Life on Mars US S01E01 HDTV XViD-DOT

Heres the first episode to an interesting looking series (I always love time travel kinda shows, Quantum Leap/Sliders FTW!!!! :) :):) ). This series is a US remake of a british show that ended about a year ago.

Out here in the fields
Partners on and off the job, NYPD detectives Sam Tyler and Maya Daniels are close to catching murderer Colin Raimes. After Raimes is released on a flimsy alibi, Daniels decides to track him down without her partner and then goes missing. As Sam desperately searches for her, he is struck by a car and mysteriously wakes up 25 years earlier – in 1973.

Just from reading the premise, I can tell that this won’t last long. The BBC show only had 16 episodes.

Yeah, and The Office had what? 12 plus a special? The American version is in its fifth season and has had a number of episodes match the best episodes of that show, and has really taken on a life of its own after starting off very much a copycat of the original. Life on Mars could be the same way. This reshot pilot was way better than the earlier pilot, mostly because it followed much more closely to the British version (we now have our own Ray and Chris, and Annie is much more like the British version. Sam also saw flashes of a woman in red, missing in the earlier pilot) and because it has a better cast. Chances are that the show will start off pretty much like the British version, but hopefully will branch out on its own.

Seen the pre, seen this one. Stick to the original.

Another show raped by US networks. What else can you expect?

This looks way better than the first attempy at a pilot for the show with Colm Meany.

Its goona be different cos of al the American styles and methods that suit the ear – so as it will be a proper remake – even if its a copy – and could run longer like the Office – cos lets face it – the uk version was over way to quick and the stories could have been better.

Pull the sticks out and give it a go…Harvey Keitel or Phil Glenister – thats good company.

Are the americans so fu ck ing full of them selfes they cant show a brittish tv show? Do they really think mobs with pitchfork and torches will form just because its not american jobs that made the entertainment they’re watching, give me a fu cki ng break.

Philip Glenister as Gene Hunt is impossible to replace. This show will tank, thx bye.

UK v.: WAY BETTER (John Simm is a better Sam Tyler and day)

ps: why they even bother to trash the original US pilot was beyond me, b/c they both looked like crap.

this show is much better than the UK one, its like a made for tv movie vs a real movie, the acting is incomparably light years better and the writing is also a big step up, no longer corny, and this time it actually looks like the past(looks like they spent money on production). the comments from you poms show your bitter inferiority complexes- why cant they watch our shows bawww bawwww bawwww – no Im not American.

    Also Gold CoastFTW:

Only just read your comments, I’m a ‘pom’ (that term is only used in AZ really) and I was not having a go at the Yanks but riddle me this Batman:

Why does a sucessful show in the UK ‘HAVE’ to be turned into a US version? Was the original UK version not good enough for the Yanks? Do they think “Well yeah that was good, but we can make it better”.

To me the whole idea of turning a UK show into an American spin off (which is all it is when broken down) is a bit pretentious, you don’t have UK versions of Heroes or Dexter, so why do the Yanks feel that can make an improve on something that has already been done.

It’s a mentality thing which I can’t be bothered to go into.

Okay i saw it. If you didnt saw the UK version, i can assure you that one is so much better you cant even compare it. I have to say though, the new york in the 70’s was nicely done. But the office US looked bad at first too, but now it is actually a decent show.

Although both shows will never reach the level of the british ones.

Why do Americans feel the need to “Americanise” everything.

Don’t get me wrong most of my viewing is from the good old US of A. When they make an original series they are world leaders.

Why can’t they just enjoy the UK version for what is. I’ve never understood a country with such a parochial outlook.

They remade the Italian job and where was it set in… Los Angeles ?????

You guys do realize that Britain takes ideas from American shows, and so does every other modernized country, right? It works both ways, people.

Exchanging ideas is good and should be encouraged but come on I wouldn’t mind if British programs weren’t in “English”!

This has been happening for decades
Steptoe & son –> sanford and son
Friends —> coupling —-> coupling US.

I haven’t watched this pilot but I wondered if american police in the 70’s even had a sweeny style of policing, I thought their methods were more like starsky & hutch which you could argue britain copied with the professionals.

Assuming they only make 16 episodes, does that mean they will next try to americanise the inferior (but still good) Ashes to ashes?

  33. The Voice
    October 10th, 2008 | 18:38

    @ 33

Or did Starsky & Hutch copy the Sweeny, as the Sweeny was earlier.

“Assuming they only make 16 episodes, does that mean they will next try to americanise the inferior (but still good) Ashes to ashes?”

    Probably ;-)

“why do they have to copy british shows ?”

    the answer is simple.

MONEY ! If the the brits can make a statsh of cash, so can we.

    Makes sense.

Harvey Keitel as the Gene Genie thats simply ridiculous!!!!
Philip Glenister IS the Gene Genie and no actor can replace that.

And why even bother to make an US version if the original already was brilliant?
    It leaves me baffled.

Hey this is’nt too shaby actaly.
UK guy here, liked Ashes to Ashes over Life on Mars but liked both and when I saw this I groubd thinking how horrible the remake whould be but downloading it it’s quite good.
If you’ve never seen Life on Mars and live/grew up in the US in the 70’s I’d recomend watching this version first.
All the main chars are there and the plot line is there just with a US twist so much so you could almost think of it as another cop sendt back in time the same way alex was in Ashes to Ashes.
Anyway at least give it a look

  38. Biffa
    October 11th, 2008 | 02:42

Harvey Keitel is far too old to play Detective Chief Inspector Gene Hunt and the main actor who plays Sam Tyler is not a patch on John Simm.
but I would say it’s the US show is alright, It’s just a pity it hadn’t be made in the US by a company with more balls like HBO.

We don’t have a bunch of staff writers here in the UK ,All our drama shows are written to come to a natural end from the start and are the better off for it.

ive seen both us pilots, and ive gotta say, i liked the preair pilot, the prototype muc better than the final version. since i dont know the uk version of the series i cant comment on that aspect, but all in all a decent show, but i would have gone with the original pilot. the same goes for true blood by the way.
