Manhunt 2 remains Adult only

The Manhunt 2 saga has officially come to a peaceful resolution. Yesterday, Take-Two confirmed reports that some of the revisions made to secure an M-for-Mature rating for its horror actioner were reversible using a hacked PlayStation Portable. Today, though, the Entertainment Software Rating Board announced that it will stand by the M rating it issued to the revised Manhunt 2. “We have investigated the matter and concluded that unauthorized versions of the game have been released on the Internet along with instructions on how to modify the code to remove the special effects,” read the statement issued by the ESRB.

“Once numerous changes to the game’s code have been made and other unauthorized software programs have been downloaded to the hardware device which circumvent security controls that prevent unauthorized games from being played on that hardware, a player can view unobscured versions of certain violent acts in the game.” As noted by Take-Two in its defense yesterday, the ESRB said that the content was fully disclosed as being present at the time of being granted an M-for-Mature rating. The ESRB also delineated the difference between the unobscured violence mod and the notorious Hot Coffee mod to Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, which was accessible through similar means. I got nothing against violence in games, but Manhunt pushes it far beyoned the acceptable level in my eyes…

I would have to see the violence, to make a judgement but It’s still a game and discernable from real life.

I can’t see this traumatising kids anymore than some ‘Plastic Surgery Live’ reality program, which are all over the TV.

I got it on PSP and it’s really entertaining. Give it a try if you can.

Manhunt [the original] went through its issues as well. As soon as it was released it was constantly spoken of, due to the ways you could kill someone I easily dub it a mature oriented game.

The problem with these games are not the games themselves, its the fact of whom will get their hands on them. I went into GameStop around 1 month ago to purchase SilverFall on PC, this kid no older than 12 walks in and walks out with all the GTA titles for PS2 and the PSP versions. Uncalled for.

Gory violence? Yes. In the first Manhunt you could kill people with a variety of weapons, including nail guns, plastic bags for the more personal effect, shards of glass to slice throats etc. It was not an extremely fast paced game at all, but you needed to take your time for the kills to be done right.

As I said, definitely mature oriented games. People always complain about what is acceptable in a game, but yet a 17 year old kid can go to the movie theatre to watch Saw IV? Ignorant.

and what do u propose? check for id?

… Yes actually. I dont need my 12 yr old nephew going into a video store and buying the Saw collection. Guess what? He wouldnt be able to do it. They have to either check for ID or the system will ask if they are over 17 to purchase the videos.

The exact same should be done for video games with mature or adult oriented content. Just my opinion.

Wait a sec – shouldn’t the title be “Manhunt remains M for Mature”? Adults Only (AO) is another, steeper rating, that that ESRB decided not to give…

…this brings back memories of the first controversial game they tried to ban: Barbarian for C64. The sound when you chopped the opponents head off, and the little green goblin kicking the bouncing head… Now that was funny. :)

Played the game for a bit today and the controls are awful, it’s just a bad game.

I’ve had the beta since it released, and I really liked it, especially the environment kills. And most of the kills are blocked as the camera is shaky.
I still need to beat the original Manhunt.

    @Some_Random_Dude
Yes, those games are so good.

It’s my belief that Rockstar probably did this one on purpose, being that they made it so easy–uncensoring the game is as simple as deleting a few text strings from some ini files.

title: “Manhunt 2 remains Adult only”

body: “the Entertainment Software Rating Board announced that it will stand by the M rating”

What? It remains as “Mature”, the title is misleading… If nothing else, the ESRB is doing the right thing, but Rockstar leaving in the AO content is definitely circumventing the ratings system…

“Rockstar leaving in the AO content is definitely circumventing the ratings system”

Not really, they are just doing what any other media producer would do. It’s no worse than blurring out faces or putting black squares over bits you’re not meant to see on tv.

I still fail to tsee the point of a game that is based purely around gratuitious violence. I played manhunt 1 for like 30 mins, got too bored with it. Once you get over all the killing it is actually quite a pathetic game.

Release the game AS IT IS meant to be. It’s just a videogame, I hate these rating systems! In Manhunt you are suppose to be able to do sh!t that is XXX rated and in an extremely gory way.. Same with GTA and other games.. I just wish they included children and animals you could torture and rape and dig up graves and skullf*ck their heads and so on.. it would be perfect. Hostel and Saw the game series would be awesome!! REMEMBER: it is just pixels or actually 1011101010101010101010, ones and zeros put in a “the right order” that brings you this stuff on your screen.

PS. What I mean with children and animals and all else living (even zombies and aliens) in a VIDEOGAME is that it is the players choice if you want to leave them alone, run them over or whatever is possible…

Jone 9 . the game never hit the stores dude the only leak was in internet straight from inside the company and that was only for about 2 or 3 days i have the link from rlslog and its at 98% for nearly 2 months now soo u couldn’t possibly bought it :) o and the leak was the ps2 version only.
Now to the point about the pc release its about 80% sure that its going to be AO rating:) the issue was only about the consoles versions Sony’s policy about AO games is NO AO games and we don’t have to tell about Microsoft but in pc toootal deferent story.:P

Rofl cry. Manhunt doesn’t push it too far at all, the Wii version of Manhunt 2 is horribly entertaining, and I’ve already played through it twice.

The ESRB are nothing but fascist pig-f u c k e r s and they can officially suck my green muppet balls.

All this is back-door censorship. If the establishment wants to censor a game they give it the AO porn rating so stores won’t carry it.

Oh and yet torture-porn like Saw IV and Hostel 2 get R-Ratings and I see people with 7 y/o in the theater. So those little kids can see women tortured to death but I can’t bash some computer generated gang members brains and enjoy it in full hi-res detail because some idiot might let their kids play it. What part of M FOR MATURE don’t these people get?

I love Manhunt, Soldier of Fortune 1 & 2, Kingpin and Postal. They don’t make enough truly realistic violent games.

Oh yeah and it’s ok for kids to play the ARMY’s propaganda game since it’s TEEN rated. No one writhes in pain, or is wounded. There’s no blood. All the killing is neat, clean and painless. What a great message for our children!
