Microsoft cuts prices of Windows Vista
Microsoft Corp said on Thursday it plans to cut prices of its Windows Vista operating system sold at retail outlets in a move aimed at pushing customers to switch to the newest version of Windows. The world’s largest software maker said it plans to lower retail prices for Vista in 70 countries later this year in tandem with the shipment of the first major update to Vista, known as Service Pack 1 (SP1). Packaged versions of Windows Vista sold at stores and on the Web account for less than 10 percent of all licenses of the dominant Windows operating system that sits on more than 90 percent of the world’s personal computers. Most consumers opt to buy a new PC, which comes preloaded with the latest version of Windows.

“We anticipate these changed will provide greater opportunities … to sell more stand-alone copies of Windows,” said Brad Brooks, a Microsoft corporate vice president. In the United States, Microsoft will reduce prices for Windows Vista Ultimate, the company’s top-end operating system, to $319 from $399 for the full version and cut the price for an “upgrade” version to $219 from $259 for consumers who already run Windows XP or another edition of Vista. It also cut prices for upgrade versions of Vista Home Premium, its mainstream product, to $129 from $159. The price cuts vary by country. This price cut may be a good news for users who have problems with their illegal copy after recent security update.

I think its still too expensive and overpriced!
I agree with the 1st poster..
I have had no problems with Vista, my version is legit and since I have had it, it has been perfect. The Sp1 update has made it much better and faster. I still recomend all to have it. Also if you have VMware with XP running you have the best of both worlds.
So, a $80 drop on the price of Windows Ultimate. That’s quite hefty. But that still leaves the price at $319 (~€211 or ~2000 SEK) - no-one’s going to buy it. At least none of us around the scene. Only desperate family fathers, clueless single mothers and corporations upgrade at that price.
I’ll be extremely hard pressed and completely desperate before I downgrade to the inefficient, resource-hogging and absolutely HUGE piece of crap that is Windows Vista.
TLDR; No wai.
ChelseaBlue. Sounds like a woman. Single mother, or just general clueless tub of lard that thinks that writing comments at rlslog makes someone understand what they’re talking about?
While Windows Vista isn’t BAD per see, it’s incredibly inefficient, it more or less neuters your computer. Having Windows Vista on your PC is like trying to run an orienteering course with someone kicking you in the crotch.
You can buy Legit Premium from e-bay for £55/$110/€71
If you think its a system hog, you computer is to slow and old, vista ultimate 64 bit, runs faster on my computer than windowx xp pro.
glad i waited and ill still wait until windows 7 comes out in 2009.article source from atomic magazine issue 86.
I am probably the ONLY one here glad that the price cuts were not more drastic.
I picked up the Ultimate upgrade for $115 at Compusa a week ago.
Of course I will need to do a clean install because it hates a couple of things that refuse to remove themselves, which means I have grabbed the SP1 slipstreamed and can use my real number when it comes time
Going to go X64, since my CPU IS a 64, plus everything except epsons TWAIN driver works right out of the box
bout time they make it free… oh wait they did not do that “yet”…
Vista is simply way ahead of it’s time. It will be optimal for the computer that come out in 1 to 2 years. At this moment it’s just polished looking resource hog that adds nothing, and no replacement for the perfectly running XP.
Remember, XP was also terrible when released, but after two years they finally finished it and now everybody is loving it. The same can happen to Vista, if Microsoft doesn’t screw up like they did with ME. Only the future will tell…
if you think the price is a rip off for you.
you want to buy vista here in the U.K
i pay for vista .. 10 bucks
Lol, that’s why the cracks exists.
Computer: $1000.
Internet: $50.
Windows Vista: Priceless.
Vista Ultimate 64bit is way faster than XP Pro SP2
get with the program, kids.
ZHITTTTTTT!!!! EVEN IF IT WAS FREE I STILL WOULDNT GET IT
still using windows xp eue 3.5 by jibriel and updates from windiz.com
price: 0$
arrrrg!
Just bought a new machine with Vista on it. The only thing that truly sucks is that I cannot install XP (to dual boot) because the mtherfcker driver gremlins keep on giving bluescreens at the very first step of the install.
I just picked up a legit OEM version of XP Professional for $150. Still quite a bit of difference from $319. Besides, I think I’ll wait for Windows 7 to debut before I even think of upgrading from XP. Even Microsoft doesn’t believe Vista is all it’s cracked up to be, why then would they be working on a new OS so quickly after Vista’s release? Well, basically because it sucks. True PC enthusiasts don’t care about the fluff, they care about the performance.
i have xp and it works great so do a lot of people i know so why change to the inferior new product
still happy with win professional 2000…crash free since past 10 mths..
had to install vista 64bit on a new machine with 4gb ram, and compared it to how it ran back when i tested it on a two years old laptop with 1gb ram. it was of course was slow on the laptop compared to xp, but on the new machine, it runs great. and just cause it makes use of your hardware and doesnt just let your ram empty in idle mode, doesnt mean its a ressource hog. one or two bugs that annoy me, hopefully the service pack will solve it, especially the sometimes occuring “you can select only one file” bug…
would i change my running win xp system to vista? no
would i prefer vista over xp when i have a new machine? yes
@ Luckmann
“Single mother, or just general clueless tub of lard that thinks that writing comments at rlslog makes someone understand what they’re talking about?”
Truer words have rarely been spoken. Unfortunately, you seemed to miss your own advice…. since you don’t seem to know what you’re talking about.
Microsoft tried to fool the entire population by smothering them with bogus ads about Vista… how many different versions do we need? No one needs Vista for business - there are absolutely no benefits to upgrading a business machine from xp to vista - just a steep learning curve to find out where everything is… what a waste of time and money.
I tried Vista Ultimate for 6 months and had nothing but problems - having to fetch numerous drivers right after installation and deal with random crashes to not being able to play my favorite games or even do work at home.
Vistas system requirements are just silly. What is it about Vista users want or like? Is it the look? That can be achieved with Winblinds or similar. Surely it’s not for the features - there just aren’t enough to warrant the price of the software. What a ripoff.
I’m sticking with Ubuntu and XP Pro.
Only way to sell Vista to experienced users is in cheap 10-pack on rewritable discs.
Viasta has many unique improved USER freidnly featuers over XP. Out of teh gate, Vista is a 1000 times better than XP was when it came out. It wasn’t until SP2 was released that XP was even worth considering. Comments from Win2K users regarding XP were: Bloatware, not resourceful, way too much eye candy, WAY too many security holes, way too many errors and drivers incompatibilities. Do you remember how horrible that online Hardware Conpatibility List list was? The countless users complaqining that it didn’t work on their system and in order ot upgrade they needed to invest in a new high end box? If you were even born more than a few years ago of course.
Vista offers a much better Explorer system, the common user will find it far mroe intuitive and easy to use.
I avoided XP like the plague until it was fixed, then STILL kept with 2K which for my personal box, which I had outperforming all my friends XP boxes, my benchmarks and performance was light years ahead of their unresourceful and buggy XP systems.
But several years later we see the same circle again, XP riules and anything NEW and unfaniliar sux, or is at least scary. It has been the same since Windows 3.11 each time it is new, there are a group of dissenters with no real expereince using the new OS claiming that their existing choice is the best.
But hey, we’ll just see this go full circle again in a few years when the next MS OS is released. THAT SUX and is way too expesive and unresourceful, Vista rules, yad yada.
Just the same old song and dance.
I wouldn’t want this crap for free why should a discount make me buy it?
OMG Microsoft VS Pirates
Microsoft will be unable to create that much anti crack “updates”, cause there r 1-2 new vista cracks every weeks, one of them still remaining undetectable by Microsoft, such as Enterprise/Business activation server, so don’t take this article very seriously, unless u r still using Paradox crack or stop timer, there are much better cracks around here
@7 pantsonnos
I challenge you to prove what your’re saying. Benchmark results indicate that XP pro is faster in most tests. What kind of tests did you do?
ZERO advantage to using Vista over XP, period. Why bother upgrading?
The price is not the problem with Vista. People who have would pay and people who have not would pirate anyway. Problem is that Vista consumes the laptop battery for nothing. Basically the number of Vista copies sold is very close to the number of Vista copies preinstalled. I know many who have bought laptops with Vista preinstalled and switched to XP or Linux shortly after.
Even Google is using it :p

Best bet is to just get an iso of the dell copy of vista ultimate, requires no serial and shows up as a genuine copy with the new service pack, for those who are resorting to buying it…
33. a link would be nice
I waited a good two years to upgrade from Windows 2000 to XP Pro and I’m waiting a good two years to update to Vista, if ever. From a business aspect, there are SO many software compatibility issues there’s no way I’d even think about going Vista Business for my small business. XP is stable and works, I’m not changing!
Friends who are ‘latest version’ geeks were so unimpressed by Vista (stability for one thing) they went back to XP; so I bought my new computer solely on the agreement that it would be loaded with XP and not the Vista which was hyped as part of the seller’s deal. Don’t regret the decision.
My son runs two computers - XP on his ‘work’ unit and Vista on his home ent version. He says Vista runs his home theatre well but as an OS for serious work - forget it.
How bout 99 cent download on itunes?
LMAO, ChelseaBlue is a troll! paraphrase “Buy Vista Legitimately, it’s cheap (can be found on Ebay) and can run with vmware fine (best of both worlds)… But do it legally. WTF? Don’t you know buying something on Ebay, you can also risk receiving a pirated copy? HA!
I would not get Vista even if MS offered it for free with Office 2007… Oh wait. They did that already and I still didn’t get it. It’s a worthless peace of crap (if there ever was any). I won’t get or tell others to get something that was “co-authored” with the Intelligence Community. Besides my privacy, it is HIGHLY unstable, full of (STILL) incompatibilities for much of third party software and I don’t like the idea that the OS helps me think or tells me what to do (UAC). I had to DOWNGRADE 3 NEW systems with Vista Home Basic to XP for people who “heard” how bad it was.
I agree with #5
Worth quoting: “Having Windows Vista on your PC is like trying to run an orienteering course with someone kicking you in the crotch.”
@30 “ZERO advantage to using Vista over XP, period. Why bother upgrading?”
I think he meant downgrading!
^ True ture. I find no reason to upgrade. and hey Reuters, the pre craked version from BIE works .. with sp1 too. dont scare the kids !

XP working ok for me.
No need to update.
I recently acquired a batch of pc’s for my business, all loaded with XP, not Vista. No customers of ours have mentioned Vista. XP is a good operating system. MS have the strange idea of releasing an OS before final testing, thereby using early adopters as beta testers. It always amazes me that there are people enthusiastic and naive enough to pay for a new MS OS.
So, Lets speak by the numbers
Acer Aspire 5315 (comes with Vista home from factory)
CPU Celeron 540 1.86Ghz
Aquamark 3
GFX 660
CPU 6125
———-
Total 6257 : Vista home
GFX 891
CPU 8572
———-
Total 8470 : XP+SP2+updates until 12-20-07
Vista Benchmark
cpu 4.1
ram 4.5
gpu 3.1 aero
gpu 3.3 games
hd 5.1
——-
3.1
So we have 2000 points difference not to mention the price for the “new” OS with “kernel patch protection” (see wikipedia), and other “features” like increase startup time and not to mention that some new (or newbie) ms programmers rewrite the same code again. The NEW OS has to implement embedded virus protection, resource protection, abandon registry because it is not correspondence with files, it has permissions in every key like it is a file, it has many different types from string to binary, and because many setup put files inside keys, ms doesn’t decide yet where is the right place for files. Some goes to windows, some to registry some to the application folder, some try to hide to anywhere, and has a file system based in relation database. Today one may seek the entire disk just to find one file and even in RAM takes too much time with thousand of files. Is a toy and expensive one.
Second example from a different laptop
Aquamark 3
Vista XP SP2 (no updates)
GFX 321 546
CPU 5409 6048
———- —-
Total 3128 5016
I test them several times. It has nothing to do with low end onboard graphics cards. I also test a desktop class pc with normal mid range class VGA card. The result is the same. I don’t tweak any OS before the benchmark test. No “other” programs are running. Only OS, drivers, Aquamark.
come on,
best internet browser is by far firefox
best desktop effects are done through compiz-gnome
best 1st person shootout is urbanterror
