Marco Polo And Torae – Double Barrel 2009-YSP

Canadian super producer Marco Polo (who has worked with Kool G Rap and Kardinal Offishall) and Brooklyn MC, Torae (pronounced Tori), are set to drop their first collaboration album titled Double Barrel June 2nd. When you listen to the album you get a sense why they named Torae’s debut album what they did. “He’s bringing the hardest production that he can bring, I’m bringing the hardest rhymes I can bring; together its like a double barrel blast,” says Torae.

Is this album a classic? No, but it is pleasantly surprising to hear a fresh new rapper with a story to tell. Does Torae sound different like the greats do? No, but, the dude can legitimately rap and after reviewing a lot of annoying auto-tuned rappers, Torae is a breath of fresh air (there is not a hint of auto tuner on this album).

He sounds like a mix of Gangstarr and a lost member of the Wu-Tang Clan. His lyrics are good, his flow is choppy, but still OK and it is the type of album that is good for a road trip. The songs do sound similar but they are, at the least, pretty good. It is the type of album where half-way through you will be bobbing your head and say to yourself, “Hey, this is pretty good stuff.”

Other lyricists have taken notice to the collaboration of a top producer and ambitious rapper. Double Barrel features a plethora of rappers, including M.O.P.’s Lil’ Fame among others. This album is directed towards true hip-hop/rap fans. It probably won’t set the charts on fire but like Marco says, “We’re not trying to take it back, we just wanted to make an album that knocks.”

“I think the sound of the album is not the most popular or trendy, but we’re going to crash the party,” says Torae, “ We’re coming in with this sound and we’re coming in doing what we want to do.”

Sounds like a true rapper, not out to make a buck, but to honor the art of rap.

    Hey, there is no filter for racist comments here?

    @ 17, Selective Realism – 'black' is a color. It's a normal color. So how do you suggest we filter out this word?

    Try thinking sometimes. It helps with not looking like an idiot

    ''black' is a color. It's a normal color.'

    No, black is the absence of color, as in the abyss that you likely refer to as your brain.

    'Try thinking sometimes. It helps with not looking like an idiot'

    Try reworking that quote until it makes sense to others. The way it reads now you appear to be uneducated and illiterate.

    LOL @ JJ….

    That comment really shows how ignorant you are. "Double Barrel" refers to both of them as a collective duo, in which Marco Polo is not black. So what were you saying again?

    I can't believe people are still racist. That is ignorance, there is only one race and that is human. Cultures, yes but cultures mix across many skin tone lines. Someone of every skin tone likes hip hop, someone from any variety of skin tone likes anything and everything. Ignorance is also in every skin tone so you see the ignorance isn't skin tone or "color" related.

    Our make-up as humans is based more on environment, I have yet to hear a scientist say "oh we found the -insert your favorite color here- gene that makes this color more superior".

    The only thing that is true is that the human race still has a major problem with ignorance. They need to find the gene for this…

    We aren't born bigots, you were made that way or learned to be that way or choose to be that way, either way stop proving to the rest of the civilized world how poorly your mind works and go get an education.

    Now I want to use # 17's, Selective Realism's, logic.

    Smashing Pumpkins = Vandals
    .38 Special = gun advocates (sound familiar…)
    Greatful Dead = Suicide advocates
    Everclear = Alcohol use advocates
    Rancid = Rotten meat supporters
    Gorillaz = Racists term for blacks
    White Stripes = Obviously not supporters of other colors…

    We could do this for days, how's that logic now?

    really thinks that the world uses forums, comment boards and anything else to communicate exactly their level of ignorance, specifically the sad sad quality of their world.

    I feel sorry for JJ and any other posters who are scared to write their real name and stand behind their pen.

    Step up and be a man or woman like your scared words do.

    Go COP that duckdown ish fast…
