    I agree with #5.

I want to see this movie simply because the Chinese government doesn’t want me to see it! I suggest everyone download and watch this movie, just to help fight censorship.

many movies are censored in different countries for many different reasons

paths of glory,,in france and germany for morale reasons and reputation

e.t. in sweeden for many years,(kids should trust parents, the value of the films
    were against family values)

le tambour, aka the drummer…cut in english canada,,no problem in french canada
the kid is supposed to represent a young germany, but not a kid,the censors
    did not get it…

my point is:think before blaming,,and walk a mile in someone elses shoes

Shortly before the end of 2007, the Administration issued a notice banning pornographic films—those that contain “rape, prostitution, and explicit sex”—from competing in festivals. Lost in Beijing (苹果), whose international version contains rape, prostitution, and explicit sex scenes (at least by mainland standards), competed at the 57th Berlin Film Festival last February. The film finally made it to screens after repeated tangles with the censors that led to a name change (it’s known as Apple in Chinese) and the deletion of about 20 minutes worth of footage.

This movie touched my heart. Only during this special social-transitional period of China, could such a story, such a “deal” happen. Somewhere in the middle, it felt like I was looking into a mirror.

Born and raised in China after China’s open-door policy and one-child policy, I am one of the millions of the special witnesses of this fast-changing new society. This is a country where no one has shouted long live whoever or whatever for a long time, and where everything changes so fast that there’s no way for anyone to really catch up. Why “special witnesses” you may ask, after China reshaped its social and economic structures, two generations were affected the most, my generation and my father’s. State owned companies that were run in traditional and socialist ways couldn’t survive the changes, left millions of employees out of job, only very few survived, since then “millionaire” is not a strange word to the Chinese anymore, but most people are still struggling, communism is long gone, with this hollowness in beliefs, all they wish for is that someday their children could fulfill the dreams they couldn’t have, and … that’s the story of my father’s generation for the last 20 years.

The young generation is divided into two groups ,one is people like me, grew up in the cities, mostly college educated, work in big cities as well like Beijing, dreaming of becoming rich practically every second, let face it, house, cars, getting married, supporting your parents, your wife’s parents, your children, and of course yourself…that kind of financial pressure is not something anyone or any couple could take off their minds easily.

The second group is young people from rural areas, poverty and lack of education certainly make it very hard for them to live up their dreams, some of them went extreme, for them the pursuit of happiness has become purely the pursuit of money. This dramatic story is partly about one individual of this group, I totally understand him, the system is far from mature, so much unfairness and confusion, “he” will take every possible chance to break out, even if that means he might end up with nothing but a tortured soul. “Lost in Beijing”, what a title, I’ve been living in this country for 25 years, still I alway feel lost.

I recommend this movie to anyone who’s interest in today’s China, or can relate to the story. This movie doesn’t show you all about what life is like in Beijing,or China for that matter, what it reveals is a dark corner of a soul, rather than just a dark corner of a society.

@36 - I agree with you. The situation is sad and the future of it looks very uncertain..I believe that without a spiritual life, if it is based only on material and sensorial searchs for happiness always leads to a dead end!!A kind of thirst that can never be quenched!! Good luck watchit…May you find your “Tao” .BTW, IT is not to be found for we live in it!!

    Thank you Dara(#43) and display(#47)!

@49,I guess the hand-held camera work is for creating a feeling of actuality, also it shows the restlessness and anxiety of the characters and the society.
