Microsoft enhances Zune, new 8 GB version

Responding to criticism that its original line of Zune music players — available only in black, brown or white — failed to inspire consumers, Microsoft plans to launch on Tuesday a new line if Zunes in a range of colors and bedecked with tattoos, custom engravings, and other artwork.Microsoft will also introduce a $249 Zune with an 80-Gbyte hard drive capable of storing 20,000 songs, 25,000 pictures, and 250 hours of video. Additionally, two flash memory-based Zunes — an 8-Gbyte model and a 4-Gbyte model — will go on sale Tuesday.

The launch comes one year, less a day, after the original Zune player hit stores on November 14, 2006. Customers who purchase one of the new Zunes through Microsoft’s Zune Originals Web site can choose designs from 18 “internationally recognized” artists along with up to three lines of laser-engraved custom text, according to Microsoft. The new Zunes feature redesigned software that Microsoft claims makes it easier to drag and drop content from a Windows desktop to a connected Zune player. A new search feature gives users a master view across all of their digital files, including songs, videos, and podcasts.

I’ll stick with my iPod and N800 thank you.

Do people actually buy Zunes? I haven’t heard of a single guy owning one outside of a few people who got their review copies for free.

3 guys using different names desperately trying to convince us that the ipod is a good mp3 player

i’ve had 2 ipods and both of them sound awful, and the battery after about 15 months the battery life is down to about 3 hours

you gotta hand it to your man Steve Jobs, he mugs you, shafts you, and then you lick his shoes afterwards to say how grateful you are

@ bbd: How much is Microsoft paying you?

I’m very satisfied with the iPods I had so far, meaning it’s now 4:1. They were the first, and they are the best. I’m not an Apple fanboj (next to the actual fruit, the iPod is all I have that is Apple) but the iPod rocks! All the others are just cheap imitations. The Zune looks like a cheap iPod, and technically it doesn’t do anything better. So why buy a knock-off if you can have the real deal?

I’m very happy with my iPod as well, I’m even considering buying a second one. But we gotta give Microsoft some credit for trying:

“Zune’s next move takes their support of emerging artists and literally puts it on their sleeve. Zune Originals is a collection of 27 original works by 18 international artists designed to be engraved onto the back of the device.
On the Zune Originals site, launching today (13 November 2007), visitors will be able to customize their Zune by size, color, illustration and with up to four optional lines of text—all free of charge, at least for the time being.”

micro$oft and apple are two cheeks of the same ass

i’ve bought 2 ipods (first gen and recent gen) and they’re lo-tec and overpriced with dodgy shortlife batteries that you can’t change – anybody who thinks otherwise is just a victim of the hype

  15. BabylonSoul
    November 13th, 2007 | 14:31

…and why is it so wrong to be a victim of the hype? I am one of those victims and, honestly, I don’t want to be saved. Thank you.

    bbd,

you’re an idiot if you cannot change the battery in an iPod or let technicians do that for you. there are plenty of sites on the web that show you how to do that and sell the battery cheap.

and if you hate it, why did you get 2? :D

you can buy whatever you want, i wish you well

but don’t start flaming the zune users for their choice whose product is just as poor and unreliable and unwieldy as yours, just cos you feel you need to defend the fact you’ve bought into the apple hype

that’s the biggest problem i have with these appletards, they’re constantly reminding you of their love of Jobs – which would be fine if their product was actually any good

Speaking of superior mp3 players… I just ordered my Meizu M6 SL over the weekend. The audio chip on the Meizu puts the iPod (and any other player) to shame, big time.

Those who are saying ipod is the best mp3 player havent tried anything else . And the person who says these players are copying the ipod needs a reality check , creative has been in the industry a longer time than apple .As bbd said ipod sold only because of the hype .Creative zen is a much better player and itunes sucks and always will … The new zune looks good imo.

The reason I would buy the Zune over the iPod is that with the Zune, you know there is a huge, well known company behind the product, that you can trust to update and support the device without charging you more and more money every step of the way.

Who ever heard of an AAC file? That is ridiculous. How are a grandmother and grandfather ever supposed to learn and use this type of technology?

Zune looks nice and its new functions are great but iPod still is the best. Nothing compares to the iPod interface, usability and design, although Zune really seems like a good product. Have you seen this iPod Touch ad made by an user? http://www.weshow.com/us/p/21278/home_made_ipod_touch_ad
It shows in less than 30 seconds why Zune is good but an iPod is an iPod. Period.
