Popular BBC comedy series set in the fictional south coast seaside town of Walmington-On-Sea during World War 2. Alternating moments of gentle character comedy with broad slapstick, it recounts the misadventures of the local voluntary defence force (or ‘Home Guard’) consisting of men too old or ‘unfit’ for military service. They are led by the pompous Mainwaring, manager of the local bank, and consist of the suave, mild-mannered Sergeant Wilson , Lance-Corporal Jones, the town’s butcher and an old soldier prone to hysteria, cockney spiv Walker, dour Scots undertaker Frazer, gentle, elderly and incontinent Godfrey and dim-witted mummy’s boy, Pike, whose mother is ‘friendly’ with Wilson. They are based in the Church hall where there is much friction between Mainwaring, the effeminate Vicar, his creeping Verger and ARP Warden Hodges (the grocer) who calls Mainwaring ‘Napoleon’ and strongly dislikes him. The 80 episodes (the last 68 made in colour) have been frequently repeated, many are available on video and there was a 1971 Cinema version. A British institution, familiar to most people throughout the country.

Dad’s Army is a classic in the true sense of the word. It produced some of the finest comedy moments on tv ever, and as for “Wot the hell is this ?! Dads army, never heard of it just more british rubbish.”, well you should really try watching a few episodes. This craps all over ANY American stuff. The live stage version that toured a few weeks back was superb as well. The sentiments behind the programme are perfect, echoing the struggle of Britain in the early part of the war, (that’s the 39-45 war, not the 41-45 war), and the last ever episode pays tribute to the real Dad’s Army, the Home Guard.
So, three things…don’t slag off something you know nothing about, leave the comedy to the people that know about it, and finally, it’s a shame you are called Frank, as one of the leading characters is named the same..

Just because you never heard of it doesn’t make it rubbish. It’s actually a classic. Personally I’m a Brit living in the states and love British and American comedy. But there’s a lot of crap comedies in the States too. Check on the show and see some of it before you make comments like that. If you don’t like a show you’ve actually seen fine, but the general comments about something you know nothing about and have never seen don’t exactly show you as the sharpest of people here.
I’m 26 and I used to watch this show and it’s really good. They used to play it on Belgian tv but not anymore
