Man’s embryo successfully cloned in US
This might be a little too much offtopic piece of news but it’s such an achievement I’m sure most of you will find it interesting anyway: US scientists say they have produced embryos that are clones of two men, in an attempt to produce patient-specific stem cells. Researchers removed DNA from donated human eggs, and replaced it with DNA from the skin cells of two volunteers. They produced embryos with genetic material that matched the men’s, but did not go on to extract stem cells. The team at Stemagen Corporation in La Jolla, California, says the work could be an important step to developing embryonic stem cells for patients. They produced five embryos called blastocysts from 25 donated eggs. DNA fingerprinting proved that at least one of these was a clone.
“We’re the first in the world to take adult human cells and then document that in fact we were able to clone embryos from them,” lead researcher Dr Samuel Wood told the BBC. He said the embryos were destroyed in the process of verifying they were clones, but they were now working on creating stem cell lines. Dr Lyle Armstrong of Newcastle University is one of a handful of other researchers who have made cloned human embryos using a technique known as nuclear transfer pioneered in Dolly the sheep. Unlike the US team, the Newcastle group used DNA from embryonic rather than mature tissue. Dr Armstrong said the US study showed that the objective of using cells from an adult person to make individual stem cells might one day be possible. Are you ready for Me, Myself v2.0?

This is a really enhanced achievement.
People often argue about whether or not to do these kind of tests, but eventually they’ll come up with solutions which are ideal for medical purposes, which is why I fully support this kind of research.
People who are the victim of accidents involving burnt skin will get the oppertunity to have their own cells grow into new skin for them one day, so they can be operated and look and move normal again.
I say, hurray. \o/

I agree with the Americans here, stem cell research though offering cures to for err… pretty much everything is clearly the devils work.

I didn’t like the film “The Island” as much as I liked “Clonus” a.k.a. “Parts: The Clonus Horror” , the inspiration for the Michael Bay film.
“The Island” is just a multi-million dollar remake of “Clonus” with the ‘Michael Bay Mandatory Car Chase’ (patent pending) and an upbeat happy ending.
I haven’t the first clue about what any of this means, but I know that it is the work of the devil. Praise bees!!

All you people that say leave mother nature alone, I hope you dont use ANY drug or medicine then. Thats the entire reason behind medical science, improving the lifespan and curing disease.
Its not like scientists are going to pump out human clones using stem cell research, but the possibilities in curing disease is endless.
Even simple things like growing skin for burn victims is possible. I cant believe this is even in debate on if it should be advanced.

The clone would be a dud, it won’t have the same thoughts and memories, now if we figured out how to clone memories and restore them to another brain or chip that would be truly amazing. Then again I guess we have communism for that

The current generation of people are all going to be developing new and unusual diseases/virus’ that will probably take decades to even see a cure (if even that) while we could have that all of it solved taking on cell reproduction through cloning.

Stem cell research is worthless, only the rich can benefit from any of the results. One treatment would probably cost at least a million dollars because of the high amount of effort and expertize it takes to cultivate the materials
Not only are they using embryonic stem cells, but they neglected to mention the DNA was made from TWO MEN, … in other words they’re paving the way for homosexual reproduction, the thing I want to make illegal. Of course I’ve gotten zero responses yet from The Man.

Easy for you to say…your not paralyzed from the chest down..I AM!! Stem cell research is about the only possible treatment/cure for spinal cord injuries that exists. They are cloning for stem cells to heal/cure people, NOT to make clones of actual people. Pure ignorance.

They already sell genetically modified crops. Companies have been modifying plants so that they produce sterile seeds. Why? Because they don’t want farmers to use part of their crop for next year’s seeds. They want farmers to BUY all their seeds.

@45: Scientists have managed to quite literally reanimate a dead heart from a dead rat without even using stem cells. Do your research man! Cloning is not only possible, it could very quickly become a very basic procedure once all this ethics red tape is taken care of. Getting cells to reproduce and DNA to combine is not hard at all – it is what they are programmed to do on the most primal of levels. Once we figure out the finer details and perfect a process tissue cloning will become as common as dental fillings.

It’s cool they can do that but really though, there messing with human nature and it’s gona backfire at some point. You figure they can do this then why isn’t there cures for cancer and aids? Men do not have embryos, women are so far the only ones capable of carrying an embryo. (Beside the petri dish mentioned here)
