ISS BlackICE PC Protection v3.6 cqn Incl Keymaker-CORE

This will probably be my only post for today due to other commitments, so I thought I would make it a useful one. BlackICE is known world-wide to be a leader in PC and Server protection. Here is their latest PC release, being version 3.6. Personally, I haven’t bothered to install this one, with so many options available, I am happy with my current setup. But this may float your boat, so enjoy :)!

BlackICE teams a personal firewall with an advanced intrusion detection system to constantly watch your Internet connection for suspicious behavior. BlackICE responds immediately by alerting you to trouble and instantly blocking the threat.

BlackICE PC Protection now features Application Protection, an exciting new feature designed to shield your PCs, laptops and workstations from hijack by an attacker, and protects you from Trojan horse applications, worms and other destructive threats.

Program Features:

  • Professional-strength protection from hackers for your home PC.
  • An advanced Intrusion Detection System (IDS) Plus a Firewall!
  • Easy installation and “out-of-the-box” protection means you’re instantly protected.

Maybe I’m stupid but how do you install this?

    August 23rd, 2007 | 15:23

Not stupid either….I can’t figure out the install. It almost looks like the two files need to be joined but the resulting file is not an exe…? Tried to make it an exe and still nothing. Can anyone give a clue here?

hmm after unpacking the setup files have the extension .001 and .002 not quite sure what to do with these? changeing them to exe’s didnt help and the nfo doesnt explain

    August 23rd, 2007 | 15:35

ok, so first unpack the main zip file ,,,then unzip the other 2 zip files that appear, then use winrar to unpack the BIPCPSetup.001 and .002 files and then you should have the setup.exe file , not sure why my winrar didnt take charge of the 001 file itself but still …

You click in the right mouse button in any comperssed file (zip or rar files)and then click in “extract here”. If it desnt work select all the zip or rar files, click right mouse button and “extract here”. It must work

Well.. I don’t know if the author of this article knows what he’s talking about, but he seems to think that blackice is, well, no good..
    http://www.matousec.com/projects/windows-personal-firewall-analysis/BlackICE-PC-Protection-3.6.cpj/
and that isnt the only review i have read that seems very negative about this product..

Does everybody here recommend blackice or what? I need a firewall, and preferably something lightweight that doesnt hog resources.

I thought BlackICE used to be considered a really good firewall once upon a time. Recently, I’ve heard nothing but bad things.

I like Outpost Firewall, but it still hasn’t made friends with Kaspersky AV on my computer. Can anybody recomend an AV that works *well* with Outpost or is Outpost just being a dick?

Or just use KIS 7.0. I had no problems for months.

About 4 years ago I used black ice and it thrashed my computer. I was unhappy with it and tried to do an uninstall. yeah not good. I had to format my machine, as there was no way to get windows to boot including normal, safe, and last know good config. I got all my data off with a knoppix disc, but it was still annoying.
While it may be a good program now, I am never going back to it, and I have a dedicated linux firewall box so I don’t need a software firewall.

Didn’t they just go out of business recently (the story was on slashdot recently I think)?

IBM bought out ISS a little while ago and they just recently announced that BlackIce has reached the end of the product life. ISS will stop selling BlackIce after September this year and all support will stop one year after that.

BlackIce was good but the later versions kept getting more and more bloated, taking up more resources than what it was supposed to protect.

umm, isn’t this version an old one? Version 3.6 has been out for quite a while??

Although this is a good firewall for a corporate server, if you’re a regular home user then there is no point because it just goes to in depth in what to allow internet/network access.
Otherwise, you can use what i use which is Sygate Personal Firewall Pro, which is a good firewall, for a home PC. (Maybe not for beginners though.)

    My 2 cents.

I’m using BitDefender Pro, which doesn’t eat too much resources and is very easy to use, too easy- which can be kinda annoying if you like to have a fully configurable *fire wall* with log viewing, packet analysis, etc ;)
It’s also a good antivirus(imho it’s rather more antivirus than firewall), so only it’s presence you can see by *virus promt* windows and automatic updates in background ;)

OK I have had go and bad results with Blacksceen(Not BSD). Anyway i thought i would give this a try again on a new box so i could stop an app from seeing/talking to the net…well i didn’t get that far. Rebooted 84% of install can ok until after reboot jst steated to reboot. And to uninstall is Fun no uninstall options in Add/Remove no msi uninstaller Go into PROg FILES\IIS and run the bat file then BIremove.exe…The reboot ans hope for the best remove old prg files dir…Be warned…A shame i have heard nothing but praise, i will not be bitten twice.
