Microsoft confirms: Vista SP1 not until March

Microsoft may have soothed the angst of the service pack hungry masses by releasing Vista SP1 to manufacturing, but users won’t be able to actually download it until mid-March at the earliest, company officials said Monday. During beta testing for Vista SP1, Microsoft found that some device drivers were causing problems on systems with SP1 installed. Although the issues can be fixed by uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers, Microsoft decided this would be too complicated for most users. As a result, Microsoft will spend the next month hunting for additional problematic device drivers, said David Zipkin, senior product manager in Windows Client Group.”With drivers, we wanted to make sure when folks upgrade to Vista that they have a smooth experience,” Zipkin said.

In mid-March, Microsoft plans to release Vista SP1 in 5 languages — English, French, Spanish, German and Japanese — through Windows Update and the Download Center, Zipkin said, adding that Microsoft will ensure that SP1 isn’t pushed out to PCs that have the aforementioned drivers installed. In April, Microsoft will begin auto updates of Vista SP1 to users who’ve chosen this option, and will also release the rest of the language specific versions of Vista SP1, Zipkin said. Microsoft has handed off the final Vista SP1 bits to its OEM partners, and if testing goes well, they’ll soon begin building new PCs based on Vista SP1 images. Microsoft has also begun pressing Vista SP1 DVDs for its retail and volume licensing customers.

Vista SP1 RC Refresh 2 6001.18000.080118-1840 Standalone Offline Install Package BT Download

Windows Vista SP1 RC Refresh 2 is probably the closet version to the RTM release of Service Pack 1 for Vista. There even many forums and blogs that dubbed Vista SP1 RC Refresh 2 with build number 6001.18000.080118-1840 as the RTM version, mainly due to the fact that Vista Service Pack 1 is now officially called only “Service Pack 1″, without version number, and the desktop does not carry and plant with “Evaluation Copy” watermark anymore.

sp3 is second quarter of 2008. Why would you need to install it? Its a free update to XP. Obviously if you did not pay for XP then you’ll probably have to wait for a WGA crack. I on the other hand, did pay for it so no problems :P

The more interesting information is the release of Server 2008,i bet this will be more fast and stable than Vista, just like Windows 2003 was to XP. Microsoft continues their trend to produce their best operating systems in the server line and using the consumer line for beta testing and bug hunting their server code. In case you never tried Windows 2003 as a workstation including games, you are really missing the best OS Microsoft had pulled out, i had used it before i migrated to Vista64 for 3.5 years, its faster and more stable than XP ever was,in everything. I hope Server 2008 continues this way.

@38 isn’t it what Apple does every time it releases a new OS? forces you to buy a new (overpriced) computer?

you’re the best example of what a Mac fan is. an idiot who thinks he knows about computer because he overpaid for hardware and software… Oh wait I forgot, it’s to not give money to the Evil Microsoft.. wait.. isn’t Jobs worse than Gates? Didn’t you guy see that yet? Oh nvm it’s because you are some brainwashed sect-like worshiper.

I don’t like either but I have to recognize that, at least, Gates gives money and does a lot for charities. something Jobs does not do.

I find Vista to be pretty stable now, I had issues initially in early 2007, to be honest on my machine now its performing better than XP or any other MS OS I’ve used. Lets face it Win98/Me was the worst OS ever, XP was like a godsend back then, Vista is a step forward from XP, the only issue I have is its not a big enough step forward. Obviously there are people who have had genuine problems, but “Vista sucks” “Mac rules” comments are made by people who know nothing about computers.

Vista ultimate (with aero) runs great for me on a sempron 3100 (1.8Ghz)/1GB RAM/geforce7600GS

Moving from XP, i did not feel my pc becoming more sluggish…
Just accept that vista works differently than XP: with XP i had 700MB of free RAM. Great, but did it help launching programs/opening windows faster? No.
Have 450MB of free RAM on vista, but my windows do open slightly faster, and the overall experience is a bit smoother.
And i really that the more powerful the sytem is, the more difference you’ll feel.

And the interface is so much better, especially with bigger screens =)
Also nice improvement on the fonts over xp

I really can’t understand people that keep saying vista is crap and not very stable,I have been running vista since it came out and honesty I think it is more stable than xp,especially the 64 bit version,I think with vista if you have a crap pc vista will run like crap but if you have a fairly newish pc with core 2 duo or quad core Q6600 with at least 2 or more gigs of ram,and a desent brand motherboard like asus or gigabyte, then vista is going to run really nice and stable.

A while ago I tried installing vista onto an older pc that had a pentium 4 3ghz with 1 gig of ram,and I have to say that vista really did run like crap, but that’s because it’s just not made for the older systems,I have 3 newish pc’s in my home and they all run like a dream with vista, because they all have desnt parts in them,2 of them have core 2 duo E6750 and 2 gigs of ram and the 3rd pc has the Q6600 quad core with 4 gigs of ram.

  58. philips14c
    February 6th, 2008 | 07:34

As long there is free ram in your system Vista will use it for caching purposes! If an application require more ram then Vista will free some ram for it! This is how Vista is supposed to work! Why not use that extra ram? I have 3Gb of Ram and almost all my physical memory is used! Its better to use internal memory and not the harddrive! Btw: multi-core cpu’s also help Vista alot!
