    Perhaps it’s time to give this old favorite a try again. I rarely use anything but the text editor in Dreamweaver anyway, might as well get something more light weight.

    I prefer notepad2 myself. You can literally replace notepad with it. It’s also very lightweight and has better save functionality than notepad++. However, it does lack the tabs that notepad++ has.

    I use EditPlus, which runs much faster than all of these huge progz, and it also has the much of these program’s functions too… and thats all I need.
    Anyway I may give it a try, so thanks :)

    I used EmEditor Pro and several editors that basically allow you to code and have syntax highlighting for java, C++, Python, PHP, Ruby, Hex, etc, HTML tidy (EmEditor plugin), also allowing built in links to a DOS prompt to the languages appropriate directory, launches IE & FF, etc, etc.
    But when all is said and done,
    go Notepad++

    It’s free and it’s still better than most of the ‘pay’ ones.
    Why wouldn’t you?

  37. RangeRover
    April 12th, 2008 | 19:30

    Sorry if this seems OT, but here’s an answer for @20 about notepad++
    (about multi-view/replace -might answer your question)

    You have two views at same time. That means you can visualize (edit) 2 different documents at the same time (screenshot). You can visualize (edit) in the 2 views one document at 2 different positions as well. The modification of document in one view will carry out in another view (i.e. you modify the SAME document when you are in clone mode, see screenshot).
    Regular Expression Search/Replace supported

    Syntax Highlighting and Syntax Folding

    Supported languages :
    C C++ Java C# XML HTML
    PHP CSS makefile ASCII art (.nfo) doxygen ini file
    batch file Javascript ASP VB/VBS SQL Objective-C
    RC resource file Pascal Perl Python Lua TeX
    TCL Assembler Ruby Lisp Scheme Properties
    Diff Smalltalk Postscript VHDL Ada Caml
    AutoIt KiXtart Matlab Verilog Haskell InnoSetup
    CMake YAML
    WYSIWYG

    Way too much more, look it up at sourceforge

    This looks interesting, but not at 12MB for an editor! Plus, I don’t want an FTP client, Telnet client, search toolbar, etc in my editor.

    I’ve been searching for the perfect editor for a while now and have come to the conclusion that it doesn’t exit.

    I currently use Textpad, which does everything I want, but doesn’t allow you to set a hotkey for the macros.

    Every other text editor is missing at least one feature I need. Some don’t cut/paste blocks/columns. Some won’t sort on a user-specified column (some don’t even have sort!). Many don’t offer the option to repeat a macro through a selection or to the end of the file.

    It’s like all the authors got together to make sure that no one editor has every feature. (unless it’s a huge, bloated program with all sorts of unneeded junk)

  47. Runcible Man
    April 12th, 2008 | 23:46

    @50

    You clearly haven’t tried vim. It’s the most customizable editor out there. And it’s simpler and faster to use than anything else I’ve ever tried, and I’ve tried a LOT, believe you me. You can make macros as you want, add and edit features as you want. You can do everything that you’ve listed as the features that you’d like. Vim is infinitely powerful. Using plugins, you can make it do anything and everything. Try it, you’ll thank me.

  48. RangeRover
    April 12th, 2008 | 23:47

    @50 What is Notepad ++ missing that you need?

    There’s plugins and you can define your own languages/syntax, etc. It’s pretty customizable if it doesn’t have the feature already there (and definitely not bloatware + free)

    Anyway, since you are such a demanding/discerning programmer, why don’t you just create a plugin to do what you want;
    Here’s a link on how to create your own plugin for Notepad++

    http://notepad-plus.sourceforge.net/uk/plugins-HOWTO.php

  49. Runcible Man
    April 12th, 2008 | 23:50

    @50

    Read the wikipedia entry, it gives a good brief summary of just some of the basic advantages of vim:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vim_%28text_editor%29

    The fact that it’s a modal editor is great. It takes a few hours to get used to it, but after that, you’ll never look back because it’s so intuitive and quick and convenient.

  50. Runcible Man
    April 12th, 2008 | 23:59

    @52

    I’m sorry, but compared to vim, Notepad++ is bloatware. It’s also not as intuitive or nearly as customizable.

    Never mind that it’s only available on Windows, which is not exactly the OS of choice for those who write code for a living. Neither is MacOS, or should I say, that horribly mangled BSD “distro” with it’s buggier-than-hell WM “Aqua” all of which are definitely not open source, in fact, they’re even more the opposite of that than anything M$ can dish up.

  51. Runcible Man
    April 13th, 2008 | 00:04

    Just to eliminate any room for argument, vim beats Notepad++ in every single possible way:

    @51 Runcible Man,

    I appreciate the suggestion, but I would rather have needles driven under my fingernails than use an editor based on VI. Back when I first got on the net with a borrorwed Unix shell account, I tried to use VI. I couldn’t make it do anything. I read the man page and memorized the basic functions then tried it again. I still couldn’t make it do anything. I gave up. A few years later, I downloaded a supposedly improved version of VI for the Amiga, after hearing about how it was the world’s greatest text editor. Same thing!

    @52 RangeRover,

    Notepad++ seems to be missing any kind of a sort function, let alone the ability to sort on a specific column. I also can’t find any way to cut a rectangular block of text and paste it in elsewhere. The Wikipedia comparison says it includes block cut/paste, but I couldn’t figure out how to do it and in true SourceForge spirit, it doesn’t come with any kind of help or docs.

    And I never said I was a programmer, I’m not. I use text editors for editing text. I need an editor that will sort a selected portion of text on a user-specified column. Allow cutting and pasting rectangular blocks of text. Search & replace that will let you find normally invisible characters such as tabs, end of lines, etc. Record and playback macros, both to the end of the file and through the currently selected text, which will record all of the above.

    Textpad current does all this, but doesn’t let you assign hotkeys to macros. You can have one keyboard macro, but there’s no way to transfer a saved macro to the macro key. For a single use macro, this isn’t a problem, but when you need to use a macro 10-20 times in a row, it gets to be a pain to have to keep going up to the menu.

    Alt + Left mouse click let you select column.

    Alt + C turn on the column editor where you can insert anything in a column of text!

    @25 GTR

    The keygen field box is too small. Slap the cursor at the beginning and shift+end to highlight what u can’t see. Copy that.

  67. argh
    April 19th, 2008 | 21:08

    I have used UltraEdit for over 8 years. I have not been able to find an editor that’s so powerful as UE. I tried Notepad+ and it’s usable but not for full-time text mode dev work.

    Also I can edit 4GB+ files easily using this editor, while everything else crashes on windows.

    Vim is great, but until it runs natively on windows you really don’t need to mention it here…

    As for those who are looking for a “notepad replacement,” look elsewhere, this tool is way too powerful for you.
