iPhone will cost you at least $60 a month

Apple and AT&T have revealed their pricing plans for iPhone service. Plans range from about $60 to $220 per month. Each plan includes unlimited Web access and e-mail, which will allow users to take advantage of the device’s heavily touted Internet capabilities without having to keep tabs on how much data they’re transferring. Text messages, however, are limited unless the user buys a step-up. The packages also include rollover minutes and unlimited mobile-to-mobile calling. However, those who use their mobile phones for extensive text messaging might be unimpressed with the 200 monthly SMS messages that the plans include. Increased message limits are available for more money, the companies noted. There’s also a one-time activation fee of $36, and Apple said signing up can be done easily through iTunes, a free download for both PCs and Apple computers.

iPhone service plans require a new two-year service agreement with AT&T, the companies said. In addition to the least expensive, $59.99-per-month plan, which includes 450 minutes, there is a $79.99 plan that buys 900 minutes, a $99.99 plan with 1,350 minutes, a $119.99 plan with 2,000 minutes, a $169.99 plan with 4,000 minutes and a $219.99 plan with 6,000 minutes. Family packages are also available, ranging in price from $80 for 700 shared minutes to $310 for 6,000 shared minutes. Each additional phone costs $29.99. The most unusual aspect of the service packages is that all iPhone plans include Visual Voicemail, which the companies call an industry first. A feature found in most Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) packages, Visual Voicemail will show iPhone owners a list of their voice mail messages. They’ll be able to choose which to hear without having to first listen to any that came first.

There’s some great betting action on iphone at BetUS.com…

Consumers are reported camping out waiting for an iPhone – 3 to 1
Initial iPhones get recalled – 30 to 1
iPhone sells at least 12 Million units in 2008 – 5 to 6
Apple’s stock jumps at least 10% in value in regards to the price on 6/30/07 – 1 to 2
Consumers pay at least three times the original price ($1500) on ebay – 2 to 1
The screen breaks/cracks like first generation nano – 150 to 1
There are mass reports of the battery life being less than the promised 8 hours – 10 to 1
Someone is trampled while trying to get an iPhone – 20 to 1
    iPhone spontaneously combusts – 150 to 1

How many iPhones will Apple sell in the first month?
    Over 1.2 Million Units – 5 to 6
    Under 1.2 Million Units – 5 to 6

I’d being will to take the “iphone sells on ebay for $1500″ bet. ;)

wow that’s pretty cheap… 1/4 of the price average canadians pay for their wireless service.

  6. June 27th, 2007 | 03:36

@4, you sucked me in to goign to betus.com, there is nothing there to bet on anyof that, i wouldve put a 100 down on getting trampled, and gone to trample someone just to win.

It’s not all that bad…All I’m doing is upgrading my current plan. For between $20-$40. Each of the 3 plans ($20 – $30 – $40) have unlimited web/email data, unlimited visual voice mail and atleast 200 SMS Text Messages. All that for only an extra $20 sounds pretty good to me.

Also….do you seriously have to pay $36 to activate it?…I watched the entire video of them activating there iPhone and there wasnt any payment menus what-so-ever.

I think pricing is going to make the iPhone a huge failure. The phone is at least $500 for the 4GB model, plus $59 first month + $36 activation. So $600 gets you a small capacity iPod and overpriced phone plan along with a cell phone that has unknown calling quality.

  10. June 27th, 2007 | 04:41

    Go fuck yourself.

My vx6700 looks just like an iPhone now… and I just pay $10 for my line of the family plan… much better deal.

And I have my 80 GB iPod for music… I wish they’d work on making a 500 GB iPod instead of overpriced phones.

Sure it’s a shiny phone, but yeah, it’s A PHONE.

it looks like a very closed platform. i generally like apple’s design, but i wouldn’t pay for something so experimental and restrictive. apple’s getting too greedy. the high end nokias (N95) aren’t cheap either, but are far more open to 3rd party apps and networks.
otoh, it will be a triumph for the design economy if apple succeeds with this.

hmm its kinda cheap for unlimited data
i do think however they should have had an option without, since not everyone will be using it for that much data

pretty lenient for my eyes..having to just pay 20$ a month since I already have att…plus im paying 20$ for medianet unlimited with 200 sms right now..so cancelling medianet and switching over would be no money lost cept for activation…

vlc: “wow that’s pretty cheap… 1/4 of the price average canadians pay for their wireless service.

The pricing listed above is for the USA, which means that it will take a bit longer for the phone to reach Canada and will cost more (even though our dollar is catching up to the US dollar).

No way I’m paying that much. If I had money to throw away then I would get it for its sleek look and capabilities, but overall it’s not worth it right now. I don’t even use a phone for other things other than calling someone once in a while.

I love how they say that there’s a one time activation fee of 36$… available from the free download, iTunes.

What good is it that iTunes is “free” when you use it to pay for something. Ohh, thank you great Apple. We don’t have to pay for iTunes so we can give you more money. Is there no end to their generosity?

The cell plan is one thing, the phone itself is the other. And phone is a big (literally) crap – no videocalls, no memory card, no flash for camera (and it’s just 2mpx without autofocus), INTEGRATED battery (LOL, after a year or so, if it’s down – buy new iPhone), and last but not least PRICE! No, thank you. I’m good with my SE K800.

Looks a good deal to me, I pay £30 (~$60) a month and that only includes 250 Mins and 1000 texts with NO incuded web access!! Once again it highlights the fact that I live in “Rip Off Britain”!! :(

    June 27th, 2007 | 17:50

another thing to consider is that the iPone will have a closed platform, ie only the software that apple develops and wants to run on the iPhone will run on it…

where as a similar phone like the Nokia N95 has hundreds of softwares from lots of 3rd party developers, some which utilize the phone in a unique and un-orthodox way pushing the phone’s capibilities and making it do this it wasn’t meant to (eg like that mosquite repellant sound software)…

the iPhone is just too close ended for me…

    @timo:
EDGE sucks ass. It would be great if you could have flat rate WCDMA or HSDPA, tho. Then I would try to use the iPhone as a high-speed PC modem. Probably doable, somehow… We’ll see.
