maVen kingpin Geremi Adam is on the run from police

Last month we reported that Geremi Adam, producer of some of the highest quality pirate movie copies ever seen on the Internet, had been caught and had been ordered to appear in court in January. Adam, aka ‘maVen’ had other ideas – and has disappeared.

Between 2004 and 2006, Geremi Adam, delighted the movie piracy scene with some of the highest quality Telesync movies ever seen. From ‘The Bourne Supremacy’ and ‘Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire’ through to ‘Spongebob Squarepants’ and plenty of other titles, the work of ‘maVen’ set a very high standard for quality pirated movies.

Following an FBI investigation into ‘maVen’, his file was handed to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) in April 2006. By September of the same year, Geremi Adam was arrested by police outside a Montreal theater after ‘camming’ the movies ‘How to Eat Fried Worms’ and ‘Invincible’. They seized his laptop and other equipment but later released him. A month later he was arrested again outside another theater.

Facing a $25,000 fine and six months in jail, Geremi Adam was ordered to appear in court on 30th January. Clearly unimpressed by the prospect of being locked up and/or bankrupted, he failed to appear in court and has gone on the run.

“We have a warrant and the police officers will try to find Mr. Adam,” said federal prosecutor Yacine Agnaou in a statement. “When he is found, he will be mandated to appear in court.”

Meanwhile, outside the court a demonstration was taking place by a group calling themselves ‘Hors-d-Oeuvre’ who say that ‘maVen’ is being unfairly treated and that all media should be available on the Internet for free. “Free Geremi!” they chanted in unison.

Fortunately for Adam, he committed the alleged offenses before new tough legislation was introduced to punish movie cammers caught in Canada. He will likely escape the severe punishment of 2 years in prison, a fate awaiting fellow cammer, Louis-Rene Hache. RCMP Staff Sgt. Noel St-Hilaire said: “Unfortunately at the time there was no legislation that forbid anyone from filming in a cinema. There’s not much we could do then other than issue a warning.”

Although not turning up at court is likely to inflame the situation, it’ll be interesting to see if the mounties are prepared to put any serious effort into ‘getting their man’ in this instance.

Yeah, I saw this story earlier tonight on the news. It’s tough for us Canadians to pirate, according to the woman who said that on the news. Canadian Police spend more time tracking pirates, then American Police. How do they find this kind of stuff out?

Movies should be avalible for free on the internet! How are we saposse to watch movies that aren’t released in our city/country? There are tons of good Canadian movies that you Americans will enjoy. But you can’t watch them, because you don’t live in Canada. Thats where pirating comes in. Pirating should be legal.

    SUPPORT MAVEN!!!

If pirating was legal, it would open up a ton of new file sharing servers and networks, making it easy for EVERYONE to pirate movies and music. If this was so, every label and production company would go out of business by the end of the year.

So no, it should not be legal. It’s fine the way it is – not every idiot with a computer should be able to pirate.

Have some common sense. Nice thought, but it would never work.

If you kill someone or are accused of a SERIOUSLY HEINOUS crime, then running may be an option. But if you are faced with 6 months in a Canadian jail and $25,000……… its time to face the music not run like a little b1tch.

You are only going to make it worse on yourself by running, in the USA running on a misdemeanor charge is not a huge deal but it will definitely piss the judge off and he is always the one that decides penalty length in non capital cases. I would imagine the same or close to it holds true in Canada.

Only time you run is when it cannot get any worse. Running on a misdemeanor is always a bad idea. Fugitive is not a fun way to live, police always looking for you so you cannot get pulled over, make an official report to the police, get in any car accident, etc, etc, etc. Its just not a fun way to live. Time to suck it up like a man and face the music.

@#17-The only little “b1tch” I see here is you. Suck it up like a man? For camming a damn movie? Let me tell you something slick. It takes a bigger pair than you can ever hope to grow to cam movies on a regular basis. The fact that maVen has no desire to go to jail for such a trivial “crime” speaks more for his common sense than to any lack of “manhood”. Easy to talk trash when you’re not in the situation and hiding behind your keyboard. A little respect and support would be in order instead of running off at the mouth like a punk.

You people dont realize how much maVen has done for the scene and what a huge win it was for the government to stop him. He was responsible for a large portion of the releases we’ve all enjoyed.

You should all hope and pray that he is able to get back to what he loves to do soon. Once he is back he will teach those movie studios not to screw with the scene. We’ll bring all of those studios to their knees and put them out of business for good.

Listen i don’t personaly know maven but i’m sure if he was a bad guy they would have kept him in jail. There are far worse crimes in this world. I hope he gets through this mess. After reading The Canadian Press, it appears that I have never committed the same crime as maVen, as I have never sold a movie online to make money like this thief has:

Adam is facing two counts under the law of knowingly distributing copyrighted material – pirated Hollywood films – on the Internet.

Police allege Adam sold the films under the alias of Maven, with the pirated flicks destined for sale on the web and on Canadian streets.

Each camcorded film likely fetched Adam anywhere between $300 and $1,000, the RCMP has said.

The RCMP says it was tipped off by the FBI, who flagged him as having a reputation on the web for putting together an above average product.

    Who needs theaters anyway.

Studios, just ask $5 for a legal copy of a movie and let the postman deliver it.
The studios would be rich, instead of those theater managers, who ask a criminal amount of entrance fee and snacks here in my country.

eg. 11,6$ entrance fee for the movie Sweeney Todd, and an extra 7.35$ for a coke and some chips.
19$ per person for a flick and some food. Thats what i call criminal.

  70. CopsOnHorseback-LOL
    February 13th, 2008 | 08:21

Yeah, stand outside a single theater and hand out money. Thats a HUGE base he’s reaching. I so wish I could teabag you biatches. I have no idea how it works in Canada but in the US if you skip on your court date you just lose the money you put up for the bail/bond. You don’t get added time. So if Maven didnt mind losing a few bucks for the bail he’s not losing much by taking off. If he gets caught now he’ll be in the same boat as if he appeared.

@49 Tell daddy to stop charging $10 for a soda, clean up the theater so i don’t have to sit in soda and step in gum, and tell him to start showing foreign films. Until then, I’ll stick to torrents. And on a side note, I stopped going to theaters long before torrents for the reasons listed above. So either which way your dad can gargle my jizz.

First of all, if he was handing out money in the theater to allow people to see films for free, he would not want to reach a HUGE base, because that would cost him more.

And jumping bail in the US is a criminal offense that can result in additional punishment.

And not all Canadian police are on horseback, plenty have modern cars just like in the US. Jerk.

Atleast thats whats i heard about him before, hardly anything worth “hero” status being greedy and making a living on other peoples work.

Thats sure as hell not what i would do or promote, and it has certainly nothing similar with being a internet pirate and what we are doing..

But an organization calling themselves Hors-d-Oeuvre says Adam is being wrongfully targeted and that movies as well as other entertainment should be distributed for free.

About 20 rowdy supporters picketed outside the courthouse, calling the charges against him unjust and shouting “Free Geremi!”

When asked about the property rights of people who create those products, Guillaume Beauvais shouted “We don’t care.”

“What we want is access to products at the lowest price possible,” Beauvais said.

Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment announced in November that they entered into a partnership with the largest video distributor in China.

Knowing that relatively few can afford to pay, or are willing to pay, $15 for a movie, Fox plans to sell its movies on DVDs for as little $2.25 – $3.75 – still more than double the going rate which can be $1 or less.

The move by Fox comes on the heels of similar efforts announced by Warner Bros. last year.

No, genius. The story says that people in China are unwilling to pay $15 for a movie, because they are able to get them for $1 or less. They are unwilling to pay full price because they face no punishment for buying the $1 illegal copy.

So, since the studio can’t change the laws in China, they have to change the price in China. They can’t afford to keep receiving $0 per movie, so they are going to try and get $2.25 per movie.

In normal countries, we do face punishment for illegal copies, just like maVen is finding out. That is why things are different over here than in China. We are civilized people, they are a billion thieves running around looking for rice.

    *sigh*

all media should be free – the government could charge a relatively tiny additional tax on everyone, and hand the proceeds to an independant body whose job it would be to monitor downloads and then distribute the money to artists/film studios/whatever proportionately based on popularity. it would easily be implemented, the “creative industries” would make more money, and the consumer would be free to be a little more experimental in their tastes – everybody wins. they could still sell hard copies at full price, on the basis that most people will buy something if they really really like it – we’re all suckers for capitalism and ownership.

i just feel sorry for maven. hes going to be stuck living on the run indefinitely, with all the paranoid over-shoulder-looking thats involved with that. sucks that someone who was providing such an awesome service is being hunted by authorities who would obviously like to make his life more miserable than they are currently legally allowed to.

  86. ZonaJona
    February 13th, 2008 | 08:47

It’s probably because Fox isn’t as big in China as it is here. All their movies are american-made, so they probably want be able to sell it to whoever they can over there. Just a thought, but not sure. There’s still alot of greed, being that it costs them almost nothing to package a damn DVD that is going to be obsolete in the coming years.

But seriously, they have to make SOME money. Pirate+legal=no reason to make blockbuster films. There will always be indie movies, but studios would be hesitant to throw a ton of money at blockbusters like Transformers, Spider-Man, Harry Potter, and a ton of others. After all, if they are putting millions into the movie, they are going to want millions back!

everyone would pay them. im not talking a huge increase – i said “tiny”. it neednt cost anyone more than what youd pay for a couple of cd’s a year, and in return you could download whatever you wanted, free, with no nagging guilt.

if everyone paid, then there would be a larger overall revenue than there currently is – since at the moment, some people buy tens of cds and dvds a month, while others dont buy any – if everyone was contributing a small amount, more profit would be made, and it would cost everyone less.

also it would create a more level playing field for independent music and film, since people wouldnt be more cautious, since theyd have nothing to lose by watching an unknown film or listening to an album by a band theyd never heard of – nothing except their time, that is.

i appreciate you dont want your taxes to go up (who does?) but this would be a huge saving in the long run for anyone who’s ever bought a (legal) cd or dvd in the past.

“I don’t pay anything now because I download all I need for free from the net.

Why would I consent to a tax to give studios more money?”

well, perhaps you wouldnt, but im guessing a larger majority would – the constant increase in money spent on fighting piracy ultimately comes out of the taxpayers’ back pockets, so either we keep fighting piracy, at ever spiralling cost, or we find a way to negate the need for piracy. if a tax for film/music/etc were introduced, you wouldnt be able to get around it (short of not being a registered person!) so you’d just have to pay it. no consent necessary…

point is, if the people who want a) free downloads, and b) clear consciences outweigh people like you, democracy has spoken… however, at the moment, people dont seem to be aware of any alternatives to the current business model.

  99. jprofet

Marcus I know what you are trying to say dude…. but there is a sympathy factor here, call it the robin hood effect, although in this case he sold the copies but not directly to the people pirating them on the net. kinda feel bad for the guy. I remember calling the wife from work to see if maVen had released a movie so we can watch that night. I;m sure alot of people had some sort of story. I’m not saying he won’t pay the price or even that he shouldn’t, i’m just saying that many wish he didn’t have to pay and i’m one of those people.

while your tax plan sounds like it could solve a problem, it would create too much trouble to be worth it.

for instance, in the US, the poor do not pay taxes. if you fall below a certain income level, you pay $0 in taxes. but the poor do buy movie tickets. so if we went with your plan, the poor would get movies for free, wheras now, they contribute to the industry.

i have been around for a while, and i know that if there is one thing people like less than movie studios, it is the poor.

  101. desperado
    February 13th, 2008 | 09:16

@jprofet – with a few basics of business economics you’ll understand what Cooper is driving at. The studios go the same way as any other big industry. They don’t practice cost-plus pricing, they charge what they believe the market will bear. The material cost of a DVD is peanuts, so when they sell at 2.99 in China, they are making a gross margin of 2.50 at the very least. Once they’ve remunerated the local distributor and covered their own SG&A (sales, general and administrative – it’s an accounting term) you can bet your bottom dollar that they’re still left with something in terms of profit. And believe it or not, a movie studio, like any other sane enterprise, will rather take something than nothing.
You could of course take a flight to China to buy one of these official top-quality DVD releases – the same way people drive 20 miles to save a tenth of a cent on a gallon of gas.

@#100- I was just about to comment on Hollywood’s record year. They made more profit last year than any other in history. A more correct statement would have been that they are constantly telling all who will listen that their industry is dying due to filesharing/piracy. They don’t see their industry as dying, far from it. They just want lawmakers and others to believe it. the record breaking profits of 2007 the studios raked in puts the lie to their claims of imminent doom and bankruptcy because of downloading. Scumbags.

They’ve never had it so good.

Look, I don’t know if he sold any of his cams or not. If he did, then that’s wrong. But the only source I’ve ever heard that from is the MPAA. I haven’t heard the police say that. They certainly didn’t charge him with doing that. I would tend to think that if there was any credible (no, MPAA press releases don’t qualify) evidence of such, that would be the charge pursued by the authorities and not a simple camming charge he’s facing.

I’m not defending maVen, I’m just trying to point out that here’s a guy who’s involved in something that we all participate in, one way or another. He got the attention and the heat brought down on him because of the high level of quality he brought to the party. Many, many people here have downloaded and enjoyed his releases. It’s just not right that there should be so many comments wishing him a lengthy jail term. “There, but for the grace of whatever, goes you……”

I have trouble believing Maven sold his rls’s. There wouldn’t have been so many around for download for free if he sold them. I mean, of course, the authorities are going to add on the “alleged” charge of selling in an attempt to help their cause. Maybe they figure “Pirates stick together. @Marcus

Why did they arrest Maven in the first place since there was no law for his crime at the time he was arrested. If you say the law is the law, then there was no grounds for the police to arrest him.

Running from the law isn’t a very smart thing to do. But there are many factors outside the rules that justify running. If you live in a totalitarian state where systematically people are getting removed or arrested for one reason or another. And rules are strict but people should look at it’s purpose and not follow the law by the letter. Also the law (police,da’s,judges, etc) can also be corrupt. So if these people would charge you with a crime that would be wrong also.

The law always being right is something that I don’t agree with and you should think about that.

I hope maVen didn’t sell his releases; he shouldn’t be making a profit like that, because that’s stealing and selling what’s not his. He payed for a movie ticket, I say he should be able to have a copy for enjoyment, buuuut then again I work in a movie theatre, and well we depend on our true patrons to see movies and pay for our theatre to continue with our service. And I haven’t seen any of maVen’s TS releases myself, I only watch pure dvdrips or dvdscreeners. And I don’t think he should have run from the law, but he did have a particularly large hand reaching into his wallet and taking a chunk of money out. Me, I get into theatres free most of the time because I get a free pass every 2 weeks with a free 2 person pass attached to my pay stub, but you can always ask for another pass and they’ll normally give it to you; so I get in all the time for free. I do believe that the theatre still gets money off of the passes though, so it’s all good.

so instead, we tell them that we like to work for $5 a day. this way, our government can make new deals with companies and promise them very cheap labor.

it is not a great solution, but it is better than a bullet in the head.

Whatever reason we try and say we download movies, games, music etc… the fact remains we are breaking the law. All those dipsh!its trying to say its basically for the good of mankind are living in a fooking dreamworld. Piracy is piracy except we dont get hung drawn and quatered nowadyas, we just get huge fooking fines and jail time. Me for one don’t give a sh!t, i take the risks like everyone else, but if I’m caught then guess what Im fooking guilty… no fooking grey area, no fooking protestors on my behalf… IM FOOKING GUILTY PLAIN AND SIMPLE and as such have to be prepared to face the consequences of my actions. Besides look at those girls… probably french canadian dykes on welfare anyway. Still run maven run, i need a few more releases before your bubbas b!itch as for the rest of the Free Movie Rights bandwagon… get a fooking job and stop complaining especially about quality, your not the one in the cinema with the camera taking all the chances, your the spotted d!ck type of guy living at home masterbating to animal porn, who cares if its bad, sound not right, picture too dark… ITS FOOKING FREE ! You want perfection go to the fooking movie or wait and buy the DVD otherwise shut the fook up and stop balling like a baby, after all you dont have to download it but if you do then your to blame for not reading the comments in the first place d!psh!its

you guys have to realize that most likely his sentence will be more than 6 months and the fine will be more than 25000. police say these things to calm the fugitive down so he can turn himself in! does nobody understand the law by now? i would say a 250,000 fine maybe more and 6-8 years in prison!! run for your life maVen!! and if you did make alot of money, use it to change your identity bro. or your second choice find yourself an expensive good lawyer ;) cheers and good luck..even tho i never downloaded your stuff

Wait, these guys don’t get paid a dime for releases, right? So he has thrown his life away for nothing?

    February 15th, 2008 | 10:15

I’m glad they’re catching these guys. I mean all the police should be going after people that actually steal company releases and not those that download them. They started it, we just enjoyed :P We’ve done no harm. I do say long live piracy since they’ll always be those ripping it for fellows like us and being on the run eventually. Amazing news no less.

Look I feel for maVens woes . But lets face it he had a chance to make a stand . A statement if you will for the torrent comunity . why run . get a lawyer and fight make a political call for change take this all the way to the supreme court to have our rights protected . Yes protected . we will lose our privacy if other countrys like the US can hand over IPs to the rcmp alowing them to identify us through loop holes in the laws here in Canada that protect our IPs for the most part . I’m sorry MaVen but your charges were a joke compared to what people can get now. He’s no hero folks , he could have been if he had,nt run . But now the new laws are set and little to no chance exsits to repeal them . Next time what rights to privacy will we lose . Will we become more like the home of the brave and land of the free . We need people to stand up and say no we will not be like our friends to the south . where it has become the home of the brave land of the watched . MaVen please stop running !!!!!! Find a good lawyer and make as big a stink about civil privacy and the such that you can . Yes you will most likely still be fined and maybe even lose . But man if you read these comments from your supporters you can tell that to some of them your a hero . You and I know the truth about that though. Show these people that you can be one . make a stand for us . For all of us here in the great white north

maVen was a good friend of mine. Most of what he did brought a smile to his face when he would tell us about it. He really was a charismatic being, with his heart on his sleeve.

Unfortunately, he just died last sunday of a morphine overdose after his jail stay.
