Microsoft explains weird Windows Vista ad

Did you “get” the new Microsoft commercial? Apparently, some people didn’t, so Microsoft officials were calling reporters Friday to explain it. The Redwood, Wash., company started airing a commercial Thursday night in which comedian Jerry Seinfeld encounters Bill Gates shopping for real leather shoes at Shoe Circus! - “quality shoes at discount prices, why pay more?” - and helps Gates squeeze into a pair. As they walk out of the store together eating churros, Seinfeld asks Gates if he and the other great brains at Microsoft “are ever going to come out with something that will make our computers moist and chewy like cake so we can just eat them while we’re working?” In response, Gates wiggles his bottom.

The ad barely mentions the word “Microsoft” and never mentions Windows. Nevertheless, the Microsoft officials who phoned reporters Friday said it is indeed a campaign to brand Windows, “the start of a conversation … easily the largest marketing campaign we’ve ever had.” Microsoft plans to hire 155 “gurus” by the end of the year to work in Circuit City, Best Buy and other retailers to help customers pick out PCs, said Eric Hollreiser of Microsoft - presumably the way Seinfeld helped Gates pick out shoes. Microsoft is also working with PC manufacturers to deliver “a compelling Windows experience” - to study how long it takes, for example, for Windows to start up and shut down. Mobile phones and Microsoft’s Web site are also part of the plan. Hollreiser said Microsoft will do “a terrific job of delivering consumer information.”

I cant believe this MS refuses to admits theirs ANYTHING wrong with their Vista OS. They blame poor sales on their customers stupidity!! Saying that people just dont know how good Vista is and most people go by word of mouth and dont even try it. Well i tried it and i couldnt stand it, its far too glitz and glam for what i want and i like getting better performance from my pc.

I had XP Pro on my last rig, my new rig came with Vista and other than Crysis there isn’t a game that I cannot run at max settings and most while downloading at the same time. Its different and it takes a while to get used to. (over 6 months crashed twice but not Vistas fault)

I really appreciate the way Microsoft keeps on helping us remember that even though you might have all the money in the world, this still doesn’t automatically mean everything you do will be cool, let alone high quality. Keep up the bad acting Bill!

i seen this on tv the other day, aside from the fact that bill gates was in it, i really didnt have a clue what was being advertised until the end when they showed the windows logo, perhaps they should have left Gates out of it and used Jerry Seinfield and Michael Richards and made it a commercial about “nothing”….would certainly have been more entertaining.

I haven’t seen the commercial, but from reading the description, the message I’d get from it is that Gates (and by extension, Microsoft) doesn’t have a clue what their doing and that the average person knows how to make better choices than them.

#19 - You can’t have Micheal Richards in an ad, unless you want to be known as racists. A sad but real fact. Even though he only screwed up once, he screwed up badly so nobody will risk touching him. Even Seinfeld cut him loose after his “no really Mike’s a great guy” news confrence 2 days after the incident.
