Internet Explorer 8 Beta 2: more security

Microsoft Corp. took the wraps off the latest test version of its Internet Explorer browser on Wednesday, unveiling new privacy and security features as the company battles the upstart Firefox browser. Internet Explorer 8 offers users greater control over whether to save or erase their browsing history, “cookies” and other data. It also includes a browsing tool called an accelerator, which allows users to highlight text on a Web site and then choose from a variety of functions, including different search engines, language translation or map displays.

Microsoft released a version of the new browser for Web developers to test earlier this year. The version released Wednesday is available for all consumers to download. Microsoft commands 73% of the browser market, while Firefox has 19% market share, according to research firm Net Applications. Microsoft’s lead has fallen in recent years. Just four years ago, Microsoft’s market share was more than 91%. In addition to Firefox, Apple Inc. is becoming more of a competitor as strong sales of Macintosh computers have boosted use of its Safari browser, which has about 6% of the market. Use of Firefox shot up in June when a new version was released. More than eight million people downloaded the application in the first 24 hours after it went public.

Opera is still better them all but I like the new IE8 over FireFox. Also, their skin is one fine tuned piece of.. skin.

Opera is great but takes a little to get used to, once you have it probably works superb. Problem is the relatively small group of users and add-ons/plugins (in comparison to Firefox for example). That is the reason I ill stick to Firefox for now, with Adblock Plus, it surely works teh bombs for me. :D And who ever uses Iexlorer anyways?

Unfortunatly for my work I need to make sure sites are compatible with the 3 big browsers (In order: IE, FireFox, Opera), so I’ll have to check out IE8.
Beta one was balls, but beta 2 isn’t on the site yet?

Well as a web designer, it’s always useful to check out new versions of browsers. Although IE has lacked in a lot of things since IE6, Microsoft is determined to keep the majority share of the market. Although I stil prefer FF, it’s good to see MS start competing properly again, as that will mean Mozilla work even harder to keep FF better than IE!

Shakista, that’s pretty much a fake. Although I agree IE renders pages crappy, it’s never rendered summin THAT crappy, and as you can see that’s the MSN.com site or summin Microsoft, ye REALLY think they wouldn’t check if it ran on their own browser?
Also, the pics they’re showing below are made with IE6. SIX. Not eight. Not seven. SIX.

Who cares?IE is IE,no matter how many times MS tries to fix it,it still s*cks. And opera is much better than FF,FF is useless without it’s plugins.

Amazing…these are the same people attacking IE that attacked Netscape when it first came out, yet they cannot or will not seemingly understand that Flock-Firefox-Opera are all based on the mozilla kernal which started with the original Netscape.

    What goes around, comes around.

to each their own, and for anyone who isn’t too “security-savy”, FF is probably the answer for now.
i still prefer IE just for the fact that is handles tables faster, which is important if you go to websites with alot of tables like most text based games like idlepimps, or any of those gang war type games where browser speed matters.

people must believe they are running something exotic and chic using firefox instead of IE and then boasting about, how they feel elite in some way. First off 97 percent of you still use windows and 83 percent of all web users use IE. Those are the facts oh wait its in the article posted above. Thank You

    @24 Zed
I hope everyone will be forced Zed. That’ll finally get rid of all old versions of IE, and will make my job a LOT easier.
Yer not forced to USE it, but at least it’ll irredicate all the old versions of IE, so I don’t have to take into account that some people still use IE6…

@25 - NATOSOFT, that’s a pretty stupid comment, yuo almost had something until you posted your ‘facts’. LOL some people’s children!

“First off 97 percent of you still use windows and 83 percent of all web users use IE. Those are the facts oh wait its in the article posted above. Thank You”

    No they aren’t !

97 and 83? Isn’t it 73% ” Those are the facts oh wait its in the article posted above. Thank You” fkin moron.

The FACTS, as you like to call then are actually BS poll results, a LOOOOONG way from being facts.

Or were you referring to the “FACTS” that you created in your head, once again based on BS statistics.

Apparently IE8 comes with ‘Google Furker’ algorithm, which enables the user to turn off their internet page history - thus screwing Google analytics.

Prepare for the clash of the titans!

I like Internet Explorer. Just wanted to say that so people reading this didn’t think that everyone uses Firefox or Opera or Safari. I use IE because it WORKS. I’ve never had a problem with it. I’ve used the other three for a year and the headaches they gave me drove me up the wall. I think people are just overlooking them so they can say “F U” to Microsoft or something. As if that makes them cool.

Downloaded this yesterday.. not bad for IE. I usually use firefox, but just rolled that back after 301 has terrible character rendering problems. About to go all IE over fox if they can’t get their STUFF straightened out.
