Intel shipped over 1M quad core CPUs

At last year’s Intel Developer Forum, Intel pledged to ship 1 million quad-core processors before AMD ships a single Barcelona processor. Intel reached this milestone today, approximately two months ahead of schedule. Since we started shipping quad core processors last November, we have already sold well over a million parts thanks to our extensive 65nm factory network,” Intel PR Manager Dan Snyder said. “And with 45nm just around the corner, we expect the ramp to continue well.” Intel’s quad-core product lineup currently consists of mid-to-high-end models for desktops, workstations and servers. The company plans to slash prices on Core 2 Quad and Core 2 Extreme processors come July 22, 2007. Price cuts for the workstation and server Intel Xeon processors will come shortly afterwards.

Intel plans to penetrate the enterprise server markets with quad-core Tigerton-based Xeon 7300-sequence processors later this quarter. The upcoming Intel Xeon 7300-sequence processors can scale up to 32 processors and utilizes a new point-to-point bus system that allows each processor to have independent communication with the chipset.
Later in 2008, Intel plans to introduce the new Tukwila quad-core Itanium processors. Tukwila is Intel’s first processor to take advantage of the new common system interface, or CSI. As Intel moves the Xeon product lineup to the CSI bus, the Xeon and Itanium product lineups will begin to share architecture similarities. AMD’s quad-core plans lie solely with its upcoming Barcelona architecture. Barcelona is a native quad-core processor with four cores on the same die. AMD is having troubles scaling Barcelona, with Computex demonstrations at 1.6 GHz and an upcoming launch at 2.0 GHz.

Not really quad core though. Just 2 dual core packaged together. The only real quad core x86 architecture was announced by AMD but it’s been delayed. Maybe even as much as next year.

Hopefully Dell and Alienware will be getting these soon and prices of the 710/720 will drop.

damn the 939 socket ive got dual core cant keep up help lol.Prices will be high for now anyway.

farce, dual dual-core’s not quad cores. Funny how AMD keeps up with this intel monster even though the entire company is worth less than intel spends in research in 1 year. The little guy’s kicking ass for sure.
quad core opterons are out september if i remember what i read on the register earlier today.
intel’s just workin the publicity machine, as this article shows.

Amd’s Barcelona (real quad-core) is shipping in August or September. The comment about it being delayed until next year is not true.

Barcelona introduces a process shrink and a redesign at the same time. Intel is more conservative and releases only one major change at a time. So it’s a big risk. Hopefully it works out.

I admire AMD, Hell I even have about 3 or 4 rigs that are AMD Powered, but Intel has it in the bag atm.

with the Core Duo & Quad Core Extremes the speed is amazing . . . speaking from experience & not a professional edge :P

Can’t will till it’s more affordable

New barcelona, 2.0ghz max, wtf lol. I like intel’s response to that ‘native quad core’ spin by amd = “Who cares”

Anyone here buying up Intel stock? I think it’s on its way to become a monopoly this time. Amd is toast.

YES, now I can finally use all those applications optimized for the Quad Core CPUs! Oh wait, there aren’t any…

AMD toast??? Seems to me this is the first big break Intel has in years. Plus it isn’t ‘real’ new technology, but just two dual cores glued together. AMD is there to stay. Like others pointed out, they are doing everything better then Intell, only their marketing isn’t as good. So ask yourself, is it about marketing, or is it about the best technology in you system?

Why, 4 single core cpu-s put together are a new technology? (if 2*dual isnt’t) :)
AMD’s arhitecture is better, however, with the same price, you can buy an Intel CPU at much higher Mhz.

Intel is better,i never had any problems with intel, not a single processor gave up on me and i fucking overclocked it every time i bought a new one.I used AMD only once and i was disappointed from the performance and reliability (it burned up after two months) for fuck sake AMD make a CPU that doesn’t burn up right after the cooler stops. That shit doesn’t happen to Intel man ;)

I also think AMD is in a bad position. With there new graphic cards turning out as a flop after being delayed several times and there new cpu’s with a max speed of 2GHz (wtf that’s stone-age speeds). They could better come up with something good in the near future.

Haha that load of AMD fanboy’s above is just amazing. :D
I just love to read the comments here on rlslog, they are always so “funny”.

it’s not the ghz anymore… just shows how you are a sucker for intel’s marketing. the only way intel is “on top” is cuz of it’s marketing, uneducated consumers and fanboys. Im waiting for barcelona

Amd doing everything better than Intel?

    2GHz (wtf that’s stone-age speeds) ?

Those two sentences show that this thread has been overtaken by the absolutely clueless.

i think he meant them in jest spoonfed, of course 2ghz isnt from the syone age, rocks are from the stone age.

that wasnt a very biased “article” at all. i wonder how much it cost intel to have it written.

Yes, it isn’t just the Ghz, but
    FSB speeds
    Caches / memory subsystem
what devices are the CPU’s motherboard compatible at which
operation speeds (floating point / integer ) / bit length
    speed
    reliability
    price
    …(much more)
    (some are AMD’s advantages!)

compared to this, I think Intel beats AMD at price/performance

For home use i would advice Intel…

And if someone compares, compare things that are realesed at the same time, not a product that is for sale quite a while, and a product that isn’t available yet…

If there were no AMD fanboys, then we wouldn’t have no choice but an Intel proc with its bloated price. You should be thankful AMD fanboys exist.

Why are you waiting for Barcelona? Do you have servers at home? Phenom will follow (AMD Quad for desktops).

I’m gonna glue two quad cores together and make myself a octacore !!! Oh man, its gonna be awesome :-)

Who cares who is better AMD or Intel, all I care for is bang for buck, if the system fails early you get another usually free chip, a few days without your precious PC (Unless like me you have multiple) and your back and killing bad guys again in the virtual world. So relax and enjoy the benefits of true competition, because if was a monopoly like you know who then you’d be paying much much more! Good luck!
