ReeGed’s J-Rock

Its Sunday/Monday on planet Earth, which means not a lot is happening in the scene. I’ll take this chance to post something which has been in the works for a while now (It’s been planned ever since the first Drum & Bass Delirium), but the right moment hasn’t arrived until now.

Do you miss the 80’s? Personally the 80’s were my favourite decade. Back then, people used to make mixtapes for eachother containing their favourite tracks. They were basically like personal Best of tapes. Well, I’m bringing the 80’s to the 21st century by releasing my first world wide mixtape.

I’ll be making new posts every once in a while, each with a different genre. This is meant to introduce people to new genres and in the same time diversify the kind of music posted on rlslog. In these posts I’ll try to include scene releases as much as possible, however often the music I will be sharing hasn’t been released in the scene, or is VERY hard to get a hold of.

This first post will be about J-Rock. J-Rock is a very diverse genre, since it basically just means Japanese Rock (some of the tracks are more POP oriented). You probably won’t like EVERY single track in this release, since they are all very different, but hopefully you will appreciate some of it. Japan is musically a very isolated country considering the amount of great music being created there, which is one of the reasons I’m making J-Rock my first genre.

You can download the Mixtape from RapidShare, MegaUpload, Upladed.to and Flydrive. You can also download the full album pack. These are the albums on which the tracks in the mixtape reside. About 2 days ago I started looking for scene releases of these albums on a couple of topsites, private trackers and some forums. Unfortunately I only found one, which is the Moi Dix Mois release. Quite a few of these albums HAVE been released in the scene, but are unknown and therefore not traded a lot. This is why most of them can’t be found even on the most extensive sites.

The Mixtape starts off with one of Japans biggest superstars: Gackt. Gackt shot to fame as the vocalist of Malice Mizer (founded by Mana, who later founded Moi Dix Mois [Track 10]). It then continues with some very melodic tunes from Sambomaster and Kra. MCM and Dir En Grey are two bands that have received a fair bit of recognition outside of Japan (MCM were featured on the Tony Hawk 3 OST). The mixtape continues with two VERY poppy tracks from LM.C, An Cafe and Plus-Tech Squeeze Box but then takes a more melancholic note with BUCK-TICK and Moi Dix Mois. The penultimate track by recently reunited legends X Japan is something every metalhead should listen to at least once [solo is god]. The mixtape ends with an acoustic track off Miyavi’s first solo album.

I recommend you download the mixtape first and if you like it, download the full album torrent pack. Enjoy.

Surprised we have not had any whiners screaming “its not scene!” or “hot new info about scene releases?, this is not new or scene!”.

Strange how people nearly sh4t their pants over the P2P rls of Gnarls Barkley - Odd Couple (yes it has dodgy id3 tags) but this seems fine?

i hand-drew the character in pencil. I used illustrator cs3 to convert the pencil drawing into a slick vector drawing with the live trace tool. then more illustrator to make certain shapes. finally, i bring it together in photoshop for assemblage and final coloring.

If you enjoy these bands, there are ton of other bands in the j-rock genre, some that sound like these folks, some that don’t. Here are a few suggestions!

I’m going to name the more known ones first:
    L’Arc en Ciel
    Asian Kung-Fu Generation
    UverWorld
    Janne Da Arc
Abingdon Boys School (the second band of T.M.Revolution)
    Beat Crusaders
    Orange Range
    Anna Tsuchiya
    The Pillows

    Here are some lesser/indie/underground bands:
    Yura Yura Teikoku
    Go!Go!7188
    Monkey Majik
    The Babys (hard to find)

  30. juicebox
    May 19th, 2008 | 03:34

Asian Kung Fu Generation is also a good j-rock band (IMO)

  31. hank hill
    May 19th, 2008 | 03:36

definitely his later work, after splitting off from the roc-pile.

    Who’s the microphone assassin?

first and foremost… ReeGed, YOU ROCK DUDE!! thankyou thankyou thankyou thankyou! i love J-rock :P *rocks out to Oh My Juliet*

and to add to that list of “other bands to check out” that DC61385 had going up there, MAXIMUM the Hormone is cool (more metal, but still awesome)

  37. Toast
    May 19th, 2008 | 04:23

I’m surprised no one has mentioned Shinkou Shuukyou Gakudan NoGod. NoGod is got to be my fav. J-Rock band. Who wouldn’t love a band that had a drummer with horns!

  38. May 19th, 2008 | 04:31

    @36, Tibiazak:

Dude, Maximum The Hormone is probably my absolute favourite J-Rock band. I completely forgot to include a track of theirs this time. They will definitely be in the next J-Rock collection though (will be a while though since i’ll be going through a bunch of other genres first)

  39. Joe
    May 19th, 2008 | 05:19

Leaning towards the ‘visual-ke’, no? (i.e. in Japan, Hair Metal never died.)

Post #29 is more indicative of what’s happening now. Asian Kung Fu Generation does indeed rule.

These acts are recent-ish & like ‘em:

    Supercar
    Brahman
    Go!Go!7188

    I’ve seen torrents floating around.

No love for High and Mighty Color?
Guess they ain’t considered heavy enough or something :(

And Damn #29 said enough for you to add for next time.

    Thanx ReeGed,
Some albums I didnt have there :D

I love your diversity of music :D

ReeGed: I definitely got love for High and Mighty Color, and there are a lot of tracks on this mix that are a lot LESS heavy, i just didn’t want to make a mix that was too big. Might be included in the future though =)

ReeGed: Yep, they’re back. They released a new single at the end of 2007 and played 3 concerts if I remember correct at the Tokyo Dome only a 3 weeks ago or so. They’re playing a gig in Paris in July! I might be going.

I definitely would like to see some High and Mighty Color, Asian Kung Fu Generation, Yui and HIDE - might be all quite ‘known’ and popular, but hey, they make great music :p

Great initiative by the way! Really like this a lot!

This is an awesome release ReeGeed, Thanks!

Personally i don’t listen to j-rock, but i did listen to the mixtape. Some of it is really good.

The only reason i feel a bit reluct about j-rock, is mainly because of that i feel like i’m becomming the weeabo sterotype lol.

    Anyways, nice release.

I don’t really like j-rock, usually sounds very cheesy to me - but if your wanting to try some japanese music here’s cornelius’s latest e.p. (you’d be better getting the albums Fantasma or Point first though ;)

Hey thanks for this! Being new to the j-rock scene, I have no clue about this particular genre so it helps when people make compilations such as this. This is not to say I haven’t been a fan of Japanese rock, there are ‘The Black Mages’ among others I listen too. Check them out (especially if you like final fantasy!) 3 albums:
