Launching RLSLOG forum: first details

There have always been a few seemingly unstoppable issues here at rlslog. One is spammers. Nobody likes to skip through 10 meters worth of comments to find that one link they’re looking for. The other problem we’ve had is people who can’t behave like mature and polite individuals. I have to admit I’ve lost it from time to time due to the mere frustration of having to deal with some of these people, and for that I apologize to the rest of you.

So far there have been a few general ideas as to what we could implement to solve this problem:

  • Require registrations to comment
  • Include division and multiplication in the spam protection
  • Banning all IP’s that spam and write off-topic/racist/obscenities etc.
  • Create a RLSLOG forum

The first solution has come up several times but never really stuck. If we were to require registrations from everyone to comment we would surely loose comments from many of you who don’t spam, and provide useful information and opinions. Many people just pop in every once in a while and write a line or two and wouldn’t bother registering, therefore this is not ideal.

The second solution wouldn’t really work long term (people would just buy calculators). The third idea has been implemented to various degrees. We have banned some of the major swear words and warned readers that certain things will lead to a permanent ban. Its not hard to get around the swear word ban first of all. Second of all, manually banning IP’s is not something we really have time for, and even if we did, people would still just use some workaround.

The last solution is to create a forum. When I suggested this the other day to Lee, we discussed it for a while and agreed that the following would be ideal: A rlslog forum which is independent from the rlslog site and leaving the current comment system intact. This way, a rlslog community can be built and more serious visitors can enjoy a spamless community. Martin agreed when I proposed we try this out. There’s nothing we can lose – if the whole forum project doesn’t succeed, we can close it at any time.

Martin: There are few technical details I would like to point out before launching this thing. I would be happy to have the forum on a separate domain and server, which would ensure it’s online when our site goes unexpectedly down and vice versa. This will give us another level of flexibility and method of communication with our readers. I was also thinking that we have 200 thousand readers every day, and there must be someone with a webhosting account or company. So, we would like to kindly ask you, if there’s someone who would be able to provide a hosting for this forum, to contact me at my mai.

We prefer offshore location (US laws suck) and that’s basically all. Just a classic hosting with PHP and MySQL able to run Invision Power Board will do the trick, the bandwith or free space will be on a standard level. There won’t be anything illegal at the forum either, just a filesharing talk, so you don’t have to worry about legal issues. As I said, if there’s someone with Reseller account or a stable, working hosting firm willing to provide the space for us, we would be happy to hear from you as soon as possible. Thanks.

Edit: we got enough offers already, thanks everyone who emailed us.

A forum would be nice. A secure forum would be better. Just guarantee whomever you accept hosting from are who the say they are.

the way it is right now is fine for me,it’s fast, you make your comments and that’s it,simple, the morons that make stupid, racist or abusive comments should be banned forever.

whoever said the spam protection is for bots is on drugs… any old noob could write a script to read the Sum of ‘9 + 10′ text & calculate… unless they made it a picture… much harder to read a picture. Seems to be there solely to slow down human spammers.

I thnk comments section should integrated with forum, so registration on forum required to post comments. if someone is too lazy to register then thier comment is prolly not worth it.

    this is SWEET!!!
id be heaps happy to be able to research releases through a RlsLog forum
your point about spam is proved beyond all question of a doubt by “spammer” (by the way spammer….your a f@#king IDIOT!plain and simple) and it will be awesome to be able to avoid scrolling through such crap in a forum environment

    oh and an idea…..
maybe it would be wise to limit the size of posts made in this coments section
i figure if there is a release that is too big to post rapidshare links here for instance it would be an encouragement to post it in the forums rather than having to make 5 posts in here …..the poster could simply post a link to the rapidshare through a forum link

    easy

    Peace

@110 (stop crying little girls) : So your a trannie?

    any-who; first time, long time…..

personally I love how this blog is set up. sometime alittle slow, but hey, you/they have a life too and it’s understandable.

ultimately my question is: what can you implement in a forum (to stop the idiots) that you can’t here?

If -admin/mod/head in charge- can read my email addy, use it. I am very active in SMF; Simple Machines Forum, and the mods can’t be beat.

Open Source, however I toss in 5-10 bucks a month for beer since that is all I can afford. Have a running board now.

Lemme know, I’d love to help.

I like men, and also cross-dressing. I’m in love with ReeGed, i like it how this badass-metalhead (mp3s are not for tr00 metalheads) rocks out with his c0(k out. I love to hang out with my wang out.

Oh what a lovely sight this place is – all men liking are welcome here, that’s why i come here

I know we get annoying rapidshare spammers which personally I hate and shouldn’t be able to post links. They should be the ones to suffer. Personally i think RLSLOG would be cutting their own throats and the community feel will be lost because everyone will be too scared to warn the next person. Just another forum where you have to log in and remember yet another password to add with the other 30 will ruin what is a great site. Plus banning people 1st time off is going a bit too far as some people here have supported this site for years and even increased it’s popularity through word of mouth. How evil the world would be if people were sacked for a first mistake. What about say a 2 week ban which would be increased if the behaviour continues. Just a suggestion.

While it would be nice to have a forum that’s policed for the things that are posted on this site, you’re going to need 3 times the people to police it with a grand poobah to over see it all to make it work. This site seems to have enough trouble just posting something with little spelling and grammatical errors, policing the sure to be doomed forums would be a major undertaking.

    March 8th, 2008 | 09:16

    Nice :D

Im all for registration to comment, no moderators having to manage a forum and its the simplest idea.
Forums can be hacked, spammed aswell and i dont think their mutch better then current comments, if anything it just adds more to do..
Register to comment will be better because lazy spammers/offenders wont bother yet the site stays the same without the need to click around.
Having a registration that takes awhile and cant be automated ofcourse only increase the pleasure spammers have to endure to keep spamming after bans ;)

    @#53– “Dear Martin and Staff,

Please be sure to reserve a section of the new board where people can fight as much as they want without being moderated. The only way you can make a scene board fun is if you also allow people to have full scale board wars as well so they can air out their aggressions and provide epic lulz for all to see.

    Sincerely,
    A Rlslog Reader.”

An excellent idea! May I also suggest a Mr. X subforum to complement that section? :P

the real reason why registering would not be an option:

every time someone comments here or clicks to read the comments you get an advert, means making money for the site. if there was registration you wouldnt have 70% of the comments.. i.e. advert income.

i know i wouldnt register and not even bother clicking the comments. why read them if i cant respond?

I’d register, You have to use IPB, it is so simplier and nice to the eye,

The IRC channel is enough. Why add a forum to the mix. Just start distracting people from what this is all about. Plus, I couldn’t stand all those Viagra ads, and when they’re desperate to advertise, the buggers can add, divide, subtract, multiply… Even do algebra :O

  35. wickido
    March 8th, 2008 | 11:15

    lol, 141 comments by now.
Its a pity it has to come this far. Spamming people, big-o-lists-of-comments, I can see it isn’t working for you guys. But, I only come here to check out the latest releases which may have managed to pass by me somehow and perhaps to leave a small unforced uncalled for comment. ;)

I think a forum will be fun for the diehards, but overall I think there is allready the Newtorrents.info forum which would be similar and do not think of it as the most valuable asset to rlslog.net. Perhaps it would be nice though, for all the people with their RS/Flyup/Yastorage/etc… links, so the comments here stay kinda clean and organized.

Neways, you have all been doing a great job maitaining the site, but problem solving can’t be done by creating a seperate forum, it just won’t get rid of fipo’s and spammers. Therefor I can’t see much changing, other than there would be a forum which would lead to maybe some more off-topic matter to talk about. Besides, who says spammers aren’t to be shown up at forums? You’ll need a whole new crew for the forum alone. So, we’ll just wait and see. Gd luck! :D

Is this possible for you guys?:
Each news article posted here, will automatically get a thread in that forum. F.ex this ‘Launching RLSLOG forum: first details’ would get a automatically created thread called the same.

Also, let the forum be really secured. And the comments that are posted here, goes automatically in the forum as well. Then, you can have another sub forum that can be used for us members mentioning releases you might have overseen or something. That would make the original thread and comment field a lot more easy-to-follow.
