Japanese Blu-Ray porn supported by Sony
Shortly after Blu-ray’s launch last year the word got around pretty quickly that Sony was blocking the adult entertainment industry’s access to distributing pornography on Blu-ray. According to his experience on the frontlines, the real problem was getting the Blu-ray discs pressed in quantity, as all the major replication facilities were contractually obligated to not touch any adult material. Smaller facilities reportedly feared retribution from Sony. As such, adult entertainment in the States has seriously favored HD-DVD, leading to many analogies to the VHS / Betamax format war in which porn played a major role. Times seem to be changing however, at least in Japan. According to several producers at the recent Adult Treasure Expo 2007 in Chiba, Japan, Sony has begun offering extensive technical support to the domestic adult entertainment industry.
Various restrictions exist on how discs can be replicated in Japan as well as the US, but a workaround has been engineered in which Taiwanese replicators have been granted licenses and equipment from Sony to press adult Blu-ray releases and send them back to Japan. Mass production is slated to begin in August. It wouldn’t be surprising to see a similar solution engineered for America, and there are, in fact, already a few Blu-ray releases available here. Now the only hurdle left for Hentai fans looking for some tentacle action in 1080p is finding a reliable exporter in Japan. Stuffing your luggage full of the stuff on your next vacation won’t work, as the Japanese like to keep their homegrown porn all to themselves, and they’ll confiscate anything they find when you try to leave the country. Damn, who would think this Blu-Ray / HDDVD battle may be decided by porn!

Is this irony? Seing that the VHS vs. Betamax was decided by the porn industry I would think so?
The world really is a despicable place when something like this influences the direction our technology, and by extension our society, takes.
HD-DVD should ban it from their formats as well as BlueRay. That would certainly take the powerbase away from pornographers.
I’m not against pornography between consenting adults, but I’m against it having an undue influence over our long term direction.

Hahahahaha, ofcourse Sony is being rediculous. What kind of stupid strategy is it to let your competitor have a monopoly on the real-porn production medium (hentai is drawn anyway). How do they really think this will work out? All porn on HD-DVD and all other stuff on Blu-Ray.. Do they really think this is gonna happen. It’s gonna be so much cheaper if everything gets one medium. Otherwise it’s gonna be like “i want a HD-DVD player please” “Oh, you filthy man”. I think Sony hopes this will actually happen, and nobody buys HD-DVD anymore because of shame… NEWSFLASH -> Porn has become more mainstream and one of the biggest film-industries of the world… Get real.

Remember how the internet became this ‘big’? Right, T&A and everything that goes between or into them. Sex sells, alway has and always will. Sony can play the moral white knight, but in the end they are just about the money and will allow porn on Blue Ray.

Of course it was going to be decided by porn. Anyone who knows anything about format wars would know that. Adult entertainment is mainstream now and yes, of course, we want to see hot young teens getting banged in 1080p. So what if porn is the deciding factor? It’s not about which is the better format, there is little difference between the two in reality. I would back whichever format gets the porn content out first.

HD-DVDs can be cheaply produced from every DVD factory already, with a few modifications… none of this licencing/DRM allseeing godlike $ONY bulls**t.

Well we all know now that Toshiba punked out and let Sony win – without even trying an anti-trust suit against the RIAA / MPAA /SBA of which all of the studios and Sony are a part of. And now Sony is using it’s position to try and tell people what they can or cannot do on Blu-Ray. All they should be doing is making and selling it none of their business what people do once they purchase a product!
