posterWith 2 & 1/2 weeks until Bond number 22 hits the big screens (only in UK, France and Sweden mind you), MGM has delighted fans of this, arguably the best, special agent movie series by producing Blu-ray versions of some of the classic Bond adventures. SEPTiC didn’t hesitate and what better way to start than the very first movie of the franchise? This has been remastered in HD, but it’s still the best way to see Ursula come out of the sea in THAT scene…

Review
Released in 1962, this first James Bond movie remains one of the best, and serves as an entertaining reminder that the Bond series began (in keeping with Ian Fleming’s novels) with a surprising lack of gadgetry and big-budget fireworks. Sean Connery was just 32 years old when he won the role of Agent 007. In his first adventure James Bond is called to Jamaica where a colleague and secretary have been mysteriously killed. With an American CIA agent (Jack Lord, pre-Hawaii Five-O), they discover that the nefarious Dr. No (Joseph Wiseman) is scheming to blackmail the U.S. government with a device capable of deflecting and destroying U.S. rockets launched from Cape Canaveral. Of course, Bond takes time off from his exploits to enjoy the company of a few gorgeous women, including the bikini-clad Ursula Andress. She gloriously kicks off the long-standing tradition of Bond women who know how to please their favorite secret agent. A sexist anachronism? Maybe, but this is Bond at his purest, kicking off a series of movies that shows no sign of slowing down.

    I did not see any difference from the 007 blu-rays to regular dvd’s. I think this is just an excuse to release and make more money. Then they will bring out special editions, then collectors edition, then anniversary edition…oh, and we cannot forget the box set edition.

    Hmmm. 1280 x 768… that works out to an AR of 1.66. Yet IMDb states 1.37 AR for Dr. No.
    Well, I don’t trust SEPTiC on their AR’s–they always screw up on 2.35 AR movies by undersizing 544 to 528–so I wouldn’t be surprised if they frakked up again. Well, benefit of the doubt for the moment.

    This should be nuked. 1280 x 768…come on if it’s an older film with an odd AR then reduce the width when enocding, NOT the height…720p is standard…Nice SEPTiC real nice…

    They are giving you more picture, so what are you complaining about?

    Also, 720 pixels of width is NOT a MUST for a release, a lot depends on the source AR, which it does in this case.

    I would just like to say thanks to whoever uploaded this classic Bond film. Ursula Andress in any resolution fine but in HD – Hubba-Hubba. So my next comment has to be, who can up a copy of Goldfinger and my all time favourite Bond girl – Jane Seymour in Live and Let Die??

    @22 I am complaining because my films are all viewed on a 720p native Front Projector so the resolution is 1280 x 720: pixel for pixel, resulting in a stunning picture. For me to view this, the image needs to be scaled and when it is then quality is reduced. Not a complaint if i were viewing a 52″ but my screen is 120″ and that’s why i am picky about quality.

    Besides, if you look at any of the other older black and white releases from the other groups internal or external they always crop the width and maintain the 720p pixel height.

    Also 720p is an industry standard, albeit an older one. As is it is too small for 1080p screens but to big for 720p screens.

    @27 uhhh yea it’s not like warner bros or w/e take the dvd and they’re like hey, lets just copy it and put it on blu-ray! they use actual film, and hollywood has been FILMING at resolutions that can easily be HD for YEARS.

    We haven’t seen the quality that film can produce. Blu-ray is only a fraction of full resolution film quality. To get true film quality onto a DVD format, we would need at least 200GB of space.

    I have to agree, we’ve got a long to go before we see every bit of info on our home systems that’s contained in a 35mm frame of film.

    I also laugh at the kids who think anything that’s made before 1980 must have a poor image quality. Can’t wait to see those old 70mm prints go to HD. Bluray won’t even come close to seeing those images in all it’s glory.

    It’s been a long time since I’ve been this excited about watching movies at home. Right now is a pretty cool time for movie lover’s like us.

    You are absolutely right. AR is not right. Basically I have to zoom in with my sony bravia lcd to crop black side borders. Hangover release is the one that works.TESTED IT.
