit for a free Windows Live Hotmail account will increase from 2G bytes to 5G bytes. The change will be rolled out to users over the next few weeks along with a series of other upgrades, wrote Ellie Powers-Boyle, a Microsoft program manager, on a company blog. Google offers around 2.8G bytes of storage space for a free account. Last week, Google began selling storage space that can be used for either its Gmail or Picasa photo sharing services for US$20 a year for another 6G bytes as well as more expensive plans.
Under the new changes, Microsoft will let users store 10G bytes of e-mail data for a $14.99 annual subscription. Those subscribers will also get a new feature: the ability to forward e-mail from their Hotmail account to a Gmail or other e-mail account. Unfortunately, users of the free service will only be able to forward e-mail from one Hotmail account to another Hotmail account, essentially blocking them from a quick migration to another free e-mail service. Another new Hotmail option is the ability to shut off the “Today” feature, which shows top news and features stories on Microsoft’s MSN portal. It appears after a user logs into their Hotmail account. Microsoft is also changing some of Hotmail’s security features. One new feature is a link, “Report phishing” that alerts Microsoft to a possible scam Web site linked to an e-mail. Are we entering the era of paid mailboxes? I still don’t see a rational usage for 2 or 3 gigabytes of mails though…

I wonder if someone actually uses at least 1 GB of mail box space?
there may be such an user, but it’s quite extreme in my opinion. may be if you keep all your mail in the box and not use outlook or similar application, but then still, gigabyte is hell of the text.
next, i still stick with gmail because of its features and excellent antispam. i guess most people would rather use more sophisticated email service with few megabytes than 5 gb monster which doesn’t even allow you to forward your conversations.
A friend of mine used up all of his gmail space. not by emails though. he used gmail drive and filled his account with 15 mb split rar files of the office so he could watch his fav eps where ever he was. he stopped when he got a usb drive. (and when he could not receive any new email.
I am still going to use inbox, but I will need to find a encrypted email service for free, cause I hate paying for stuff. I will never use hotmail again, it might as well just change it’s own name to: Don’t spam use We Spam you.
like this is news to post on this one so shit page, fuckers go gay youselfe
does ms still freeze your account (snd delete all the mails) when you haven’t been logged in for 30 days ?
Has anyone seen my car keys?
thats nice
Yahoo pwns. I have it and it’s cool.
without pop3/smtp support, the free hotmail account means really nothing no matter how big it is.
I use mozilla firefox and with the use of a couple of free add ons I can service both hotmail and yahoo free e mail accounts.
@Chaoscodes on post 10…
I believe that g-mail has pop3 functionality…atleast i was able to use it together with mozilla thunderbird.
