Still don’t get the whole 2 CD rule from the ’scene’ - blank dvd’s etc are cheap so cheap now. Are they ever gonna change this? who wants to swap discs in the middle of a movie or navigate their dvd player to the second file??

Not a bad movie tho, I was hammered when I watched it.

@4: I just use VirtualDub to mux them together and then I enjoy a better quality movie (compared to a reencoded DVD to 4.3GB, see http://www.doom9.net for more info) at 1/3 of the size. ;)

    @4
If your playing the video on a computer (or HTPC), just que up the files with a playlist. Yes, there is a short delay between the files but it’s really nothing to upset over.

Personally I use a modified Xbox with XBMC. It sees the two files (even without unpacking them) as one and plays them as such. Best standalone player you can get for stuff like this.

Obviously, it’s not much work to play 2 files or join them yourself, but why should thousands of people waste time on this if the releaser can do it without any additional efforts? Personally, I don’t know a single person who still uses CDs as his/her main choice of media storage and if such people exist, they probably don’t have any idea what words like ‘torrents’, ‘warez’, hell, even ‘WinRar’ mean. I agree that the scene should think of switching to a single file system. Whoever is living in the past, may try one of the choices mentioned above to split the files, not join them.

Uninstall all video codecs from your computer and install K-lite (free) full pack of codecs, about a player I think that BS Player is one of best choices considering quality of video and 5.1 audio and delay between discs is about 0.5 seconds and you wont even notice it. BS player can be found here http://www.rlslog.net/bsplayer-pro-v224954-multilingual-incl-keymaker-core/

    November 7th, 2007 | 16:56

Yeah but you don’t seem to get what I was saying. If most people use DVDs or even hard drives to store scene movie releases, wouldn’t it be wiser to stop using this obsolete method of splitting the files for CDs? I’m an advanced user who won’t have any problems watching 1.41MB splits destined for floppy drives, however the whole idea of supposedly advanced and progressive release scene being indefinitely stuck in the past strikes me as awkward. Anyway, no intent to start flame wars - just expressing my view on the topic raised by someone else’s comment.

Same as “shumz”… if anybody can post some Rapidshare links, it would be so nice ! Thanks in advance… ;)

@ cOtOm@s : How can you say that K-Lite + BS Player is the best deal to watch divx videos ? So much crap inside… especially the latest free version of BS Player.
Use instead the “Combined Community Codec Pack” + Media Player Classic or Zoom Player. Much more quality settings for your audio and video playback, and much more lighter CPU usage !
And if you like the all-in-one player… use “KMPlayer”, the best one !

  24. Mr. Know It All
    November 7th, 2007 | 17:17

    @Crow
If the scene had any clue what the hell they were doing the releases would be a single file by now. But unfortunately they are stuck in the past. They won’t stop releasing on 2 CDs until DVDs are discontinued. Then when HD DVD or Blu-ray is the the only format movies are being released on then and only then will they release on a DVD5 or DVD9.

  25. x
    November 7th, 2007 | 17:22

why bother with all theses codec packs when all you need is xvid and ac3filter for 5.1 sound. xvid is capable of playing back divx also…

  26. Jasper
    November 7th, 2007 | 17:24

I agree with Crow. Nowadays are dvd’s as cheap as cd’s. Most of the times the quality of a dvdr is a lot better quality than the scene rips to one or two cd’s. I think the should change the rules.

  32. Rohit
    November 7th, 2007 | 17:46

@Crow & Mr. Know It All
We all can enjoy FASTER releases without a noticeable difference in video or sound quality. When we get a way to make our connections say 4-7 times faster and hard drives 4-7 times larger then the scene will happily releases bigger files or file and maybe even the DVD’s themselves.

  33. George Bush (not the GB ;))
    November 7th, 2007 | 17:49

It wasn’t about the movie size…it was about splitting the 1,4G into 2×700mb

@ everyone - Thanks, I know about how to join them up etc and if this was a few years ago then it would make total sense, regarding expense, but not these days.

We’re obviously forever grateful for all the hard work that goes into knicking the stuff, encoding it and throwing it up onto the web for us to steal. I don’t think anyone will dispute that… well except the MPA chaps etc - but still, it’s near 2008 now.

@Krooner - Really? I’ve never heard of that before but I’ve played files over 1 gig with a pioneer dv600 which it upscaled as well via HDMI.

I agree with all of u. The Scene has been gr8. Getting us movies, free and in awesome quality. However putting in a suggestion to maybe revise the rules is in no way disrespectin the scene. revising 700mb to 4.36/3 can help us get better bitrates (slight as they maybe) and also save on the 300 mb we lose in every DVD. 700mb*6 is always short of the full DVD capacity.
and Die hard 4.0 is Kickass :)

When your using Nero Vision [if you do] all you have to do is add BOTH the files. They burn onto the same disk and it plays just fine. There will be a little skip [almost unnoticeable] when it gets to the middle but that’s nothing. You don’t have to join them or anything crazy, too much work. When your dealing with two files though sometimes you have to change the video options to make it all fit but it can all be taken care of with Nero Vision.

    @12
You need a modded Xbox. Info on how do that is most easily found on http://www.xbox-scene.com .

If you need XBMC and info about that check out it’s manual:
    http://xboxmediacenter.com/wiki/index.php?title=Xbox_Media_Center_Online_Manual

and you can download it from here:
    http://t3ch.yi.se/

Anyway, if you do that you get what pretty much is the best media player out there. The only limitation is that you can’t play HD video (because the Xbox is a little too old for that). It does upscale everything else to 720p though with ease and looks great.

    November 7th, 2007 | 19:28

From what I’m hearing around the scene the next set of rules will probably use the 4.5 GB format instead of the current 700 MB format for xvid releases.

And the files are split because at the source these are downloaded from FTPs. It is a hell of a lot easier to download a folder, use the SFV file to check all the rars, and then download one piece again if it is corrupt rather than downloading an entire 1.4 GB movie again.

  48. Skeev
    November 7th, 2007 | 20:23

I reckon complaining about films being split into 2 files is just silly.

Do you seriously want to have to download over 4gig of files in a vob format with menus etc all laid out for you?

If you want to ruin the perfically good .avi file into a dvd after downloading thats up to you.

If you want to burn both files onto a dvd as .avi thats an option.

Its not about being cheap and using obsolete cd burning its about givin us FREE files thats easy to use at a good size for download and quality.
Four films fit onto one dvd as .avi.

If anything its not about moving forward and suppling the scene with dvd files its about everyone else getting with the possiblites of .avi files as they stand and leaving dvd behind…I have and its great.

If you dont like burning off dvd or cd or making vcds dont..thats up to you.

Get a div x player or better yet a hard drive media player..and save all that wasted time sorting out menus and converting and burning to play on a your old dvd player.

Please leave the 2 file system as it is..its fine and thanks for making every single film that way at that quality.

I like to idea of an uncut Die Hard so this is a go..ta v muchly

K lite is not necessariy. As the other guy said, all you need is an Xvid codec and an AC3 codec. Or use VLC media player and you dont need any codecs.

  51. gossipninja
    November 7th, 2007 | 20:34

@ #49 (aox), I dont think anyone has a problem with files being rared to make fixing a small bit. The problem is the decoded files should be 1.4 gig or more. I think scene rules should dictate ac3 audio (if avail) and possibly bonus scenes/extras, in regards to retail rips.
I would ultimatly like to see a .xvid file format, similar to .divx, that includes menus, extra audio tracks, and bonus features like bloopers or alt endings. I do not think .divx does ac3, so if that could be added it would rock. Im sure it could even be made piece meal, so if all you want is main movie, that is all you grab, yet if you want other stuff, you get “supplement packs” so you would have main movie, audio extra, video extra, subs. and then use some simple app to jam those together as one .xvid file.

yes finally people are getting sick of the whole spilt to 2 700 meg files… i understand that 2-3 years ago most people didnt have dvd burners but now?? … they should just leave it as a 1 . whatever file and those who still use cds can split it while those of us in the 21st centry have the single file everyone wins…

  66. Rom
    November 8th, 2007 | 03:29

I think the CD format is still a good way to standardize file sizes. It allows easy identification of a particular show length (whether its 1cd/2cd/3cd/etc).

OK so if you want a single 1.4gb file…then what about 3cd or 4cd lengthy shows? You’d want 2.1gb..or 2.8gb single file rips.
The 700mb CD format allows you to easily fit exactly 6cds into 1 single-layer dvdr.

Complain how you want regarding the ancient use of cd file sizes but it is all about standardization.
Which is why even tvshows follow this format.
    (4x 175mb = 1CD, 3x 233mb = 1CD, 2x 350mb = 1CD)
