Lauryn Hill – Ms Hill (2008)

An American rapper Lauren Hill returns with a new unofficial album called simply Ms. Hill. This legendary singer and a long time member of The Fugees greatly mixes the RnB and Hip Hop tunes together in a great compilation of 25 songs.

Lauryn hill is an accomplished rapper, singer, record producer and film actress. Ms. Hill initially established her reputation as force to be reckoned with on the fugees’ albums ‘blunted on reality’ and ‘the score’. She launched her solo career with ‘the miseducation of lauryn hill’, bringing the then emerging neo-soul genre to a wider commercial platform. She has won countless awards worldwide and is finally back with a collection of new unreleased gems, remixes and classics ! Features guests d’angelo, rah digga & john forte.

nothing on this album is new. its a compilation “best of”, and a complete milking of her name. sad.

I saw her live last year. She’s gotten horribly worse, as if she had some kind of substance abuse problem a la Amy Winehouse. She’s a shadow of her former self.

Why is this and “unofficial” album? Did Lauryn not condone it’s release? Very little online about it cept a short note on wikipedia…

“Hill has supposedly completed work on her second studio album. However, online-chat claimed that Columbia, her record label, is refusing to release it. A petition is currently being circulated online by fans (at iPetitions.com), hoping to persuade Columbia to release the album, which Columbia deems not as “marketable” and fears would not be the same as the commercially successful “The Miseducation”. On August 13, 2006, the Los Angeles Times reported that Hill has been leasing space in a 1920s Los Angeles warehouse that has been turned into live-work lofts.[16] It has also been reported Hill has a home in a hotel suite in Florida along with a studio. Hill recently came out of seclusion to record a verse for a song called “Music” on Joss Stone’s third album Introducing Joss Stone.[17] Joss was so insistent in her desire to work with Hill that she called Hill’s mother every day until she could get Hill to work with her. Stone states about Hill: “And Lauryn, I’ve wanted to work with her since the first time I heard her voice. It’s a dream come true for me — a goal I can mark off my list. I love her so much, and she’s just so talented. She’s just a poet.” According To HMV, Virgin and Play.com Lauryn has a new album coming out on the 28th of January Called “Ms. Hill”.”

BOOTLEG … this should be nuked!

25 tracks on an album? if only the record labels would be so generous. This relase sounds bad – totally rubbish. It’s not even listed on Amazon.

Just grab her official albums and the fugees albums off TPB and mininova – your speakers will thank you for it.

    #14, 26 & 28:
You’re perpetuating a myth (about Hill being anti-white) that Lauryn tried to dispel 12 years ago! If you want to hear the lady herself addressing the old, old rumours, listen to this 1996 Howard Stern radio interview:
    ‘Nuff said?

  27. Jon
    January 19th, 2008 | 17:39

“What I did say was that I love my people, black people, and I will continue to make music for them.”

Okay, so she doesn’t hate white people but she obviously doesn’t make her music for white people. So, not only will I never waste money on a single album from her but I won’t waste any of my free bandwidth by downloading her crap either.

  28. hardison
    January 19th, 2008 | 17:53

She was talking about not compromising her music for “crossover” pop success. In case you’re still not feeling her, here’s a video from an MTV show where she tried, yet again, to let the world know there’s no hate in her heart:

  29. hardison
    January 19th, 2008 | 18:06

30: Another point: I listen to a lot of world music in various languages made by people who obviously aren’t making their music with U.S. record buyers in mind. Does that mean I should feel so offended by their reluctance to sing in my native tongue that I should miss out on the unique music they create?

  30. tiger1218
    January 19th, 2008 | 18:12

    @ 14,26,28, and 30
her comments were also made as a retaliatory remark to the then extremely popular tommy hillfiger say that he didnt want black people wearing his clothes.

  31. BOb
    January 19th, 2008 | 19:12

everything were rumours….hilfiger was on opra and he categorically denied it.
So there’s no retaliatory remark from nowhere…stop making stories out of nothing.

    January 19th, 2008 | 21:34

At #29 Im not trying too piss off any one. I was just stating that in my opinion that I believe she is racist. I have seen not only interviews but other qoutes that make me believe this.

  37. I hate ignorance
    January 19th, 2008 | 21:44

Why bother trying to defend her? The people claiming she’s a racist probably don’t like her because she’s black. See the irony? Neither Tommy Hilfiger nor Lauryn Hill ever made the racist remarks spread through rumors. Similarly, neither Rod Stewart nor Elton John ever had their stomach pumped for semen. Wake up and use your brain…and remember to FILTER. Just because you hear it doesn’t make it true. Lauryn Hill has more in common with Nelson Mandela than Michael Richards.

  38. Timski
    January 19th, 2008 | 21:46

this album should have been called “DIE WHITEY DIE !!!”

Why can’t people just give opinions on the quality of music instead of bringing race into the factor. I don’t like Lauren Hill’s music, nothing to do with race I just find rnb a really boring genre, hiphop on the other hand I don’t mind.

i guess no one on here believes in second chances! It’s clear to see that she is different now that she has a new relationship with God! When she became pregnant she realized that she needed a change, so she stopped running from God, and like Jonah, he heard her prayers and gave her a second chance! We should leave her past comments out of this and just talk about the new music! I love her music, but it looks like this “new” cd is just a mix of her old stuff! darn! i can’t wait to hear something new!

  43. Exavier
    January 21st, 2008 | 19:23

Hill’s comments about her music been aimed at black people are quite probably true, read some of her interviews and draw your own conclusions, people. The fact that she recanted (or tried to) was after realizing that white people are the ones spending money on her music plus label executives giving her a bollocking.

The fact that she black does not excuse her racism. Yes, black people can be racist too, you’d think they know better but anyway.

Her comments aside, she does have an amazing voice but all of her songs have been done to death and she needs new material ASAP.

oh and to learn to exercise some restrain before speaking too! The post is of course totally unofficial.

The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill is undoubtable one of the most influential, greatest records of all time. Her debut as a solo artist was amazing. I guess there are some pros and cons to her falling out of the industry. She is not following the status quo and is deciding to live life true to her own spirit, but at the same time we lost some of that independant creativeness when she decided to go into hiding and stop voicing herself through her music. It sucks.

  45. brownie
    January 26th, 2008 | 11:49

I do like Lauryn as an artist but I don’t want to have new albums with the same old stuff again and again. Did she lose her creativity?

I watched Lauryn Hill live in Istanbul last year, it was a huge disappointment:(… I was lucky that I had been able to see Tori Amos before in the same festival.
Lauryn Hill’s voice is gone baby gone!!! She was making such noises like a seal on stage. Those beautiful songs in Miseducation was brutally killed one by one right infront of our eyes. The worst concert of my life and I really couldnt believe it was her under that heavy make up and in high collar mafia dress. Lauryn cant return anymore and noone’s waiting indeed.

  50. what is a racist
    August 18th, 2008 | 12:29

I cannot stand when people throw around the word racist. Who and what is a racist. A racist is someone who is part of a group of like featured individuals who cling to a culturally defined belief, that they are not only superior to other individuals who have different physical aesthetic qualities and characteristics, but also perpetuate and engage in the cultural, economic and social annihilation of another group of people. A racist person is not simply someone who prejudges another race based on stereotypes. A racist person has philosophies that have been indoctrinated into their psyche due to systemic myths and lies that have been deemed truthful for a significant period of time.
