John Carmack unveils details about new DOOM

The next entry in the Doom series will suck up “three times the horsepower” of id Software’s other upcoming titles, it said Thursday. Id’s technology whiz John Carmack and Todd Hollenshead announced the new title in the seminal first-person shooter series at the company’s QuakeCon event Thursday. Carmack was comparing the new Doom to id’s other upcoming title Rage.

Both will be built using the company’s ‘Tech 5′ engine, but “the next Doom game will look like it’s built on another engine” because it’s so powerful, said Carmack. To keep up with the processor demands, Doom will run at a frame rate of 30 frames per second, compared to Rage’s 60. Doom will be a multi-platform release, although Carmack said that “the PC version will support significant visual improvements over 360 or PS3 versions.” More details available at Quake Con Keynote at 1up.

Stick to making engines iD. You can’t make games at all so don’t even bother.

He is sounding just like a PR guy from Crytek already talking sh!t abt FPS & all. Eventually it will come out to force gamers to buy Intel’s Larrabee GPU that will be released almost at the same time IMO. :(

Yeah, if you spend about £2000 on a new computer, or buy a new £500 graphics card.

    500 $ for a video card
    300 $ for a new motherboard ( with ddr3 ram )
    400 $ for 4 gb ddr3 ram
400 $ for quad intel cpu
    550 $for a new screen …bigger…and true high definition
    …mmmmmmmmm… vacations vs super pc
i thing im going to pass…
i prefer to spend 500$ for a 10 days trip in Spain and another 500$ for 7days Greek island and 1000 $ for a trip in Brazil and still have money..

16 johnix: You wouldn’t need 300 $ motherboard, no need for DDR3, it’s only slightly faster than DDR2 and costs alot more, ~100-150$ motherboard would be okay and DDR2 is cheap, no need for 500$ GFX-card unless you want to run it all maxed. No need for that expensive quad core..

  19. Newt182
    August 4th, 2008 | 14:20

why does everyone over exaggerate the prices of buying a top PC gaming machine.

DDR3.. not needed. DDR2 at 1066Mhz is cheap enough now.
Two OC 8800GT’s will easily max out this game and many more to come, until the next consoles are released.
If you don’t already have a C2D then you need to be throwing that crappy PC away now anyway. A quad core will not be needed for this game although it might help add a few more frames.

If you spend your money wisely, then you can get a gaming PC thats future proof until the next consoles for a relatively cheap price.

oh yeah, I’m looking forward to this game ;)

  20. Damaster-
    August 4th, 2008 | 14:22

Newt182: Yeah, but I would take two 4850s, because they are faster than 8800GT =)

If you cannot show respect for Carmack then please take all your FPS an just burn them, because the id staff that made all those great head-shots over the years possible…
    …where…,…rreeeeeeeaaaaill-fuuuoccckehd-uppp-on drugs.

Yes since Quake 3 Arena id has been more about the tech then the creativity, but just look at whats coming:

    -Rage (Mad Max anyone?)

-New Doom (not labeled #4, possibly a new/revised story)

-FREE Online Browser Quake (too many possibilities)

-New Wolfenstein (could go either way, lets hope for WW2 Nazi steampunk action)

this is a version of quake for office plankton
a quake game in your web browser

doom3 was utterly disappointing, covering game engine mega requirements by black screen, using cheap horror techniques etc. so yeh, it was kind of disaster

if rage will be continuing this kind of direction, definitely not gonna buy a game, neither upgrade pc to play that sh1t.

Ummm… how in the hell does he expect to get three times the horsepower out of the PS3 but especially the aging hardware of the XBox360? It’s not the CPU’s of these consoles that are weak, but the graphics throughput and more importantly the low memory bandwidth. The PS3’s memory bandwidth is a lowly 22.4 GB/s. That’s equivalent to an Nvidia 8600GT which is hardly capable of rendering today’s high tech games. The high end PC graphics cards today have memory throughput as high as 150 GB/s. They will really have to cut out a lot of what makes these games great.

Regardless if you like his games, his tech and ideas are riddled throughout all games.

I’m not a big fan of any of the games id has produced since quake, but I am a fan of a TON of games that has used his engines.

The fact that he is still inventing graphics techniques should be great news to any gamer on any platform.

  29. henderson
    August 4th, 2008 | 15:40

I think we all respect how Carmack and co. pioneered FPS technology in the early years, but I’m not gonna get excited about them taking a load of coin from hardware companies for hyping up some new ‘technology’ or ‘techniques’ - the big hitters and cutting-edge designers of games these days are not interested in what Carmack has to bring to the table

If you know how to code, his opinion is relevant. Don’t be sore that you think his talk is hype.

I hope they focus on making some original gameplay mechanics rather than making Crysis style graphics and ridiculous system requirements. I have a bad feeling this might be just like Crysis in that it will run really poorly on most PCs when it comes out, because it sounds like the guy is already bragging about the graphics. I am sick of having to constantly buy a new PC to keep up with system requirements. It seems like gameplay is becoming an afterthought and developers are putting too much emphasis on having the best graphics. The FPS genre needs more originality, not higher system requirements!

    Here we go again.

    Developer A - The Idiot’s Approach:
Let’s make a game that requires so much computational power to run, you’d need to put another mortgage on your home just to purchase a computer powerful enough.

    Developer B - The Smart Guy’s Approach:
Let’s make a game that runs on as many machines as possible (requirements-wise) but let’s be really inventive with the storyline and make it really addictive.

Example of Developer A: iD software

Example of Developer B: Valve software

Obviously there’s a reason why Valve’s Half-Life remained top of the charts for so long compared to most of iD’s recent creations. Eye candy != Good game.

    August 4th, 2008 | 19:33

I hear that there will be ’shock pads’ coming along with the game. You place these dime sized pads on various parts of the body (as illustrated in the instruction manual) and connected via USB to your computer. When ever you get hit or mauled by a ‘zombie’ character, you will be ’shocked’ at the spot your were affected by. Until you find ‘health,’ the area(s) will continue to throb. Also, there’s this pr0n video game called ‘Ultimato Gangu Bangu’ where the object of the game is to pleasure and withstand a growing amounts of ‘participants’ without blowing your load. Equip’t with a USB Pocket Pu$$y…well you get the idea.

Yikes. Tossing off on a video game is the wave of the future!

    @ 39 McBain

John Romero and John Carmack are different people. Also game engines by id usually scale very well with older/current tech.

  43. 6400+7900GT
    August 4th, 2008 | 20:27

Id do make good engines, and they do indeed scale well. I could play Doom 3 on medium/high quality graphics on my then 2 year old Geforce 4 Ti4200 and P4 2 ghz,and the game still looked very good.

There is of course far too much emphasis on graphics over gameplay in most cases nowadays. Even when a game has good gameplay and great presentation like COD 4, it still at 5 hrs tops, seems far too short.

You don’t need a top of the line system to make the game run and look better than it ever will on a console

Anyone speaking about 2000 dollar PCs and how they’d prefer to spend the money on [insert inane bragging object or activity here] is a complete moron trying to feel good about spending their money on the children’s plug n play system with inferior everything because they can’t handle anything more complex. Or more probably, their mommy won’t buy them more than a single console so they badmouth everything else
