Kingston success with ultrafast RAM: 2.1 GHz

Kinston Technology, a leading supplier of memory modules, demonstrated on Thursday its ability to overclock its HyperX DDR3 memory modules to unprecedented clock-speed with the help of a mainboard running Nvidia Corp.’s next-generation core-logic that supports DDR3 memory. The memory module maker overclocked its HyperX PC3-16000 (KHX16000D2K2/2G) memory modules from their default clock-speed of 2.0GHz to 2.13GHz using a mainboard powered by yet unannounced Nvidia nForce 790i core-logic for Intel Corp.’s processors. At press time it was unclear which latency and voltage settings were set. Back last year A-Data and Walton Chaintech introduced their 2GHz Vitesta DDR3-2000X and Apogee GT Blazer DDR3 2000 memory kits that could operate at 2.0GHz with 2.10V or 2.15V voltage setting.

The ultra high-speed memory modules utilize 6-layer print-circuit boards, which are often used to manufacture rather expensive graphics cards and mainboards, which automatically makes such memory devices pretty expensive. In mid-February this year Corsair Memory also joined the 2GHz club with its new Dominator-series memory modules. Back last year very few platforms could actually handle 2.0GHz memory speed and hardly all end-users who acquired such memory modules could actually make them work at their frequency. However, as Intel X48 and Nvidia nForce 790i SLI chipsets are approaching the market, it is expected that considerably more enthusiast-class platforms will be able to boast with 2.0GHz memory clock-speed. Currently unannounced Kingston HyperX PC3-16000 (KHX16000D2K2/2G) memory modules will be available in Q1 2008.

  12. TitosSlave
    March 2nd, 2008 | 17:31

What are the latencies on these sticks? I read the timings on most DDR3 RAM is super high so it kind of evens out the high frequency. I still don’t see the point in paying such a premium for DDR3 RAM though. My 680i board had trouble with my 1066mhz sticks so I down clocked them back to 800mhz but tightened the timings to 3-4-3-9 and actually got better benchies. Then again I should’ve never went with an Nvidia board but choices are limited when you need SLI. If it wasnt for that I would’ve loved to grab a P35 or an X38. The memory controller on the 680i stinks.

  21. TitoSlave
    March 2nd, 2008 | 19:48

@15 It’s obsolete in terms of not being the best anymore. DDR3 will begin to become mainstream, Nvidias 9800 will be out soon but the G92 cards are already available at cheap prices, the newer 45nm chips are out now breaking 3Ghz stock and able to hit 4Ghz+ easily. The new motherboards being able to push much higher FSB, more x16 lanes, and a host of other benefits. And the biggest factor being how quickly prices decline solely because better parts are released shortly after yesterdays best.

Theres not much out there I can’t run on my current setup but Crysis could sure run faster on the newer machines. Even on my rig it’s tough getting smooth 30+FPS on a 1920×1200 single monitor with AA and AF enabled. I can encode/convert video quicker, unpack files quicker, turn on all the bells and whistles on the latest games at high resolutions etc. with a newer setup as well. Its not what I can run, it’s how quickly I run it.

“What is top of the line now if that is so obsolete?”

4GB of the sexy RAM posted in this article
    Auzentech Prelude

Thats not even including any server type GPU’s or processors, just mainstream consumer parts. Of course I could build an $800 budget machine and still do most things I can on my current rig, only slower. If your not interested in building your own rig, keeping everything updated, and overclocking the Hell out of everything theres nothing wrong with that. Thats what Dell is for! :)

    @18 Stewie
Your system is probably seeing it as 500 mhz due to power saving. Right click on your desktop and go to properties. Click on power saving and change the scheme to “always on”. Then apply those settings and right-click on my computer to check your CPU speed. It should have jumped up to full speed. Once you are in the “always on” mode, you can still change the time settings to turn your monitor off, or go into standby, etc without losing the speed. The key thing is to be on power saving mode. I’ve had this problem with AMD CPU’s before and that has always fixed it. Let us know how it goes!

Geez, why are those ppl so buzzed about DDR3 RAM, cpu instruction cache with jump predictions and data cache with read predictions are working so well now, DDR3 speedup is barely seen on real life benchmarks and not so impressing in synthetic ones. The real deal is cpu ang gpu with it’s memory, there should be DDR3 not sticked in your MB.

    March 2nd, 2008 | 22:32

I have the newest version bios available. it is most likely the mobo as it used to read it fine, but now it doesnt. I tried to manually change it but its pretty much like overlocking, the system becomes unstable and the cpu gets freakin hot :(

Seems like someone thinks that the world have infinite supply of electric power?
No it does not have that!
Unless that chip uses less power it will consume more power.

Using 1000 Watts PSU are gonna soon make someone biuld more of the dangerous Atomic power plants.

    Anyone heard of power saving?
one 9 watt power save light bulb have the same effect as one on 40 watt.
Guess what, a 1000 watt PSU (some people have that) could power 111 power saving light bulbs.
wich have the same effect as 111, 40 watt light bulbs.
Now you know your 1000 Watt Psu uses as much electricity as a power saving nightbourhood.

    LOL:)

kingstone forever man iv been using it like forever, best ram for the cash i think, but this is stupid buying the latest doesn’t give us so much power as u think, my Pc far from perfect but i can play all the games in decent Fps (60-100)
i dont need the 200+ Fps its just for show off nothing more, but guess pll want to sow off and waste money.

Q:why is the Pc industry like this?
A:CUZ MORONS LIKE TerMin4T0R, Kamo & Co. BUY IT as soon as it gets out

if they don’t buy things worth a fortune for 5-10% more power (show off)the industry wouldn’t be like this, company’s would make products that would stay in the market longer (not like now, u buy the newest thing and next morning guess what? new sH*it came out and teh thing u bought for 500$ is now 250$)
So f all show off’s u messed up the f industry thx a lot morons (guess money cant buy brains)

@33 It’s not like those 1000Watt power supplies are running at that amount constantly, if ever. Most people that put 1KW PSU’s arent even using half of that. And the world does have an infinite supply of electric. Ever see a windmill? Or go rub your feet on the carpet and make your own electric current. In any case, not to worry. Theres only so much wattage a wall socket can supply(around 1400 watts I believe) so the never ending race to get more wattage will soon end. Its mainly marketing hype to have the most powerful PSU. Most newer components actually require less energy than their older counterparts. But I hear ya on the whole save the whales, save the snails, save a tree bit.

@34 The industry in general puts out different levels of product in all price ranges. It’s not like consumers don’t have a choice. If you can’t afford the GTX they also offer the cheaper GT. Can’t swing for the fancy new 3Ghz xtreme quad core? No problem, they offer a downclocked quad with a locked multiplier for half the price.

It just sounds like your mad at people who like to have the best in their rig. Don’t worry-we’re not hurting you in any way and the industry will continue to invent new groundbreaking products as well as middle of the road products for people such as yourself that don’t need to “show off”.

And just to show you how completely stupid your entire rant is, check out what $8500 got you years ago when PC’s were no where near as popular and there were hardly any “showoffs”. Basic economics, supply and demand. Learn it with your big brain.

I love a majorly OC’d top of the line system as much as the next guy, but I think uber fast PC’s may actually hinder proper game development. I played HL2 on an 800mhz rig and I bloody loved it. I have since seen many games that look much, much worse and yet will not run unless its 3ghz/dual core. Making good games that scale properly is an art, and having uber fast and extremely expensive pc’s transfers the cost of good development from the game developers to the cost of your pc.

    —————-
I already did. A QUAD CPU motherboard with each of the cpu’s 4GHz. Kingston 16GB Fully Buffered ECC DDR2-667 xw4300 ram memory (just one of these sticks smokes a hole in this memory stick, and they come in 4GB sticks) I have 2 cards that allow me to add up to 240 hard drives in a Raid 3 formation with each being able to be 1 terrabyte in size, though I only have 6 terrabytes filled. My pipe is 18mbps down with 12mbps up and costs me $80. a month for the connection. Have an HD compliant 21dpi Optiquest monitor that gives me the same picture as an LCD. With four X20 dvd writer/re-writers and an X-Fi Sound blaster audio card.

Now dont you feel pretty stupid for starting this whizzing contest of who has the best system TerMin4T0R? And I would bet that there are members here that have systems that would make even mine look slow. So go back and play with your jack in the box and when you get a real system, then you can start bragging.

I want to see some benchmarks comparing low latency DDR2 800Mhz (4-4-4-12) Vs this new high latency DDR3-2000Mhz (9-10-9-27). Somehow I don’t think it’s worth the trouble or cost of adaptation. DDR2 took a long time to be uniformly adopted and I see DDR3 taking even longer. It’s cool though none the less.
