Internet Explorer market share down to 68%

Web sites saw visitors deserting Microsoft’s Internet Explorer browser in favor of Apple’s Safari, Mozilla’s Firefox and Google’s Chrome in December, according to Web analytics company Net Applications. Internet Explorer was used by 68.15% of Web surfers monitored in December, down from 69.77% in November and 71.27% in October, according to preliminary figures published by Net Applications on its Hitslink Web site Friday. IE’s share has slipped from around 75% since the start of 2008. Safari, Firefox and Chrome all profited from the slide in IE’s popularity. Firefox’s share rose to 21.34%, from 20.78% in November and 19.97% in October, while Safari’s climbed to 7.93%, from 7.13% in November and 6.57% in October.

Google’s Chrome browser topped the 1 percent mark in Net Applications’ survey for the first time, with a share of 1.04%, up from 0.83% in November and 0.74% in October. Opera’s share remained steady at 0.71%. Net Applications warned that decreased workplace use of the Internet in December may have biased its results. “The December holiday season strongly favored residential over business usage. This in turn increases the relative usage share of Mac, Firefox, Safari and other products that have relatively high residential usage,” it said. However, Internet Explorer’s market share actually declined more slowly in December than it had done in November, according to the company’s figures.

Everyone should just stop using that r.tar.ed browser, it would make every web developer's life easier.

Google Chrome isn't much of a browser… It is dedicated, like not lots of menus… but the animations look very very bad…
As for IE… because of free shipment with windows it is used, and not lots of users are familiar with other MUCH better browsers.

Firefox 3 is still the best browser in my opinion. :)

I don't mind Opera not being there. It just good as it is, no need bigger market share. The more popular a browser becomes the more it is vulnerable to attacks, spam and adds. Look at Firefox, it is just getting messier with all the blocked adds. Opera blocks them too, and that without add ons, but there is just so much less adds to begin with and to block.

"The December holiday season strongly favored residential over business usage. This in turn increases the relative usage share of Mac, Firefox, Safari and other products that have relatively high residential usage"

so if someone would make a personal choice (at home) they'd prefer anything but IE ?

firefox is imo the best browser atm and has been for a long time in terms of speed of loading and the addons that are available for it. As for Chrome … i tried it out and it's kinda like a heavier version of Rogue that dosent work in games.

@10. i lol-ed at that comment. it practically states what you said. And honestly speaking if IE wasn't incorporated in the windows platforms for the last decade it wouldn't have had such a large share in the first place. it's like when years ago AOL browser and Search and big usage ratios because every dial-up AOL user had to use the aol desktop tool.

If only they could do something of the memory bloat in Firefox. I'm sorry, but 300-400 MB leaving it open a day is ridiculous. Not that IE is better, IE uses more and you don't even know it since it's tied into Windows Explorer. Google has promise, but it doesn't have the extensive plug-in collection that Firefox has

IE rules forever! why do you want to waste time downloading and installing firefox when ie works so much better and looks prettier and have better graphics out of the box. some people just don't know how to use ie that's why they are having problem. just read the manual or somethin.

from netscape user to IE, happy with IE until the day that firefox borned. It have faster loading time compare to IE which kinda slow n getting crappy. Now google chrome came out from nowhere, yes google chrome seem faster loading time but eventually it lack of something.Nothing can compare to firefox at the moment. :)

IE 70% market share? why? cause it pre-come with window xp/ vista. Some IT savvy ppl dont really care bout it which just continue to use IE.

Yeah.. I am a firefox hound.. I love the thing.. Wasn't there a story on CNN last week about how IE was vulnerable and that people should stop using it..

So now it is known that people should not use it…

My boss has to use it on her computer because the payroll company that we go through, needs IE to be the browser because of some program they use.. Wish they would just switch everything over already.

@18.. Ha! I do the same thing.. Install add a few add on's etc..

if all web developers supported firefox better (if 100% of sites worked great forsure) then I would switch the company i work for over to firefox. since that's not the case yet business users are going to keep using IE.

I think that people see an angel of a browser in FireFox, but is it really that clean? No. As of December 2008, Firefox 3.0 had more security exploits than any other browser. Firefox uses alot more RAM and handles multi-threading is crap compared to IE 7.

Firefox is mostly myths, and the sad reality is that many still believe them, making up some crazy ass story in their head. The only difference is the Addons, something which neither of the other browsers have anything like, however, with more code means more security exploits and instability.

Actually the fact that many people are now using firefox has made me reconsider using it myself. Hackers are now targeting firefox aswell as IE. I got a lot of malware through firefox. In the good old days noone would bother to use a firefox exploit because it would be too much trouble for nothing, with such a small number of people using it.

I'm still using firefox for most of my daily browsing but when I want something more secure I use opera or chrome. That would be my advice to everyone.

Yeah, I don't use IE until I absolutely have to – actually, it doesn't even seem to work on some of my computers. I like using Opera for my daily browsing for it's speed and ease of use, though I switch to Firefox whenever it can't display something correctly or whatnot. I've also started using Chrome somewhat too, and it's not too bad – runs pretty quickly on slower comps at the very least.

Opera is still miles in front IMO. Firefox's continued bloating is just getting rediculous and i now use chrome as my number one back-up for the odd site opera has trouble with.

@27 i hope ur kidding, firefox is open source, opera and ie is not, if you use ie or opera your traffic goes through a kernel controlled by NSA.

For those who said that IE is fine ..try to open 50 tabs in IE & see what will happen to Ur memory usage I have been using Firefox for years now the only problem is it's memory leak but this became much better with FF3 waiting for FF 3.1

donjaun, even if ie8 beta rocks. ie didn't start to 'rock' until other browsers forced them to up their game.that's right seems if it wasn't for the 'others' out there the 'market leader' i.e. still wouldn't give a damn about you/us.

and the last review i read of i.e. it just seemed to be 'borrowing' ideas opera and firefox brought to the table.(without adding much else) maybe that's changed now. but i doubt it's changed by much.

I'm a web developer, IE don't follow the web standards you often needs to do a extra fix for it look the way you want it. I just don't know how that market share is calculated. I don't trust it.

    Go to http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_stats.asp

The only people who use IE: 1 because IE comes with Windows. 2 because people never tried firefox.

IE 6 will be gone maybe when IE 8 comes out.

Because of difference between the power user and the open source fanatic power user, both spreading the word and showing IE is not the only choice, for being first I chose Opera. Why? Opera leads in innovations and does it right way. Opera's developer tools are very slick and standards compliance is unbeatable, real world speed and benchmark speed are top, customizations are more than possible (few exceptions exist such as identyfying or masking as Google Bot) and overall experience – speed of interface, mouse gestures etc, all are in my personal opinion putting Opera on top.

Cons of Opera: not everybody knows about it and even if knows, chooses another IE alternative based on generally speaking biased and uninformed opinion.
