Major US inet providers join anti child porn pact

Two of the largest Internet service providers, AT&T and America Online, have reached agreements with the state attorney general, Andrew M. Cuomo, to eliminate access to newsgroups where child pornography is posted and purge their own servers of child pornography Web sites. The deal, announced on Thursday morning, follows agreements reached last month with Verizon, Sprint and Time Warner Cable. The attorney general will also ramp up the pressure on more providers to sign on with a new Web site, nystopchildporn.com, where consumers can download letters to send to their providers “that have failed to make the same commitment to stop child porn,” according to a news release issued by Mr. Cuomo’s office.

The deals are significant, because newsgroups have been a somewhat forgotten corner of the Internet where child pornography has flourished. But the agreements will go only so far in eliminating the scourge of child pornography on the Web — it does not prevent customers from accessing Web sites on other servers not controlled by those companies. “These agreements with two of the nation’s largest I.S.P.’s to eradicate child porn websites from their servers tighten the noose around this despicable trade,” Mr. Cuomo said in a statement. “I call on all I.S.P.’s to quickly adopt the reforms in our code of conduct.”

Good. Fkn pervs should get their nuts cut. The authorities should focus more on stuff like this instead of piracy.

This is a complete and utter load of crap – this has nothing to do with CP, but saying its CP provides the necessary knee jerk reaction that these guys are looking for.

This is about censorship, control and regulation of the internet. The net is the ultimate gateway for free speech and it scares businesses and politicians alike – so they will work together to limit YOUR access to it claiming they are doing it for the sake of ’society’. This is no different than any other piece of legislation aimed at controlling technology so that only those in power can receive the full benefit of it.

If you are one of those people that has the knee jerk reaction, all that I am saying will make no sense. However, if not, then you understand the implications of this all.

I fully support all ISPs signing on to stop child pornography. I’m worried, however, that the government is going to use this at a starting point to attack all types of websites they don’t like, including sites like rlslog.

just wondering wasn’t this here a few weeks ago?

#5 ist completely right it’s just another excuse like the evil terrorists to take the internet’s freedom. “Won’t _somebody_ think of the children???” that’s just a knockout argument; how can you argue against it?
Where i live at (germany) children have starved from pure neglect and neighbours had even informed authorities (very brave imho) but afterwards they knew nothing and had “acted properly”. If they have too many people in their children-protection-department they should rather go after “real” abuse like that instead of some picture traders …

It won’t change anything. Just look at tor: TorPedo is celebrating it’s 1/2 birthday and the other sites are running as usual. It’s just some publicity gag to get attention that will always affect people who have nothing to do with it.

  13. Here's an idea...
    July 11th, 2008 | 02:49

Maybe the governments should point their finger in the direction of getting the world economy back on track, gas prices down and quit sending care packages to other countries in the form of bombs and missiles.

    Just an idea…

I really don’t see how this will help anything. If someone wants to upload something to the Web, Usenet, whatever, they’ll find a way. If they manage to delete a web site or a newsgroup another will take its place. You can bet on it. What makes this so useless, is that this only applies to U.S.-based servers. Who’s to stop a child pornographer from setting up a server elsewhere. And this applies to any digital data. If someone wants to show you something and there’s an audience out there who wants to see it, both parties will find a way. At best, all this will do is make child pornography just a bit harder to find. Which is not a bad thing, but I already see that this is being used as an excuse to delete sites and newsgroups that aren’t even being used for child pornography. (According to the previous poster mentioning Verizon deleting all alt.* groups.)

This is just like the claim of terrorism. Create a “phantom menace” and use it to police, in this case the Internet. People’s rights are being subverted right in front of their faces.

I happen to know that the 2 most popular Usenet providers have forms that will allow you to report child pornography on their servers and they’ll delete it accordingly. Once government and megacorporations get their way, the next step is net neutrality. Which is what they really want to get rid of. Open your eyes, people.

This bill has nothing to do with CP and everything to do with piracy. Their using CP to work their agenda since every ISP is eventually going to comply cause if they don’t everyone will say, “you didn’t comply? you must support child porn”

  36. Eric
    July 11th, 2008 | 04:52

@5 – Exactly the first thing that came to my mind, I don’t have anything against anyone wanting to stop child porn… but if they succeed in that, then what’s next? Newsgroups with music downloads? Movies? Copyrighted images? This is just the first step in a long line of bad things to come if they do succeed.

Even if stopping child porn would be good, they won’t be able to “STOP” it. It may be blocked by whatever ISPs, but people will find a way to get it, and give it. They have been trying to stop piracy for a very long time now, and anyone who would believe that this would work any better than stopping piracy… should probably go back to school and look for a class that teaches common sense. (That’s something that people should really put some effort into, teaching people common sense when they are growing up.)

  37. Günther
    July 11th, 2008 | 05:35

Child porn is just like piracy in that you can’t stop it by trying to force it down.

The Scene itself, back in the very beginnings, used floppy disks mailed in the postal services to get it’s material around. Before the internet came to be and in its beginnings porn, child porn included, was transferred the same way. All they’re doing is making it a tad bit harder for people to get what they want.

You cant’ stop the transfer of information, ever.

It’s a quick and easy way for ISPs to stop providing usenet access.

About the pirate bay and the clickable CP – jesus christ, what the hell are they thinking? It’s not full blown CP, but where do you draw the line at what’s acceptable? Is a naked toddler dancing CP? I don’t think so, unless you get off on it.
Should the animation be up on a website for potentially a million people a week to see? Not at all. It’s a stupid, moronic thing to do and will give the authorities a big excuse to shut them down. Idiots. I’ve emailed them, doubt I’ll get a reply.

Quagmire FX, I’m sure TPB is fully aware of what those triangles lead to. They’re a site that has no problem hosting links to illegal material. The fact that those links are on there is a bit disturbing, but it doesn’t really surprise me. TPB has been constantly defiant when it comes to obeying the laws.

Yup, strategy for internet control this is.

They could not care less about child porn. If they did, they’d only actually “ban” the child porn groups, not full out ban every thing and everybody like they did.

It pains me to say, but the US is full of naive idiots. As long as there is some reality show on TV, or whatever other crap, they won’t wake up to smell the coffee.

Have fun, and enjoy the few seconds of free speech you have left. GG America, once great country who bent over to the power of a handful of corporations.

  74. Rekrul
    July 12th, 2008 | 08:12

Let’s not forget that by America’s definition, photos/videos of a 17 year old having sex is considered child pornography, which means that anyone looking at the stuff produced by Club Seventeen in Europe is guilty of accessing child porn. And what about all of Traci Lords’s old movies? They’re all child porn (except Traci I Love You) in America, even if they’re legal in other countries.

Besides, they said that they found “child porn” in something like 88 newsgroups and the ISPs reacted by deleting several hundred, if they didn’t just do away with newsgroup access completely.

I have AT&T and if they get rid of all the binary groups, I plan to call them and ask how much of a reduction I can expect to see on my monthly bill, since they’ll have eliminated a major portion of the service they provide. Never mind that their servers suck, it’s the principle of the thing.

people will believe ANY lie IF:

they are AFRAID it is true

    OR

they WANT IT to be true

so many freedom limiting laws are passed under the guise of protecting children.

“If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State.”
