Led Zeppelin – Mothership (2007)

If you haven’t at least heard of Led Zeppelin you must have been living under a rock your entire life :P , therefore I doubt they need much of an introduction. This is a compilation that hit the shelves about a week ago, but hey, I’ll post it for those who missed it, also I really think everyone should give them a try at least once in their lives ;)

Edit: Forgot to mention that the surviving Led Zeppelin members are reuniting for a show at the Ahmet Ertegün tribute show in London on December 10th !! Wish I could be there :(

Led Zeppelin were an English rock band that formed in September 1968. With their heavy, guitar-driven sound, Led Zeppelin are regarded as one of the first heavy metal bands. Over 25 years after disbanding following John Bonham’s death in 1980, Led Zeppelin continue to be held in high regard for their artistic achievements, commercial success, and broad influence. The band have sold more than 300 million albums worldwide, including 109.5 million sales in the United States, and they are the only band to have had all their albums reach the U.S. Billboard Top 10. Led Zeppelin are ranked No. 1 on VH1’s 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock.

Led Zeppelin

Mothership was released on November 12, 2007 in the United Kingdom, and November 13, 2007 in the United States. It was released on the same day that Led Zeppelin’s entire catalog became available in digital stores, including the iTunes Store. The album debuted at #4 in the UK Albums Chart with 58,000 units sold. The songs included were chosen by surviving members Robert Plant, Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones, representing all eight of the band’s studio albums.

Sorry. Led Zep (in my opinion) are overrated. Jimmy Page may be able to pen a good riff, but he can’t play it. Robert Plant sounds like a castrated druid on a weird LSD trip, and all the songs go on for 3 minutes longer than they were supposed to. They only did 3 or 4 decent songs, and Stairway was not one of them!

But what REALLY bugs me is that it’s yet another ‘Best of’ compilation, exactly the same as the last ‘Best of’ compilation, but with all the songs in a different order. Same as the latest Eric Clapton offering. A bunch of faded rock veterans and their agents, record company etc., cashing in on their glory days.

Rehash of an old album or not, if it helps introduce one person to the greatness of led zeppelin then i ts worth it. Managed to get tickets for their gig in a couple of weeks and it’s gonna be amazing!

  29. Trell

SANS – I listen to anything. I’ve been playing guitar for 20 years, been listening to music for about 35 years, and enjoy anything from AC/DC to ZZ Top. I have my personal favourites from the 70’s – Allman Bros, Lynrd Skynrd, Focus, Jeff Beck, Matavishnu Orchestra etc., but just found Led Zep to be fairly average.

I just never got the whole ‘Put them on a pedestal’ thing. Same with Hendrix or Clapton. I didn’t say they were crap, just overrated. If that makes me lame, so be it. At least I don’t call other people lame because they chose to express an opinion that was different to my own, mate.

@32 Unsure: The group is called “404″. The file name with group name is lower down on the page.

@33 No1: Thats actually a really good idea. Lossless audio is becoming pretty popular…

Still easily the greatest rock band that ever stepped on a stage, Zep’s music was so well crafted that it still puts to shame 99.9% of contemporary rock. It was music that was built to last. It has.

  38. z
    November 22nd, 2007 | 09:39

So just another “best of” set to coincide with the tribute gig, I’ll pass since I have their whole discography already, woo!
(although if that guy form The Cure’s comments are to be believed, they might be doing a full tour with more gigs)

  39. Zep
    November 22nd, 2007 | 10:35

I will of course listen to this entire album maybe 100 times in the next few weeks!!

I also applied for a ticket and wasn’t one of the lucky ones (you have to ask yourself how lucky it is that all the ebay touts seemed to get them?!) My only solice to this is the fact that even seeing them live now – you’re still not seeing Led Zeppelin live really as the band did stop when John Bonham died.. that is the point that the passion and the unified groove died also.. I’m sure Jason Bonham is a brilliant drummer but not a patch on his old man.

Also anyone see that bootleg vid filmed at one of the Jimmy Page & Black Crowes gig? (http://www.torrentman.com/tor.php?id=375221)

It’s a brilliant set throughout but Page doens’t half hit some wangers and lose the rhythm a few times..

So the time to see Zep live would have been in the 60’s or 70’s… but it kind of ends there.. Robert Plant looks a bit scary now – and he was at the height of Zep’s sucess, sex personified. (Squeeze my lemon!)

    Ah well..

    November 22nd, 2007 | 14:55

trell….if you’re a musician then you’re comments are illogical….i’d like to see you write a more diverse catalogue…and then play it. Nothing touches zep for diversity in style or in particular live improv (NO two nights the same…ever)….full stop. Name one band that compares, and you will be doing well. If you think jimmy cant play….have you watched him live?? Start with TSRTS and then try Zep-DVD recent release before moving on to better bootlegs….watch dazed on TSRTS….then try it for yourself….dont even get me started on JB and the rest…

If not your thing…fair enough….but it’s just silly to say they are overated as musicians….because they are some of the best of all time.

Mind you, you said the same about clapton and hendrix….so its a childish conversation.

    @40

Nothing illogical. It’s a personal opinion. I find them over-rated. That’s all. I didn’t say I hated them. Like I said, it’s a bit like Hendrix. He was good at what he did, but people put him on a pedestal cos it was ‘hip’ to do so. Same with Cobain, Morrison, Marley and Elvis. – You don’t see constant re-releases of someone like Danny Gatton, even though no-one can touch him for diversity, virtuosity, improv etc. – Also, Stairway to Heaven is one of those songs that is so overplayed, it is painful to listen to it. Same as Bohemian Rhapsody. Great song…epic, even, but subject to overkill.

Now my ambivalence towards Zep is a personal opinion. I have nothing against their music per se., but what I do think is a load of rubbish is the fact that this is yet another samey compilation album, pretty much to tie in with their one night only gig/xmas sales. – Led Zep were great in the 70’s, but decided to fleece a mawkish fanbase by re-releasing the same old tunes over and over again.

If you love Led Zep…and I mean truly love them, then you will have the originals. Don’t just jump on a ‘Oh, everyone else thinks they’re cool, so I’ll force myself into them’ bandwagon. It’s OK to like the music you like, but it’s never cool to slag other people off cos they don’t like what you like. That is something I learnt very quickly as a musician. ;-)

Mind you, I don’t blame the band. At least Jimmy Page was inspirational to many, and that’s always good, and John Bonham was a superb drummer. I mean, what he does on Immigrant Song was way before its time.

I just wish whoever holds all the copyrights to Led Zep’s material would burn in hell, so that we can be spared re-releases of re-releases.

If you aren’t a fan, don’t grab it. If you are a fan, you will hear a big difference in these remasters. I’ve done an ABX test with my different releases from over the years and this one is far out in front.

However… why release a greatest hits and not all the discs remastered? Yes. Marketing.

Funny to see comments about Zeppelin being overrated or not being any good. So you don’t like it, whoop-dee freakin’ doo. It’s Zeppelin!

Why are so many people hating on this? As a modern-day yoof this album has completely changed my life… it’s basically turned on a whole new geneation (who weren’t around for the original albums and will probably never see Led Zep live) to listen to a fantastic classic rock band. What’s so wrong with that?
