I have used UltraEdit for over 8 years. I have not been able to find an editor that's so powerful as UE. I tried Notepad+ and it's usable but not for full-time text mode dev work.

Also I can edit 4GB+ files easily using this editor, while everything else crashes on windows.

Vim is great, but until it runs natively on windows you really don't need to mention it here...

As for those who are looking for a "notepad replacement," look elsewhere, this tool is way too powerful for you.

The keygen field box is too small. Slap the cursor at the beginning and shift+end to highlight what u can't see. Copy that.

Alt + Left mouse click let you select column.

Alt + C turn on the column editor where you can insert anything in a column of text!

@51 Runcible Man,

I appreciate the suggestion, but I would rather have needles driven under my fingernails than use an editor based on VI. Back when I first got on the net with a borrorwed Unix shell account, I tried to use VI. I couldn't make it do anything. I read the man page and memorized the basic functions then tried it again. I still couldn't make it do anything. I gave up. A few years later, I downloaded a supposedly improved version of VI for the Amiga, after hearing about how it was the world's greatest text editor. Same thing!

@52 RangeRover,

Notepad++ seems to be missing any kind of a sort function, let alone the ability to sort on a specific column. I also can't find any way to cut a rectangular block of text and paste it in elsewhere. The Wikipedia comparison says it includes block cut/paste, but I couldn't figure out how to do it and in true SourceForge spirit, it doesn't come with any kind of help or docs.

And I never said I was a programmer, I'm not. I use text editors for editing text. I need an editor that will sort a selected portion of text on a user-specified column. Allow cutting and pasting rectangular blocks of text. Search & replace that will let you find normally invisible characters such as tabs, end of lines, etc. Record and playback macros, both to the end of the file and through the currently selected text, which will record all of the above.

Textpad current does all this, but doesn't let you assign hotkeys to macros. You can have one keyboard macro, but there's no way to transfer a saved macro to the macro key. For a single use macro, this isn't a problem, but when you need to use a macro 10-20 times in a row, it gets to be a pain to have to keep going up to the menu.

Is SuperEdi considered a joke since it hasnt been mentioned at all? It's the only notepad-replacement I tried, but it does its job and is free.

Amazing how this application has swollen in size over the years. I'll stick with version 8.0a at a more reasonable 0.99M

It ain't so bad. It's just simpler than everything you've ever used before, so it seems complex, but use it for just an hour, and you'll love it. Guaranteed... or your money back!
