Intel Core i7: 40% more performance
A new CPU from Intel is big news around the PC enthusiast realm. Intel has introduced its latest Core i7 CPU that promises to deliver vastly superior performance compared to the previous generation of Intel processors. According to Intel, the Core i7 parts deliver 40% more performance in processing intensive applications compared to the previous generation of processors. The CPU features Turbo Boost Technology that accelerates performance to match a computer user’s needs and the workload of the system at the time.
The on-die power control unit uses power gate transistors to automatically adjust the clock speed of one or more of the cores inside the CPU depending on the needs of the system. The technology also allows sleep states that are normally common only on notebook systems. Available processors include the Core i7-965 Extreme Edition runs at 3.20 GHz at $999 and the i7-940 running 2.93 GHz for $562 and the i7-920 at 2.66 GHz for $284.

i’ll take 4 with a side of toast!
bugger,
i just bought a new pc…. :’(
40% in best case scenarios. In other uses it will probably be around 15% better than Core2Duo. Still a noticeable improvement considering the Core i7 prices.

I think it’s overpriced… it’s like in the old Pentium days when a computer would cost you an arm and a leg.
Anyway… the highest Deneb can (or we will have to see if it can) match the i7-920’s performance as suggested by experts.
Considering that any i7 is overkill for most games out there and the i7 platform is very expensive at the moment if anyone would consider building a new rig should wait until Deneb hits the market. It could be either an affordable AMD performance system or a price dropped i7 platform, and not just the CPU… at least the damn expensive mb’s as well!
And yes… “40% in best case scenarios”!
In games an overclocked E8500 is still the best! Maybe with DirectX11 (which has an improved multi-CPU support) the things will change, so until then I will keep my E8400@4Ghz!
The only thing I really question are the benchmarks. Most of what I have seen peg it at 30-40% (i7-920) better than the Q9450. But are those benchmarks only achieved by the “turbo boost” aka overclock?
Look people, if your a gamer then this platform is the next best thing you must have.. maybe not right now , but eventually this platform will be the requirement for future games.. this platform almost doubles frame rates with existing video cards.. SLI and crossfire configs will benefit from this platform the best.. this CPU and memory set up along with a good x58 board, will beat anything out there right now.. it is able to push the multi GPU set up better than anything has ever before..
i own a Qx9650 @4Ghz, 4 gigs corsair 1066 dominator ram, eVga 780i sli, and a eVga 9800GX2.. if i take my 9800GX2 out of my current set up and throw it in an x58 i7 platform, i can get almost 100% more frames per second in real game play..

“Turbo Boost Technology,” eh? Brings to mind the Turbo button on computers of yore.

LMFAO!!! }8^)
so is this a single, dual, or quad core ?
Intel says this EVERY time it releases a new cpu. Don’t believe the hype! While I clearly admit their CPU’s are excellent, the price vs. performance is great, you cannot expect 40% performance increase across the board. For all we know they may notice a 40% increase in Word, but everything else is a 5-30% increase. well, if you don’t use Word much, who cares?
Lets see the facts from an independent study? I want my Zip’s and Rars and my dvd rips to increase by 40% and I would like the chip to use 20 watts of power? Well, good luck with that too.
I am sure it will be good, but to be honest, you can probably skip this entire gen of CPU’s if you bought the Core Duo/Quad series in the last 2 years. Kind of like the Nividia 8000 series GPu’s. You can easily forget the 9000 series as its only a marginal increase.
Save your $ folks.
Why not just upgrade and spend $900 on a new corei7 920 cpu, mobo, and 6gb ddr3 memory. We all knew Intel Nehalem Bloomfield cpu’s were coming and now we are ready to spend $ to get our pirating done faster. Everyone already has a 1000watt psu right? *Any pc should use these must haves: 3 nvidia gtx 280’s (ATi’s 4870 X2’s are benchmark hype) and 2x 300gb velociraptor hard drives @raid0.
40%? Ya right, 40% at BEST in crazy server situations. Not for normal home usage scenarios. Sure it is quite a bit better, but not nearly 40% for regular people. And a good bit of the performance increase is because it uses high end DDR3 RAM which is a lot faster. A i7 system also costs WAY too much for normal people to use. Just wait a year or so until the prices come down to almost reasonable for these CPUs and the RAM they use.
i’ll keep my 2ghz amd 64, 1g ddr ram, radeon9550, horse&cart, spearwithastonetip for a little while longer… lets me program, watch movies, listen to music and play bf2142… why do i feel like an old man
E8600 E0 stepping is still the best way to go and will be for a while in terms of gaming.
i7 is for noobs who dont know how to overclock properly.
Not just yet, I have my Core 2 Extreme QX9650
I thought the CPU battles were over a long time ago? AMD lost hands down.
is it the ones with halfnium???
250 grams of halfnium please…
one question: im thinking of getting a new pc,my old one just died, should i wait for i7 or just get the core2duo? will the current motherboards be compatible with the i7?
The prices of these CPUs are of the same numbers but in pounds… Credit Crunch doing? Racist Intel I say!
@nub
This new processor will use the new socket 1366 so its incompatible with socket 775 used by Core2Duo. Also the prices for I7 motherboards range from about $400 to $1,070! –LOOOL!
In 2010 maybe I will buy this new CPU along with Windows7!
Until then the current CPU’s are good enough!
