Internet still not working in Asia after an earthquake

I’m pretty happy living here in the Europe, but the latest news coming from Asia would make me a little upset to say the least. Several ships were on their way Thursday to repair regional telecommunications cables broken by an earthquake off southern Taiwan, but officials warned that it could take several more days before Internet access across much of Asia returned to normal. Fixed-line and mobile international telephone connections were largely back on line, two days after the quake, with a magnitude of 6.7 – property damage was limited, but six of seven undersea cable systems, accounting for 90 percent of telecommunications capacity of the region, broke “one by one” in the quake and its aftershocks.

The cables link countries in North and Southeast Asia to one another and to North America, and the disruption has underscored the vulnerability of the telecommunications infrastructure that the fast-growing region depends on for commercial activity. Most telecommunications companies were able to restore international voice calls Thursday by rerouting traffic to satellites and to cables unaffected by the earthquake.

By the way, these cables are worth billions of dollars and are often longer than 11 000 miles in length, so imagine how difficult it must be to find the damaged area. Could you even imagine living without the internet nowadays?

I think that they should update the infrastructure to prevent such breakdowns. It’s a good opportunity to do so rather than replacing the weak ones.

hi, I am living and working in China and I am happy that I, by now, can reach this site again. It really sucked and right after the earthquake, for about 12 hours the only websites that have been working were all Google services. By now we are almost back to normal, but still some websites in Europe or the USA are slow due to the limited bandwidth still available in and out of large parts of Asia.
    happy new year! :p

Chinks and yellow Asians in general don’t even deserve the Internet, they invented fuck all. It’s easy to copy western technology and use it 10 years after the rest of us.
But whay would you expect from them

In reply to the previous English,
You should watch your messed up mouth! Bet your some punk-ass b!tch who probably got ripped-off by some rogue trader off ebay, hence the sour-grapes. To say that Asians have never invented nothing clearly demonstrates your level of IQ and age. Maybe you should try growning a brain before making pointless unconstructive comments…
    Peace

Almost a month on, and the net is still pretty much toast where I am in northern China.

Just think of all the money that will be lost to those people trying to pirate western movies and .MP3’s… it’s such a shame.
