10gigs is about 2.5 dvds, not 10

Stop complaining about CPU’s not being able to play HiDef smoothly. I running a laptop core2duo chip (ie less powerful than desktop chips, and CPU usage playing 720p videos is probably around 10-20% (depending on the movie, encoding, CPU speed etc). I would expect 1080p rips not to take more than 50% on any modern CPU. If VLC reports that you are dropping frames, you need to increase file buffering from 300ms to 3000ms or so, then you will get perfect playback.

Im not convinced video cards really make much difference either (at least not with VLC).

There is no “Rule of thumb” about screen sizes and what resolution is best. Any screen that is “Full HD” 1920×1080 (or more) will benefit from 1080p, anything of lower resolution 720p video is probably best (esp considering bandwidth savings).

My “old” Athlon 64 x2 plays back 1080p with 50%+ cpu to spare (depending on the scene).

Craptel cpus must be real sucky to not be able to smoothly play
these low-bitrate HD movies (yeah 8mbps is low considering that HD movies are 30-50mbps on the discs themselves).

yea i have a Core2Due 2.66Ghz running at 3.4Ghz running hd movies to my 73inch 1080p dlp with no problem as well….but when a hd movie is 1080p 10gigs or more thats when it does not stream as smooth as it should i also have a 8600gts video card running with everything go figure.

something is really messed up with your pc then. My old HTPC was a P4 2.8 with an 8600gt (dvi to hdmi) and it could run HD movies all day with no problem at all.
