Lucky and Flo not welcomed in Malaysia
We’ve been informing about the latest hi-tech method of finding illegal DVDs few months ago – Lucky and Flo are MPAA’s trained labradors which have way more success than any other method. But they have hard time in Malaysia now, because peddlers in this country literally full of pirated content don’t like them that much. During a recent raid on a shophouse in Petaling Jaya, Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry enforcement officers were taken aback when they found signs warning “Beware bulldog” and “Beware dog”. “The syndicates had been tipped off about the Labrador Retrievers’ lack of training in terms of self-defence as they had been taught only to sniff out optical discs. “By nature, the Labradors are not violent or hostile canines and are considered to be among the friendliest in the dog world,” said a ministry source. The ploy, however, worked only for a short while.

The enforcement officers took every precaution to ensure the safety of Lucky and Flo but once they were certain there were no other dogs around, they moved in with the canines. Enforcement officers proceeded to cut the shutters of the three-storey shophouse selling genuine DVDs and VCDs. Lucky and Flo went straight to work and sniffed out the location of the hidden pirated discs — in a locked metal container at the back of the shophouse. Once the container was cut open, the officers seized 2,000 pirated discs under the Copyright Act 1987. Meanwhile, it is learnt that the proposed local dog unit to combat optical disc piracy is expected to be ready for action next year. Lucky and Flo were brought to Malaysia by the MPA for a working visit. Since their arrival in March, the two Labradors have assisted enforcement officers in seizing about RM15 million ($5 million) worth of pirated optical discs and various paraphernalia nationwide.

Hi there, i’m living in malaysia and here, there’s a bounty on the dogs head. beside that, theu’re actually diong a tremendous job sniffing out piracy. Piracy should be free, i agree with that.
To bob rodney: They don’t eat dog in malaysia, corea, china, vietnam
but NOT MALAYSIA.
cheers and keep seeding.
I fail to see how these dogs help…unless they have some hidden psychic powers.
psychic dogs ?? dude you should be pitching pilots for the fox network, i think you’re on to a winner
What’s the smell of a DVD?
They should really nuke Asia. Nothing but bad things coming for us Westies.
How do they sniff out DVDs ?
Without asians we wouldn’t have cute asian girls to play with. Down with the nukes I say.
QuadrupelQ, are you for real?
How many % of your clothes are made in asia? And how about your computer or your cellphone?
yay for the dogs. people shouldn’t make millions out of piracy. i’m from Malaysia too. the problem here is the enforcers are quite helpless as they’re ‘allowed’ to only go after the small fish. they never touch the big guys. like this article says, they just raid shophouses etc, ie. they’re the bottom of the chain. sometimes the middle man got it too when storehouses were raided too. but where do these copyrighted cds came from? who made them huh? you never get that answer.

fool. some TSes were recorded in malaysia (cause i saw malay subtitles on it). we get to see some movies early than US release dates.
who cares.. most of us get our stuff off the net anyway.
tucker: Yep, we can get it for free, but e.g. in malaysia there are people profiting a lot money from piracy. Last time I was there pirate copies were sold even in normal shopping mall.

Apparently the dyes used in DVDs/CDs have different odours to them…wouldn’t know about it myself….I can’t smell a difference…
Kinda amusing though that there’s a bounty on those dogs. But I suppose it would be expected if ppl have lost $5 mil already….I know I’d be mad. I wonder if the dogs do get killed (could you say they’re “murdered”? jk) then what? MPAA is the kind of organization that will just train some more….
